Looks great Pablo! Not much "give" with those rear tires...with such thin rubber on there getting the balance between slip and grip seems like it might be difficult. In any case, I bet it's a blast to drive and is easy on the eyeballs too :)

Pablo, that came out looking real nice! Now if it goes as well as it looks, you'll be all set. When the guys at the raceway see it, you'll probably have the opportunity to build a fleet. Tom Andersen will have the bodies unless you have more of the Dubros. :)

I don't know if it was fate or luck or what, but I'm really glad I rediscovered slot cars when I did. I've developed an appreciation for the slot cars that predate my original exposure to slot cars and for the slot cars that were raced before I got into organized racing. It's just so cool to see cars like Pablo's, Rick's and Jairus' come to life. And Steube's jail door dream is taking retro racing to a place that I hope thrives for years to come. GOD, it's great to be alive and feel like a kid again! Thanks to you all!

Boy that's a beautiful interior!! Ought to cut lap times at least 4 tenths! :)

Actually at our local track the typical interior for a Gran Prix car would have been a Cox head glued on the front of the motor. Then us kids started gluing short lengths of cloth around the googles so it looked like a shop towel was stuck to the driver! :laugh2:

Then one day a slow racer showed up with a beautiful interior in a Can-Am that he had formed to fit around the motor. He just used a ruler for a brake but had "bent up" a really nice interior to fit around the motor.

The custom "bent" interiors suited best in the GT or stock cars. We bent boxes for the driver to "sit down in" so his head wasn't hitting the roof. Surprising what you can do in an hour with a ruler, sissors, and glue with a peice of sandpaper.

Okay Don, I'm a file card guy, tell me about the advantages of using painted 220 or 320 grit instead. I must have overlooked your first posting of this that Pablo got. :)

Hi Bill!

The sandpaper when left unpainted will catch the light and mildly "glitter" at times. That really looks good when the effect is softened under the body's glass.

The sandpaper has a crinkled appearance on an open cockpit car after it has been painted.

We also used tape on the bottom of the interiors to stiffen and protect the sandpaper.

Also, about 10 years later, we used file car to make HO scale bodies for the Magna-Traction cars.

Risking a Will-ism here, but--I've been saying the same to myself these past weeks. I left the sport in the summer of '66 and returned just as Jailhouse is taking off, how's that for timing? I'm loving this.

Track test results:

-Handling: havlicek was 100% correct, the rear wheels are too hard due to the large rims. Straightaway speed is, ah, scary :laugh2: (Especially on a bumpy, old track.)
-Motor ran fine, and cool. Acceleration and top speed were spooky, given the poor handling.
-Drift through the corners seemed very nice.
-Overall, I think with some smaller hub wheels and soft rubber, maybe a chunk of lead slightly ahead of amidships, it will work.

No, they do not still sell them, Paul.
You can find them occasionally on ebay. Matter of fact, there are some up for auction as I speak.....

For measurements, I guess you could just ask me ?

Paul,
The picture on post #100 looks awesome. Nice job. :yu:
Someone had a suggestion:
"It may be difficult to find period korrect hypoids, but they were used at the time, so why not do it again?"

I have an F-1 chassis with hypoid gears. The brass on the gears would look cool with your chassis. Also when hypoid gears are set up properly , they are as smooth as silk and last forever.

My goal in the beginning was to create a car that would fit the skinny Du - Bro 98 cent Ferrari 312, using parts from the 60's. The only deviation from that was souping up the 13uo motor with Falcon arm/endbell/magnets. Nothing fancy here, no floating body mounts or drop arm. Just a simple car, and I had fun building it. biggrin.gif

I added some weight to the forward brass pan, changed to smaller rear hubs (Mila Miglia vintage threaded 5 hole), and softer rear tires. Track testing was a complete success. The little F1 scooted around the King in under 6 seconds, and handled very well. The car was smooth and consistent. The power curve was right for the car. Into the vintage wooden box it goes. Thanks to all who inspired and helped, especially PdL for the 13uo mod advice hehehe :i-m_so_happy:

Pablo, I'd refrigerate those rear tires so they'd be fresh next time I decided to take the car out for a few laps. :)

Castor Oil works good for me at keeping tires in good shape. I have some cars that I only run every month or two here at home and the castor oil usually keeps the tires pretty "grippy". And most of the tires are 40 plus years old. :)
