Hi all, what do you recommend for a controller wiper board lubricant?

 

Difalco recommends a drop of braid juice, which is what I've used for several years, with good results. Patriot braid juice is what my local raceway keeps in stock, so that's the brand I've used. Some of the local racers use lighter fluid, and I've tried that, too. It works, but it doesn't last very long.

 

The reason I'm asking is that I've had some issues with that lubricant on a controller I built a controller with a PNP transistor, using a wiper board from James Cleave. The problem has been that the lubricant seems to pick up the conductive residue from the wiper button/board wear, and deposits it between the dead band, where the wiper rests, and the first throttle band. It doesn't take long, less than the length of a race, for it to build up enough to complete an electrical connection, which turns on the transistor at low power, and with the trigger released, it creates a short in the brake circuit. It's not enough to blow the brake fuse, but it does melt brake pots. I've always used controllers with NPN transistors before, and never had a problem. Maybe that's unique to a PNP design?

 

Because of that, I've been using it dry, with no lubricant, with the wiper adjusted for as little tension as possible. That works, but it seems that would be less than ideal for wear on the wiper button and board. James uses a motor brush for a wiper button, and I plan to try that, but I'm also looking for ideas for a better lubricant.

I have used Tri-Flow for years with no issues. A high quality silicone spray or lube would work well also.

I don't remember where I came across this but nose oil.

 

If anyone paid attention to me racing they could have seen me wipe the side of my nose between heats and wipe the controller wiper board with the same finger. It worked for me.

I put a piece of 2000 grit sandpaper face up and run the wiper button across it to give it a clean up. Then clean everything well and it should work fine dry. You will typically see me using my shirt tail to clean the wiper band between heats. If needed I touch my finger tip to the braid juice and touch the wiper band then squeeze the trigger a few times then wipe it all off. Very smooth. :)

I recommend not using any. I have a Pro 2 controller that's been used for 20 years without ever touching the wiper board.

What's used professionally for contact cleaning and conditioning is DeoxIT by CAIG Laboratories (https://www.amazon.c...oxit/s?k=deoxit). The audiophile world swears by this stuff coating all their audio connections with it. In addition to a cleaner, the stuff also includes something that lubricates. I've never used it on slot car controllers or anything else preferring to keep the contacts dry. Most petroleum-based lubes and those like Tri-flow (contains Teflon in a petroleum base) and silicon spray are insulators, so theoretically they'll degrade electrical performance although I've used them in motors before. I've only one professional experience with DeoxIT. The maintenance department where I worked thought it would be the thing to use on all of our circuit card test adapters with many pogo-pin contacts. Instead of improving the electrical contact, it severely degraded it to the point that we were getting all sorts of test errors/failures that took some sleuthing to figure out. After thoroughly vapor degreasing all of the test adapters to remove all traces of the DeoxIT, the proper electrical operation was restored. This has made me very skeptical of using anything that leaves a residue on electrical contacts.

 

Using some lubricant does aid in getting a silky-smooth controller trigger feel. I've found that if I carefully align the trigger/wiper and board/resistor so that they are on parallel planes to each other, make sure the wiper isn't twisted and lays flat, and wiper contact and board/resistor are burnished with sharp edges removed, the trigger/wiper action will be nicely smooth without using any lube. When the action begins to feel rough or stick, burnish/abrade/sand some more. Abrasive should be 400 or higher being sure to carefully clean away all the abrasive residue. Leftover abrasive residue also makes a rough wiper feel. I've now started using solid brass wiper buttons which have taken more effort to make smooth, but are now the best I've used.

Don't use a lubricant. Period.

 

Get yourself a toothbrush, some alcohol prep pads, a bit of fine sandpaper, and some plain paper.

 

Use the toothbrush dry to remove dirt. Wipe the board with the alcohol pad.

 

Put some sandpaper with the grit facing the wiper button, and run the button back and forth a little. Repeat with paper. Repeat with alcohol pad.  Wipe board one last time with alcohol pad.

 

Let dry.

 

You will get fantastic results.

 

A clean controller is smooth feeling, and works best.

I prefer one drop of hoodoo/voodoo on the board.  Pull the trigger a few times to spread it and then wipe off the extra fluid.  Be sure to clean out the grooves between the contact pads to avoid shorts.

Bearing oil. All my controllers leave with a drop of bearing oil spread in a very thin even layer across the bands. I do not actually recommend braid juice anymore. Lighter fluid does nothing except clean the bands.

