And you think its hard to set all of your clocks forward...

California voters decided to do away with this foolishness years ago. The powers-that-be don't seem to have it as a priority to make it official. In the meantime we do The Time Warp dance twice a year. "The void is calling!"

State of Arizona never has observed Daylight Savings Time. The Navajo Nation, which comprises a significant portion of the northeastern corner of the state, does observe it. If that's not confusing enough, the Hopi Nation, which is within and completely surrounded by the Navajo Nation, joins Arizona in not observing.

I had an uncle who was part owner of an antique clock shop with over 1500 clocks and watches. He changed every one twice a year.

The Navajos observe it because right across the border in Utah the Navajos observe it. So, it keeps the Nation together on the same time. Arizona & Hawaii are the only two states that don't currently observe it.

I got caught by that many years ago when I was in Chinle AZ. I assumed the Navajo also didn't change their clocks. Went to a McDonald's for breakfast and much to my surprise I missed it by an hour. ![]()

So does this mean the Tonight show comes on at 10:30 in California instead of 11:30 this time of year.
China is 5 time zones wide but they only use Bejing time for the entire country. Talk about extreme.

When railroads began expanding across vast areas, they quickly realized the problems managing a logistical schedule over multiple time zones created. Their answer was "Railroad Time". Each road had a standardized clock/time system used over the entire road based usually on the time zone over their main system hub/headquarters. If the system was based in the Central Time Zone, the entire road operated on Central Time regardless of whether the local operations were in a different zone, like Mountain or Pacific.
For eons, TV network shows have been time delayed in California to appear at the same time as they were shown in the east. TV stations in the Central Time Zone got permission to broadcast the network shows simultaneously with the Eastern Time Zone, so network TV programming came on an hour earlier by clock time than in the east. Arizona petitioned to broadcast network TV on the Central Time schedule, so to this day network programming is an hour earlier. The nightly news is at 10 PM, not 11, and "The Tonight Show" airs at 10:30 PM. Arizona's reasoning for using an earlier time schedule in the warmer part of the year is based on how hot it is here. Outdoor professions began work at sunrise and end their day in early afternoon, sometimes even earlier than that. We had a new roof put on our house last June, and the roofing workers were off the roof by 11 AM. Having the day end at an earlier hour makes sense.
Another convenience of this Arizona time practice is that from March to November, Arizona is on the same clock time as our Pacific Coast neighbors, most importantly California and Nevada. It does create inconvenience traveling east, though. When we travel IH-10 east via West Texas, we lose 2 hours in the first travel day, one at the New Mexico state line, and a second in West Texas between El Paso and the junction with IH-20 - Aargh!

West Coast TV comes on 3 hours later, relative to eastern time, so it would be 11:30 here....always.
