Hording stuff.  There was a guy on the road  out of Saint Germain en Laye (France)  and he  liked Mopar and always had some Challengers parked outside. I stopped in and saw he had a white Plymouth Hemi Cuda convertable for 220K francs. Now this was a lot for me in 1984 so I passed it by and the car is now “known” and wound up in the USA  in some private collection and  “worth” several million. But, this always gets me thinking about the “guys” who have large collections of cars  including  many hemi  Challengers, ‘Cudas,  and not just one but dozens of the same car.

Knowing how few exist I always get mildly “upset” of these horded private collections hidden away  and usually “off the road”

Thats the way it is I guess, some really need to own as many as possible  but do we really  need more than 1 of any given car or anything else that we like?  “Nothing stranger than folk” but for   me, no.

To see “unhorded” stuff, luckily we have museums.   And, with items correctly documented, they are a strong holds of precious creations with stories/histories  allowing anyone to see and understand what we have done.   I believe museums are very important and especially for the  young in school who very often don’t know anything about the past  (and the present for that matter).  I teach in Paris and try to get the students to go to the Musée des Arts et Métiers. This is a sleeper musium in Paris and it is the best... but so few know.  Go there and be humbled.  You think you’are so hot!  Look what was done  150 years ago with poor gas lighting in  dark little rooms  and by hand.

I collect some stuff,  old prototype racing bikes, some cars and a few slot cars. Only one of each and  thats just fine.  Recently I saw someone post  on one of the slot forums what looked like  a years production of rare Cox slot cars (exaggeration) but a lot. I said to myself, now I know why I can never find “that” particular car since this person and surely others have “horded” them away. Now I don’t want to piss off the ones who do this , its their own deal but my first reaction is wow, that’s  really cool later followed by my thinking “what a jerk”.   So I guess I don’t like hording…coud be jealously too but  not really.

Anyway, finally getting to the end.  When I was at Art Center College in Pasadena in the late ’70’s, we were doing some fullsize car projects (drawings) and suddenly there appeared a very tall guy and a fine wife.  This was Dan Gurney who had come to visit the school and the auto design department. My memory was of a very nice guy, interested  and asking questions about what we were doing.   Many in the Auto business were/are  pretentious S.O.B.s  (Lee Iacocca comes to mind when he visited us at Chrysler advanced design studio in CA, with his model wife and he was the complete opposite of Dan Gurney)  But, Gurney seemed just a normal nice guy and we all said “cool”

I always liked his stuff, was a fan  and even once  got a AAR ’Cuda into the Citroen design studio  but thats another story..

So here I have talked about hording, museums, and Dan Gurney and that leads up to my real sneaky “sort of” motive!  Can someone find me a Cox Dan Gurney Ford?  Anything original  but nice and who cares about the box?  Maybe some one has 10 of them stashed away and could live with 9?  I promis it will be the only one, no hording and not hidden away. I always bring in slot car models to the schools where I teach (often the Cox Cheetah)  so students can draw and learn perspective/proportions and of course the history behind each model!   When I die, I'll give the Galaxy  slot car  to the   Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris!!, I. promis!

The end.

I met Dan Gurney once and your experience is exactly the same as mine: classy, modest, thoughtful, and smart.

I think hoarding is a bit of a harsh word. I had real hoarders living next to me and they weren't collecting anything, just everything. When the house was foreclosed it took a crew of 4 men with a Bobcat 3 days to clean out the yard and the house was totaled as it was filled up too (it was replaced with a McMansion). This wasn't some house with acreage, it is a property on a 50 x 120 foot lot. The stories I could tell about them.

I believe the people who over-collect are what you were describing. They are the ones that have to have every color combination, every interior trim, every power train combination. Fine if you can afford it and the room to do it. Whether their style of collecting is greedy or not is relative.

Good luck in finding a Cox Gurney Ford. They're out there and it is one of the most desirable of Cox slot cars. Keep and eye on (of course) Ebay but also keep an eye on Craigslist (really!), garage sales, estate sales and inquire at hobby shops about collectors. The Boomers are dying off and many widows or families don't know or care of the value of such things. YouTube is full of these types of finds.

Must admit I wonder about guys like the "hoarders, but I really don't care if they do that.

I don't usually care about colors or color variations, but have tried to get a few different GRC Spitfires, supposedly available in 8 colors as rental cars.

GRC Spitfire-2.JPG

And I've gotten multiples of a few other cars, but am not really sure why...

K&B Coopers box-2.JPG

There's generally enough of even the rare cars to go around, at least most of those that everybody wants. And there are other rare cars that nobody even cares about...

Precision Pacer Lotus 30-1.JPG

So, in the end, not worth getting riled about hoarders. Tend to your own garden and... (hmm, what's the cliché here?).

Sure, horder is perhaps a "big" word and in the end I really don't care about these people...just complaining a little thats all. I know with patience stuff come along...just my mood of the day. Anyway,   funny, I just bought a GRC Spitfire. Yellow with mask..  Dan

Hi Dan,

I have a Dan Gurney story and I also have a Cox Gurney Ford I would consider selling.

Over 20 years ago (Probably late 90s) I went to a vintage event at Sears Point, Dan Gurney was there and I had brought my Cox Gurney Ford for him to sign if that became an option.