 

Of course it really depends on your wiper button material. Mine are soft copper buttons on the gold plated wiper bands. They start out round and then have a small flat contact area sanded smooth during the final adjustments. It is impossible to keep a large flat wiper button surface flat on all the wiper bands. Any little side pressure on the trigger will ruin the alignment and lift the bottom edge of the wiper button up and change the area of the button and it's contact with the wiper bands. It is much better to use a small contact area. If you have a Parma button then just keep the bands clean without any lubricant as the graphite in the Parma button is the lubricant.

 

Jason, if you are having so much trouble with getting a mild short between your wiper bands then the problem is the extremely high ohm resistors that are probably needed on that PNP design. Creating a mild short between bands with high ohm resistors is going to show up much easier than on my controllers which are generally only 5.6 ohms for 1/24 models. What ohm resistors are on each band? A motor brush is a lot softer than a Parma button and will possibly deposit more residue.

 

PNP transistors are more expensive, have fewer types and are harder to find availability so I do not understand the fascination with them by some.

I built my own controller, based on the JG controller where I use veroboard and it has been in use for over 15 years.

The only lubricant I have ever used, is a soft lead pencil wiped over the contact path. 

Graphite powder will do the same thing.

Nose oil/nose wax sounds gross, but, believe it or not, I've also heard of skin oil recommended as a lubricant for the back of a guitar neck, so maybe not a bad thing. LOL.

 

I do try to keep my wiper boards and buttons clean, and as flat as possible to the wiper board. I have also used very fine (1000-1500 grit) sandpaper to polish the face of the wiper button, as the two Mikes suggested. Maybe I need more practice at getting everything perfectly clean, polished, and straight, but a dry wiper board always seems to feel a little rough to me. Maybe I just need to adjust what I perceive as rough? The controller is built out of a Parma Turbo frame. When I initially built it, I used the original Parma wiper button, and I think it felt ok dry, but I changed it after the shorting started. I've tried a couple of different buttons, and have an MB Slot brass button that I've rounded a bit more than the way they come on it now

I was thinking of dry lubricants, since something that leaves the surface wet will obviously attract dirt, and thought of graphite lube, as used for automotive lock cylinders (I'm an automotive tech by day), but Google says that graphite is electrically conductive, which might end up doing the same thing as the residue.

 

I hadn't thought of a penetrating oil, like Tri-Flow, or bearing oil.

Thanks, Jim, you may well be right. I used a PNP Darlington transistor. The wiper board has 24 bands, and I used values in the range that James Cleave recommended, 15 ohm, I believe. My multimeter reads 380 ohms across the entire network. I had similar thoughts about the motor brush, but I know that people do it, and that's what James recommends, so I figured it might be worth a try, for science. Will those values show up a mild short on both a PNP and NPN design, or is a PNP specifically more susceptible?

 

I got several of the wiper boards from James, as a way to build a few controllers on Parma frames. The instructions that he included for the way he builds them were for a PNP circuit, and I decided to try it, again, for science. I know the Brits seem to love PNP transistors, and I do some of the controller repairs for my local raceway, so I figured it might be worth an experiment, to get a little more familiar with the circuit, if nothing else, in the unlikely event that I have to work on one. To be honest, though, I'd agree with you about them. Maybe it's partly because I'm more familiar with an NPN circuit (my first electronic controller was one of yours), but it makes more sense to me, so I doubt I'll be repeating the PNP experiment, and this one may end up getting rewired as an NPN.

Jason, post a close up picture or two of the Cleave PCB as I have never seen one. A PNP should not be more prone to shorting between bands and 15 ohms is not that high of ohms to make them react to dust in between the bands. I am not sure why your issues are this bad with the circuit board.

This is the controller. One thing to note that might be relevant is that the last time I cleaned it, since I've been using it dry, with no lubricant, I noticed that most of the plating on the wiper bands where the wiper rides is worn off, so maybe that's where the residue that was causing the problem has come from. As I said, James uses a motor brush for a wiper button, which would be much softer and very easy on the wiper bands.

 

James designed the board so that the last band on the full-throttle end is the full-throttle relay trigger, and the Parma full-throttle contact functions as it originally did. I initially wired it that way, but ended up wiring the contact as the relay trigger and adding an extra resistor, to make the full-throttle band just another throttle band. That's why the two resistors on the other side of the board are not in the places marked on the board, and there's a 14 gauge white V+ wire connected to a 20 gauge wire, which is then connected to the circuit board. The pad that the wiper button rests on when the trigger is released was originally a redundant brake/anti-brake contact, but after the first time it shorted, I removed that connection, and now it's just a dead band.

 

It's a nice enough board, and it's been interesting to play with the brake and anti-brake settings, especially since my local raceway just got a flat track set up. The one thing I don't like, though, is the surface-mount resistors, since I don't have the equipment to solder them myself, and had to get a friend who is an electrical engineer to do it for me.

