PS- Talking of wire front ends, I just remembered this thing I did several years ago in 1/32 ;

Independant FRONT suspension

The front wheels were supposed to 'trail steer', but I got the geometry a bit wrong. Worked fine on my home track, but tended to go into full lock at the first turn and stay there for the rest of the lap on the club track. Went into the pits for a rebuild and stayed there.... It may revive some unpleasant memories for Prof. Fate. Probably not something he would want to see again.
The suspension is a sort of torsion bar sliding pillar, but that would be to dignify a puppy's breakfast with technical bull...

Did you think about tieing the front steering into the guide, like a reverse steering column?
Have a rod come off the back side of the guide shaft, to the center link.

Jarius:

Dumb question - Why not use wheels with a 3/32" bore or sleeve the wheel and cross drill for a set screw and, for the front suspension, sleeve the wheel to 1/16", use a fixed 1/16" axle with independently rotating front wheels and paint the center portion of the axle with invisible (i.e. flat black) paint. Example (of, among other things, yet-to-be cleaned up soldering!)

Joe,

the axles (half shafts) on my off road buggy and on a Pike's Peak Hill Climb car that I work on both use Porsche 930 CV joints. These axles measure .845" The hill climb car dynos at 730 hp!

On a non independent straight axle, like on a RWD American car, yes the axle housing is at least 3".

The actual axle in the housing is much smaller.

Bob C.

Bob,

I agree with you 100%. This car would most likely would have had an exposed axle shaft. I guess if you turned it down to 1/16 or so that would be a 1 1/2" which would be closer to the prototype. You would need to replicate the CV boots too unless it had exposed U-joints. I guess the point I was initially trying to make that 1/8" would not be extremely far from the actual prototype size. It's not like it would be 8 or 10 inches. Joe

Thanks Mr T. :)

Brian, the wrench is indeed hand made. This is the second such piece. The first went with "Von Thingie" and was rubber coated on the tool end to protect the aluminum wings. Still need to do that to this one....

Finished up the front wheel mounting finally. Now the fun can begin making and installing shocks/springs, steering arms, radius rods and anti-roll bars. (whew)

Joe, ah... no. No working engines other than the Mubuchi/Pittman/Scuttler motors I put into these creations. No working suspension either as strength would be severely compromised. As it is, with this car, all joints are very strong due to the drilling of holes instead of simply relying on surface soldering. I would trust that this chassis could take a pretty good wall hit and survive.

Okay, I got taken to the wood shed with the last Gurney Eagle because the driver figure (Gurney) was mounted too low. I was given a few driver figures in the mean time which were raised slightly higher. So..... tell me what you think please. Too high? Too low?

Jairus,

Here's an almost similar camera perspective of the real one.

I would guess it all depends on who is driving . . . . Dan or his shorter brother.

My opinion would be the driver's head is the correct height, however the windscreen is a bit too high.

Those pictures don't give a true comparison as the color photo is of the F1 Eagle with it's Gurney-Weslake V-12 while the model Jairus is working with is the Indy Eagle, probably '68 vintage. Let's see if we can dig up a good photo of Bobby Unser's '68 Indy winning Eagle.

Here's a shot of such an Eagle, albeit with an Offy powerplant. The photo looks to be from more recent times, perhaps at a "Classics" event of some sort. Modern safety measures may actually result in slightly different driver positions/heights. Naturally, Philippe will correct me if I've misspoken.

This car is a replica of a 1966 or 67 car driven by Denny Hulme powered by a Ford 4 cammer.
Bobby Unser won in 68 with a Turbo Offy.

However, the windscreen is indeed too high in the kit. I am considering vacuum forming a new one using the kit piece as a master.

Despite what the box may say(that the model came in), the nose on your car is definitely NOT '66 or '67... at LEAST a '68; it is more "snubnosed" than the sharper beak of the earlier('66, '67) Eagles.

And don't get me wrong; I'm not complaining. The car will be stunning!

No!
Richard... I suspected the nose was wrong for 67... but looking at the 68 winning car, I can see the resemblance. Plus the directions kept referencing a Turbo-charged engine... not in the kit!

I hate that nose. If I can see a correct pic the nose will be fixed. Problem is, most of the cars from 2nd place on are hard to document in any given year.
Is the nose suppose to be more like that of the G.P. car?

Jairus,
Is this the one you are doing? I know this is the Lexan version but I thought you might want to seeit for the nose details. This is the one ED has.

Joe, Thanks for posting that. However, I think I replicated that piece already with this car:
Posted Image

I believe that was Dan Gurney's ride in 1966. Gurney ran a slightly different car with a rounded rear end in '67 with the 4 Cam Indy engine. Hulme ran a similar car in '67... but I am having troubles finding any material on the car, #42 Olsonite Eagle!

Thanks anyway... nice hand painting.

Good job, Bob! I tried and tried to find period photos to illustrate the different noses. Those photos capture the difference perfectly. Also, you can see that Dan's eyes are at a level that would be just above the level of the windscreen. And, on a last note, I "think" the #48 car of Jairus' is the car Dan used on road courses in '68. The nose really is a telltale clue to divine whether the cars are pre-'68..... sharper, beak-noses are '66/'67....... blunter, snub-nose.... '68. Of course, there are exceptions such as Dan's F1 used at Monaco where the nose was cut right off even with the radiator; the nature of Monaco being what it is, contemporary aerodynamics weren't as critical at that track and the additional cooling of a fully exposed radiator was needed that year.
