Formula 1 on the King – 6/9/26
This week’s edition of the MVH Tuesday Night Retro series had F-1 running on the Gerding King. Eight drivers headed to tech with racing in the 4-on/4-off format, running the outside four lanes and then moving to the inside four, all over 16 heats.
Eight F-1 Cars in Tech:
Early on, Ray Lee, Bob Hazelwood (aka Woody), Dave Panich, and John Mills were turning quick laps though John was having some difficulty staying in the slot. By the move to the inside lanes, Ray and Dave were tied for first with 160 laps each while Woody was two laps behind. John was eight laps off the podium with 150 laps on the counter and in a tight race with fifth place driver Peter Lentros at 147. Richard Payne was in sixth at 143 while Steven Sacchetti and George Samuel closed out the field, one lap apart at 133 and 132 respectively.
There was no lack of excitement as multiple cars encountered off-track excursions, broken lead wires, braid failure, de-meshing of gears and bent axles. Despite the chaos, all eight cars were still running when time ran out.
The top three positions from the first half of the race got sorted out on the inside lanes with Dave turning up the wick to take the win by just over three laps. Woody and Ray ended up less than a lap apart with Woody slipping into second place as Ray had to settle for third. John turned fastest lap of the night with a 4.193 on blue on his way to a fourth-place finish while Peter edged Richard for fifth by a lap. The race at the rear of the field went Steven’s way as he finished less than a lap ahead of George.
