I got 'er done and made the following demonstration video of the result.
For the last few months, Marcus, the owner of P-1 Raceway, has been using the second prototype I built, and it's still working with no issues.
It isn't as refined as the unit in the video, but at the root level, they work the same – the stepper motor turns, letting out string, when the amperage is below the set point.
