These two look pretty good now. They must have kept you up all night. Now don't wet sand unless you have plenty of paint on them. I'd also spray some test parts with the same paint so you can test the compatibility of the clear you're going to use over it. You don't want to be stripping these bodies again.

Thanks guys. Well, I hit the rewind button to see if I could figure out WTF I did. Being impatient, I accelerated the drying process by placing it in front of a unit heater. Tape and all. I repeated the process (see photo) and, the paint STUKED! Nevermind the scraggly edges.

Now that the paint is stuck, just a few little touch ups and, I can screw up the clear. Only kidding. I'm pretty comfortable with enamel now, I think 🤔.

This turned out to be a good victim. Ummmm, test subject. Why? Because it's also made by Aurora in the same time period.
I figured out that
1) it's amazing how much you can thin/reduce the enamel.
2) the pressure is more important than you think .
3) hardener is a must.
By using the hardner,in small quantities, reducer/thinner in large quantities, you can use -10psi.
I took some rubbing compound to the Ferrari and (before)reshot it. This is the final form, almost. Not a 10'er but, I'm ok with it.
Now for the (hopefully) clear coat and assembly of the vair from hell.

Put your next body project in its own thread. We'll never find it if you continue to use this one.  :laugh2:

You must have read what's left of my mind. I just scrolled through a bazillion posts.
I'll do a condensed version. I'm almost done. A few things I had planned on adding, are not going to happen due to the amount of time I spent on fubar'ing the paint. But, I learned a hell of a lot and,as bad as they are, there the best I've ever done. Go ahead and lyfao, then try it for yourselfs.

It might not be the greatest thing ever to be posted on Slot Blog but, it's the best (enamel) paint job I've ever done. Considering that the paint was a second thought and, the top transplant was in initially the subject of the thread, it's surprising that it took second stage to the paint.
😂😆🤔

Now, the final assembly.🤞

You make body paint stands like I made when I built models. We always had coat hangers around & I've never needed those fancy stands shown in most of the paint videos. The body looks nice. Having put so much time into the body, I'd next build a chassis for it & make it a slot car, but do as you wish. Remember that purple roof originally came off someone's slot car. Also, recall to keep this one off the walls.  :laugh2:  :laugh2:

Thanks guys, yes Billnh, the chassis and motor are next.
I was telling Martin the other day that:
" The only way I can justify it is, if it costs me $40 for everything and, I've got 40 hours in it. It cost me a $1 a hour to have fun. Try THAT at the Chicken Ranch!

That bent coat hanger trick came from Model Car Science way back in one of it's earliest issues. It worked then, and I still use it today. Sixty years later. Tried all sorts of gizmos for holding bodies during painting, but nothing works as well. Even in a spray booth. I clamp the hook end of the coat hanger in an old drill vise, (a small one), and just swivel it with my free hand. I can tilt the model any way I want just by bending the hanger.

I first built model cars in 1958 & that was my main hobby until commercial slot racing came to Maine in '67. I did get an AMT Turnpike set in '63. Many of my AMT models screwed right onto the Turnpike chassis, so I always had a variety of bodies. Someday I'll make a new body holder for painting using a wooden base & spring-loaded legs of coat hanger wire.

Although I had been using coat hangers for a while, in 1963 I saw a picture in some car magazine, of Dean Jeffries using one to paint a model of his open wheeled Mantaray. I figured if it was good enough for him, it was fine by me.

This is worth a look. Love the Corvair connection. Thanks Bill.

Mark, hope you do not mind the distraction to your build? Let me know. I can erase these.

Great videos. And good to see it will finally see the light of day. Also great to see Gene Winfield. I have his autograph on a World Of Wheels program guide. I was probably between 10 and 12 years old when I got it. What a fabulous time.

Mark; Maybe another Corvair project?

Billnh, everyone knows aluminum foil is for your head.
I've got all the bits and pieces on..... now if I can only find the chassis.
Difficulty loading pictures right now, but stay tuned, there's more to come...🙄
Martin, it's not a distraction at all. In fact, I'm going to need a space ship soon.

Progress. The little border strips were a $#@&. But, you can paint over the sharpie lines without it smearing.
Now if I can only find the chassis.

I asked before but, I'll try again. Is there anything that goes in where the purple circle is? It's hard to believe that only one (1) screw{pink}is holding it on.
