I was going to help out here too Bill.
My preferred method is divide a metric number by 25.4
e.g. 64 divided by 25.4 = 2.519mm basically 2 1/2"
If you prefer you can multiply by .03937" Like Bill suggested. e.g. .03937 x 64 = 2.519"

1.00 inch = 25.4 mm is the exact conversion. .3937 in = 1 mm is a close approximation.
In the range we are working it isn't a problem, but when I was working with measurements of a millionth of an inch it became an issue.

You can go the decimal route.
1/32 1÷32=.03125
1/25 1÷25=.040
1/24 1÷24=.04166
Example 96"x.3125 = 3"
Which is a 1/32" wheelbase of 3" is for a 96" wheelbase car.
I also use it to figure the scale length of the slot car wood tracks that I build
Example 5280 feet in a mile x .04166 decimal for 1/24 = 219.99 feet is a scale 1/24 mile rounded up 220 feet.

Mark, where are you going to be running 1/32 cars? Speedy's Fast Lane? At home? At a local club in your area?
I use .039 to convert mm. to inches because 95% of the slot car arms used since I've been racing are ,078" dia. (2mm), plus K&S sells .039" piano wire (1 mm.). All methods work as long as you have a calculator or your phone does.

Martin, when you buy plywood, they call its thickness Imperial, but most of it is various metric. That can often present jointing problems unless you wait to cut your joints until after you get the plywood home.

K&S sells brass and wire in metric as well as inch sizes. For example, I have 1.5 mm piano wire for chassis building that's .059". That provides an additional option between standard .055 and .062 wire.
Bicycles are another of my hobbies, and I got quite adept at metric conversions working with them. Now we watch a good bit of foreign TV, mostly UK, and my knowledge of the various conversions comes in handy when they're talking meters, kilos, and centigrade.
Some time ago, I bought what turned out to be the final version of the slot track design software "Tracker 2000". The extensive sectional track database was somewhat useful, but an even more useful feature for me is the ability to create custom track sections. I've used this to create plans for routed wood tracks including my current home track. While Tracker has a metric and feet/inch measure select, this doesn't apply to the track section designer. All the dimensions for the custom sections have to be in cm.
When you're buying that sheet of plywood, the fractional inch thickness displayed is usually an approximation of the actual metric thickness.
