Update:

I'm a little slow getting this project finished. I've been working all week to resurrect my little three-lane 1/24 routed home track. I built a 1/32 Scalextric track on top of it. Why? I guess it seemed like a good idea at the time  :laugh2: .

Anyway the track is back and it's a blast for the older cars. My Bonner powered cars actually seem fast on it :shok: . On the big commercial tracks you need to look twice to make sure they are moving at all. :) .

So, here is the finished roller on my track:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

It has plenty of grunt and was doing wheel stands like a "Little Red Wagon"! I adjusted the drop arm stop to eliminate all but the slightest movement and started adding lead weight. I remembered this advice:

... Performance-wise, there's a good chance that putting the lead weight as far forward as possible is best. Check Tore's chassis in the fifth Rod & Custom race, his lead is very close to the guide. And that track really tested the chassis...

Thanks, Don! I placed the weight in different places on the drop arm and two weights at the very front of the arm worked best. It's nice to have a test track again!

Posted Image

I'm painting now to finish her off. I'm using a vintage Auto Hobbies interior (Professor Motor sells a repop). I painted it with Tamiya aluminum lacquer but I wanted the dashboard to be black. The thought of trying to brush paint those long straight lines with my "shaky" paint brushes wasn't good. So, I tried this:

Posted Image

I cut thin strips of tape and masked the thing off. It turned out way better than I could have done by hand:

Posted Image

The rest is all going to be my shaky brush work though.

Onward...

Oh Duffy, I done been "scooped"! :laugh2:

It's 16' long and made of MDF board painted with high gloss light grey polyurethane floor enamel, like a Hasse Nillson commercial track. It fits in one bay of our garage and still leaves room for two work benches, a small vertical mill, and a rollaway with top box. The power supply is a variable unit so I can dial back the power a bit for the faster cars:

Posted Image

The white strip down the side is an extension I added for the Scalextric track. I may remove it or turn it into a pit lane:

Back to painting the Lotus 19 Special. The interior is finished... finally :) .

It is supposed to be raining in a few days so I thought I'd better paint this thing while it's sunny and in the 70's. Since it was so nice out I also thought it might be a good time for a test:

How much beer does it take for a non painter type guy to blow on 2 colors, a backer, peal all the tape off and clean up the overspray   :)

Ready, on your mark, get set, GO!

Posted Image

We're off and painting. Just a little brew was needed to get the red color on. The silver lower body sides and white backer are next:

Posted Image

All the paint is on and it's tape pealing time. It looks like this was a about a half a brewski job :laugh2: :

Posted Image

I still need to paint all the flat black stuff on the body..........and make up some engine detail:

Posted Image

I'm getting the painting over with bit by bit...........I need to solder something  .........soon.........like a Bob Emott Low CG chassis :)

Pretty color Rick! But you can do it faster than that with more practice and.... great presentation by the way! :)

Thanks Jairus. I love metallic red...as you well know ;) .

In all of my color pictures this car looks red but I read a description of the car and it was listed as metallic burgundy. I tried mixing some burgundy but, well, I like red :D . It's not an exact scale model of Jerry Hansen's car but I tired to make it in the spirit of his car and of a 1966 commercial track slot car:

Posted Image

I really like the way the big scale (more or less ;) ) wheels and tires fill the wheel wells:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

I tried to match the weirdo wheels on the real car with Monogram Midget model kit rear inserts.....

Posted Image

.....and Russkit Lola style fronts:

Posted Image

Here's the interior with gauges, shift lever, roll bar and the engine detail:

Posted Image

Here is the view I hope to give the competition:

Posted Image

It's a bit of a handful on my home track. I'm looking forward to opening it up on Eddie's big tracks :) .

Rick, I can honestly say that your jig made building the chassis for this car a pleasure. I've got to show this picture again. Here the chassis is completely aligned and held together by the jig:

We never had it so good in the 1960's! B)

Chris, thank you  .

Rick, you have just produced a beautiful car that is pure joy to look at from the top or bottom. The chassis is nothing short of perfection. And who here doesn't like Pittcans?...no one I know of...especially with all the neat little mods you did to it. Two thumbs up sir. :good: :good:

Boy Rick, for a guy that doesn't like painting you sure seem to be able to "muddle through" pretty danged well. As with all your work, the level of detail with this paint job is to a really high standard, but then I wouldn't expect any less to go on such a lovely car. It is also an entirely appropriate paint scheme for a 1:1 race car.

Well, thank you but the painting I take on is the basic stuff. Anything fancy I rely on our artist friends Jairus and Noose ;) . I remember when I was painting the driver's goggle lens dark green I was thinking about the master modelers here on Slotblog. They paint eyeballs, facial expressions, wrinkles and folds in the clothing...holy smokes :shok: !
