Hi everyone,

 

My brother, Jon Laster, died in 2009 and I treasure the wonderful comments about him on this blog. I've just gone through some boxes from my mother's attic (Mom died two weeks ago, days before her 96th birthday), and have all of Jon's trophies and cups. Any suggestions of where these could be donated? I've taken pictures of all of them to keep in a remembrance book about him but I'm afraid I simply don't have the space to keep them all.

I first met Jon in the early '70s when he came from Ohio to race wing cars several times at C&C in Connecticut. He was a long-haired young man who wore T-shirts and bib overalls. Jon was a down-to-earth guy who enjoyed talking with others. I last met him at the '97 USRA Nats held in Manchester, NH. We had several conversations during that week. He still enjoyed talking to people, but the long hair and overalls were long gone. I don't remember if he had moved to Maine by then, or if the move came later.

Mach 1 Raceway in Appomattox, VA, has become the home of Camen in recent years as Joel Montague and Bob Cotton both live nearby. Owner BJ Carter has acquired as many of the old Camen body molds as were available along with Bob Cotten's vacuum-forming machine and reintroduced some of the bodies. At least a couple of the body molds currently being used were crafted by Jon in the '90s. Joel turns up regularly there at major events. I'm sure they would also give these items a home.

 

I met Jon in the early '90s after he, Joel, and Camen moved to Lynchburg, VA. Joel and Jon sometimes participated in Mid-Atlantic USRA events with which I was involved, and I hold these gentlemen in highest regard. Jon was a real class act, and I was very sorry for his passing.

I suppose that the LASCM museum would be interested, of course, but Bill Seitz' suggestion is possibly a better solution?

I'd second Bill's suggestion of checking with Mach 1. Mach 1 is my home raceway, and I know some of the local racers have good memories of racing with Jon.
