Mossetti 4002 brushless chassis question

My first 4002 came with one of these gizmos, anybody know what it's for?

The second 4002 came without it.

 

I'm guessing it's to reinforce the non-gear side of the motor but it doesn't fit a Parma motor at all.

It should fit a motor bearing to support the bell end. The centrifugal forces from crashing and turning corners can overload the pinion end bearings.