What type of wiper button is on the controller now? That looks like lot of wear. Get a rounded Parma button or try the motor brush ASAP.

Jason, one thing I would do is get a tooth brush and some acetone and scrub off all the excess flux on all your solder joints. It does not look very pleasing as is. Remove the handles first because if you use acetone it will ruin them.

 

Also, if you used a flat Parma button for the wiper bands and did not file it flat first then the perimeter of those buttons were raised up and quite sharp possibly causing the excess PCB wear.

 

What does your heatsink assembly look like?

I use comm drops then clean the band with a Q  tip then another couple of drops of comm drops . 
Don't forget to clean the brake contacts as well .

i would use a dremel with radial brittle brush - it cleans without too much adhesive. use the 80 grit in 3/4" diameter & mount 3 of them on a mandrel. it's what i use for building chassis - https://www.mcmaster...494A52-4494A19/

Ok, I'm back. I'm sorry about the late reply. It's been a busy few days over Christmas.

 

I originally started with the stock Parma wiper button that came on the controller in it's original form. I don't remember for sure if I did anything to it when I actually built the controller, but it was the normal rounded face that the Parma buttons that I've seen have. After the first time it shorted and melted the brake pot, I swapped it out for a Slick 7 silver-faced button that I'd rounded off the edges a bit. I know you don't recommend those buttons, Jim, but that's what I had on hand. I ended up swapping that one out for an MB Slot brass button, which I used first with some braid juice for lube, and then dry. I never had it short with the MB Slot button, but it still made some residue, enough to cause enough friction that the trigger didn't release all the way back to the brake contact consistently. I'd also played with the wiper arm tension several times, and I think I had it about as light as I could get it without it lifting off.

 

I ended up with a little time over Christmas, and I got a motor brush wiper button set up. I put a bit of time on it at my local raceway's Christmas party last night, and, at least so far, it seems to work well. I was trying to keep a close eye on how much dust it produced, and I haven't noticed any obvious buildup yet. So I guess I'll see how it does over time.

I did clean the bands, I believe with both rubbing alcohol and lighter fluid, as well as scribe between all of the bands (partly to make sure that I didn't have some solder residue causing the short), several times in the course of the evolution of the problem, so hopefully that's taken care of.

Thanks Jim, I've wondered if there was a good way to remove that residue.

 

 

I certainly won't rule out the possibility that I inadvertently did something that at least started the problem, but I've not had any similar problems with any other controllers that I've built or worked on, so hopefully this is a one-off problem? I've been considering building a second one, but with an NPN transistor this time, which might be instructive. Or I could rewire this one for an NPN.

 

 

I'll attach a picture of the heatsink. It's an early picture, from immediately after I initially built it, so pardon the temporary wire tie I used to hold the relay in place until I was sure everything was working as it should. The transistor is an MJ11015, as recommended by James Cleave, since that's what he designed the circuit around. I know there's not necessarily anything special about the transistor, just a PNP Darlington that has a high enough amperage rating.

Jason, using the soft Slick 7 wiper button is where you went wrong and the full brass one would be even worse as as it it much harder than PCB copper. That is why your first couple bands practically look like they are ground down to the fiberglass surface. 

 

My quote above about using an emery board was about brake contacts not the wiper bands.

 

With the motor brush, which is the same as using the original rounded Parma button, you should be able to increase the wiper arm tension so the button does not lift off in case you have any side pressure on the trigger.

 

Yikes, that transistor is 3 times the cost of a standard TIP35C and only 5 amps more current handling. It does have a decent power rating of 200 watts versus 125 for the TIP35C.

Oops, you're right, I hadn't connected the emery board comment with the previous reference to cleaning the brake contact. I thought an emery board seemed a little extreme for cleaning wiper bands, and I wouldn't have used anything that abrasive, unless nothing else worked. I had cleaned the brake contacts, since, for some reason, they didn't seem to work as well after the short, when they'd been arcing...

 

The first couple of bands on the controller aren't actually worn down more than that the plating is removed. At some point in the evolving experiment, I filled in between them with epoxy, so there's no gap for the residue to collect in.

 

What material are your wiper buttons, Jim? Believe it or not, I've been meaning to check with you to see if you'd sell me a couple of your current wiper arms, to try on a couple of my controllers, but I haven't got around to it yet. I assume they'll work on a Parma trigger? My Difalco controller is the first-generation HD30, with the 2/11 date on the wiper board, and has the older, curved wiper arm.

 

Yes, that transistor is quite a bit more expensive than a TIP35. But, right or wrong, the racers on that side of the pond seem to like their PNP Darlingtons, and there aren't many available from Digikey or Mouser in a plastic package transistor, though you can certainly make one out of discrete components.
