Hot Wheels has really upped their game.

Especially with the Premium cars.

I got to sit in one in about 1978.

It was a friend of a coworker.

We were stocking the shelves at the wholesale distributor we both worked for,

and John said, "My friend has one of these".

He wasn't a car guy so I told him was mistaken, and added that they weren't imported into the U.S.

He arranged a visit and lo and behold, the guy had a Fly Yellow Stratos.

The owner said he paid $25K, purchasing it from a German doctor.

He said it cost him another $10K to have it federalized.

The 5 mph bumpers were 1 1/2"(?) square steel tubing, the width of the car, mounted

on 2 Fiat 131 shocks.

One sort of interesting feature was you sat so far inboard, there was room

for a triangular tray, between you and the door panel.

At the rear/wide end of the tray, it was big enough for the driver's helmet.

The front/narrow end was for driver's gloves.

This was my wallpaper for many years:

Stratos 2.jpg

IIRC, I scanned this from a Road & Track article on the car.