At the time I did not know what color red to paint the roof of the Cox Gurney Ford so I though I would ask Dan himself.

I get in line with many other fans and when I get to meet Dan face to face I ask the question.

Now to give context, we are in the pits, there are race car motors being started many more fans to meet behind me.

I pull out the Cox Gurney Ford and I ask the question. "Dan what color red would the roof had been painted on the car you raced at Riverside in 1966?"

You see I had seen many Cox Gurney Ford slot cars with there roofs painted a straight up red, NOT metallic red, but I had my suspicions it was a metallic and wanted to paint it correct to the actual race car that Cox modeled.

Back to Dan, he took the model in his hands then thought about the question. It was a moment. He tuned out the world around us for some time.

Then came back to the moment with his answer " The year before,1965, my race car was painted (top to bottom) Ford metallic red, so the following year they masked off the roof and painted the same car white, so the roof remained metallic red"

I replied,"that's what I thought, thank you Dan for confirming that".

It made me think that Dan' ability to tune the world out , had much to do with being a great race car driver.

As we were talking I ask if he would sign the bottom of the interior. He did and I move on knowing I had just meet one of my hero's.

That's a memory I will always treasure.

RIP Dan.

Hi Martin,  a great  story.! .   A few years ago I asked "my" students if they could tell me about their  heros.    Blank looks,  nobody had any.    I  would be interested in a car  for sale!

Thanks, Dan

I wouldn't say that I horde stuff. I look at it as " it's so I have something to do when I retire. As fate would have it, now that I'm almost retired,I had a fire at my house, my shop filled with 30,000+ gallons of water. I haven't even begun to assess how much was stolen.
So, as far as hording, I've come to the following conclusion(s)
1) unless you have a storage unit that is free and impervious to every thing it's not worth it.
2)if you keep the money in the bank, when you're ready, you can afford it.
3) there's a 50//50 chance that it will be missing or,unusable when you're ready to use it
Worst case scenario is that when you're finally ready, you'll lack the physical ability and enough money to make it happen

While I don’t hoard many things I wonder who if any of my family will want any of it. So the question is do I let them worry about it or start making my stuff “available to the world” by selling it off. Am I ready to part with my first slot car or RC car? Some of my “stuff” is not so special and can be sold off but other things need to stay to keep one toe in the past while I try to create new favorite goodies.
As far as keeping things for retirement some projects need to be finished now while I still can.

I keep everything. The family can decide what to do with the stuff once I'am gone. No worries here at all.....

I was with a friend that has been my friend for over 50 years. He made the statement that:when you die,all of this will go in the trash. 🤔 So I've made arrangements to donate all of it to the museum. Not that any of it is museum worthy but, better to let them figure out what to do with it.

There comes a point when "collecting" can become a fetish and cease to be fun. It comes in all shapes and sizes and there is no set personality type who indulge in it, but in my experience, there are two general types. The first (and to my eyes the most honest), is the perpetual seeker. This person will spend endless time to find that one particular WHATEVER, that will be the cherry on top to his collection, and of that crew that I have met, they are extremely well informed on the things that they seek, and to them, the journey is most of the fun. Then you have the guys with a lot of money. It is the acquisition that matters to them and damn the cost.  They are pretty boring to be around because they can just buy their way to completion. I saw a lot of both kinds when I was involved in music. I really did know a few guys who had huge guitar collections and four or five '58 to '60 Les Paul Sunburst guitars under the bed, and were pretty lousy guitar players. And I knew a couple of guys who only had a couple of instruments but were always trying to just trade up to a better playing guitar. They were always happy to let you play their rides, and were a lot more fun to be around.

Haven't gotten past "it's in the picture in the catalog " syndrome. Especially if it's a 70's auto world or Champion catalog.

Same thing goes on with M1 Garand rifle collectors. The Civilian Marksmanship Program was created to give every US citizen who is legally allowed, a chance to own a military surplus Garand. To keep it fair they have a limit of 8 per customer per year. So a guy buys his 8, and his wife buys 8, and Grandma get some, etc. Then the guy picks the cream of the crop to squirrel away and the rest end up on Gunbroker a month later for triple the money they paid from the CMP.

What museum(s)? Slot car specific or model kits or even baby boomer stuff in general?

Hey Vay, as you probably know the Cox Cheetah only came in one color.

Black for the 1/32scale  and red for the 1/24scale car.

If you are looking for colors, maybe you are thinking of the 1/24 scale Cheetaracha? that did come in various colors.

Yes, it's those six different coloured Cheetaracha bodies sold on a card that added to my overall general confusion.

I believe in only keeping one of each slot car that I like . I have all the colors that Cox made in the cheetaracha , blue , red , green , gold , and black . The display case has the lime green cheetaracha and the mag chassis red cheetah . I also have the 1/32 mag chassis black cheetah . All are restored to mint condition. All have been run on a track . I do not like mint unbuilt slot cars in the box . I want to be able to run them when I get the chance . Collecting has all kind of variations. Each person is different .

There is a difference between collecting & hoarding. I have never been one of either. My main interest in slot cars was always the racing.

Really nice collection and love the display Don, did you make the shelving the your collection sits on?

I made something similar, but it folds for transport.
