Can-Am on the Aristocrat – 6/16/26
For the first time this year the MVH Tuesday Night Retro series ran Can-Am on American Aristocrat. The field was comprised of eight starters who ran in the 4-on/4-off format, driving the outside lanes first, then the inside lanes, all over sixteen heats.
Eight Can-Am Cars in Tech:
Once again John Weaver was back to show us all how it is done. By the move to the inside lanes, he had racked up 151 laps, set the fastest lap on each of the outside lanes, and held an eight-lap lead over Dave Panich. The closest racing of the night was for the bottom podium step with Bob “Woody” Hazelwood’s mid-race lap total of 139 giving him a one lap lead over Rob Hayes. In sixth place, Richard Payne held a five-lap lead over Peter Lentros, 132 to 127 while Steve Sacchetti trailed by three. Noah Ball didn’t make it to the move to the inside as he pulled his car after three heats with 104 laps showing.
The second half of the race had Weaver continuing to lead while Woody and Rob duked it out for third place. Early in the second half, Woody’s car slowed as it appeared the magnets in his motor were disintegrating (lots of little magnet fragments clinging to the can), adding more drama to the race for third. However, after half a heat or so, it took off again. In fact, in his final heat, Woody usurped Weaver’s fast time on blue, the only lane where Weaver didn’t dominate. Additionally, Woody was able to hold off Rob by thirteen track sections for a podium finish.
The remainder of the field finished in the same relative order as the first half, with Richard leading the best of the rest. Though finishing seventh, Steven posted the fifth fastest lap of the night.
