Cool! I have only the top variant of the Monogram Ferrari 330 P/LM but since it's such a great car I'll keep an eye out for the bottom variant as well.

yes. the Ferrari 330P/LM (correctly named and registered by NART at the '65 Le Mans due to the use of a 330P/2 engine) came in two different boxes like the Ford GT40. Variations also in regard of the motors used: red "X150", then silver, then with red endbell, then Mabuchi FT16D with nickel plated can (oval hole) and ball bearing.

 

 

Interesting that the Monogram logo was changed from the first box to the next! This indicates that the first box was released fairly early in 1966.

 

The extended serial number with suggested retail price of the top kit is SR3211.700. But try as I may I've been unable to find a picture of the serial number bearing side panel of the bottom box. Does that also have the same serial number with the same suggested retail price?

I wonder if my desire to acquire all the major variants (different box with somewhat different parts or even just a different tray) of these Monogram slot car kits is indicative of an unhealthy compulsion? If it is, so what?

 

1. Being a compulsive slot car collecting addict is better than all those other addictions with which most people are afflicted.

 

2. And rather than spending the money on counselling for my collecting addiction, I'd rather just spend the money on more slot car kits. At least then I'm left with something for my money that provides me with delight and satisfaction every single day!

And judging by the prices vintage kits fetch these days, interest in slot cars is far from dying. The "only" problem is the economics of running a slot car track these days.

It was this ad in Boy's Life magazine in 1964 that was seminal in sparking my lifelong interest in slot cars: 

 

 

 

The '36 Ford Coupe and the '40 Ford Pickup remain at the very top of my Want list together with a 1/32 scale Monogram Ford GT. But hey, I've got the rest of my life to keep looking!

 

 

The other kits still right up there on my Want List are a Ferrari 330 P/LM in this box:

 

 

And one or both of the 1/32 scale Monogram Lotus 33 Grand Prix or Ferrari Grand Prix kits plus at least one of the Cox Cheetah kits!

Hmmmmm. Figures #213 and #221 from your wonderful Slot Car Dreams book show the silver motor included with the yellow tray variant of the Cooper-Ford and Ford GT. 

 

But those look to be the same red motor in the two examples of the Ferrari 330 P/LM you posted above. Are there any differences in the parts included between the two different trays then?

I'm looking at these two kits that Phil posted 23 April 2023 on page four of this thread:

 

 

 

 

Both the above kits appear to have the same red motor while a silver motor is within the yellow tray in the other examples I've seen .
