This year's Oscar for Best Picture was awarded to Paul Thomas Anderson for "One Battle After Another", but the award for Best Racing goes to Pelican Park Speedway for "One FIERCE Battle After Another"! This week was the "Gran Sport" category which, amongst GTO, Can Am, and Dirt Devil, is one of the four fastest categories, and the Tenth category of the Thirteen on rotation. I'm willing to bet there is not another Slotcar Racing Club in the country, or even the world for that matter, that races THIRTEEN (!) categories! Just one of the amazing features of racing at PPS! This is also the class, where speed merchant, local hero, and all around great guy Gary Klein broke through, for the first time in more than 30 years, the 4 second single lap barrier, with a 3.99 second lap, backed up by a 3.97, in his Ford GT40. A landmark achievement at PPS. This is not likely to ever happen again as since then we have lowered the track voltage in an effort to preserve motors. Wednesday night's race brought 11 racers, including the Speed Demon Duo, James and Rich (Electron Raceway) of Roseburg. One would have to agree, the dominant car, and ever popular racecar, is the 1970 era Porsche 917, with no fewer than five on the grid. Kevin brought a newly finished, fast and beautifully detailed 917, and Rich's was a Gulf Oil liveried replica that was fast and great looking, as were all the others. The other popular car in this category is the Ford GT40, Marks I, II, and IV; These can be somewhat confusing and I apologize ahead of time for misidentifying of anyone's car! There was a lone Ferrari, Gary K's 330P3, and another outlier, Greg P's 68 Corvette Roadster, a Clubman's car, which are allowed to run in this category. After the heat race dust settled, and due to their being eleven racers, which elevates the stakes from points to "win to get in", the fast eight qualifiers were Basil, Cully, Kevin, Gary K., Gary T., Greg, James, and Rich.The Hooligan qualifiers were Tom, Chris, and Paul. As the Semi-main's were sorted out, Cully, Gary T., Basil, and James transferred to the Main, all Porsche 917's except Basil's Ford GT40 The Consolation race saw Kevin in his 917 run away for the win, with Rich prevailing in a fantastic battle with Greg for 2nd, and Gary K. 4th; who then went on to transfer to the Hooligan to fill out the field, which he won from Paul, Tom, and Chris. The Main event was yet another shootout, with Cully winning over Gary T., Basil in 3rd, and James out there in the sometimes disadvantaged RED lane, 4th. Due to the masterful efficiency of the ODOT crew, and a good amount of pre race track repairs, the racing activities finished up shortly after 10! Which may be a record for 11 racers! This enabled the Dynamic Duo from Roseburg to probably get back to the homefront before midnight. Next week we go at it again, with the Super Stock class (1960-70), NASCAR stockers; looking forward to seeing you all then. Paul R. Lanz
