Read carefullerier, Pete: it's 1/24. They made teeny little sportscars once. --Hey, y'wanna Lotus 23? I wanna someday do G. Hill in his Lotus 23, sticking waay up out of there like a Morel on a golf green.
I always trot this pic out when we talk about teenies. This is the one I mentioned back on pp.1, the car my Gp12 friend thought was 1/32.
The conversation dropped off around my neighborhood over doing a "narrow rules" Can-Am series or some such, for pre-'64 cars like Lister Jags, Birdcage Masers, heckfire the whole Times GP '63 grid for all I know! But recently we've been talking-up 1/32 racing, so there's some fun to be had.

Duffy Elva MK IV has been gathering patina in a vintage wooden slot box for almost 10 years. Y'all know I'm a builder, not a collector. So I plan to give it a lick and a polish then sell it. Looks like some of the gold paint has failed, the brass needs a shine, and some decals are crinkled.
It was tested to my satisfaction before I stored it so I know it is a good performer. Just needs a little TLC and a new home. If interested, send me a PM

SOLD to a good home. New owner requested a "Pablo" plaque so I may as well do a thorough teardown with improvements. Any flaws, I will fix best I can.
10 years of sitting causes problems. Teardowns reveal opportunities for improvements. So here we go.
The Faspearl Gold paint stripe was originally brushed on. Remember this was many years ago when I was on a steep learning curve. It should have been airbrushed. Some minor bad spots were improved tonight by brushing on a little more of the same paint. The rear has a bad spot and needs to have the interior filament tape lifted and re-done. How well it will turn out? We shall see
Why I left excess meat on the front axle, I don't know. That will be an easy fix. The tires are slightly crusty. They may just need a slight trim, or new rubber. Either way, easy fix
I've learned a lot since 2012

Removed the Jairus Watson interior and touched up the paint top and bottom. Gold stripe on body re-sprayed and backed with white. Overall, it was an improvement.
But there is still an ugly glitch above the engine compartment, caused by not backing the gold paint in the beginning. I need to find a way to fix this. Completely removing and re-doing it would probably make it even worse.
Leaving it alone and calling it a battle scar is an option. Covering it up with a decal is a possibility. I'm confident the best solution will come to me in the middle of the night, or from a Slotblog buddy smarter than me

"I need to find a way to fix this."
Painting the stripe on the outside and then clear coating the body with a gloss spray would be one possibility...

I doubt gold plastic tape is available, but I've used yellow in the past. I agree with Don that you need to do something on the outside of the body to cover up what's on the inside. In all my years of racing, I've never had to remove paint, either acrylic or solvent-based, unless it was a fresh slight overspray.
I intend to live forever! So far, so good.

Just a thought, what about cutting water slide decal paper into strips. Thinking about that my Cobra project. Blue with the 2 white stripes.
It is available in gold, and lots of other colors too.

I have a Toyota GT-1 body I never used, but painted with Createx or Faskolor gold & green 15+ yrs ago. I'll have to dig it out during the weekend to see if the gold is discolored.

Bill, look at the photo in my post #81. This wasn't a paint problem - it was inexperience on my part almost 10 years ago. I didn't back the gold paint and attached the interior with filament tape directly to the gold. No need to go to your attic, I'm sure your paint is fine
I applied Micro-Set to the new decals. Tomorrow I may apply a thin coat of "Mop-n-Glo" with a mini-sponge

Body is done. Some new decals, a thin coat of Mop N Glo over the top of the entire body and decals, interior re-installed. New pieces of cross hatch filament tape over the pin holes and re-harpooned
Excess front axle meat trimmed off and axle re-polished
Rubber is burnt toast so they came off. Rims spun clean with 0000 steel wool then polished with Mothers. Fresh new perfect fit O-rings installed. Ready to be trimmed and trued to about .740"

Disassembly was fairly smooth - didn't find any problems. Motor, gears, rear axle alignment, lead wires all fine. I soldered some new pieces of tubing atop the rails to slightly stiffen them.
Rear tires are still in good shape but need a minor trim/true. "Pablo" 15 thou engraved emblem affixed. Later today she gets tumbled

Flag and motor re-installed, new front rubber O-rings trimmed and trued to .738" OD; edges slightly beveled. Rears trued just a hair to get down to fresh meat.
Drivetrain re-tested (standard procedure for a re-build). Gears sound crappy and I don't know why. I will find the problem and fix it later today. The tubes were tested for alignment before re-assembly so that is ruled out. Maybe I'll try a (vintage) Cox crown and see what happens. Nothing leaves The Wolcott Ranch until it works right

I am not saying I can recommend the heating of the plastic gear with a lighter method, I may of only done it once in my life.
But has anyone here done this to get gears to mesh smoothly?

I've tried it a few times, but I can't say results were conclusive.
I'd try changing the gear first to see if that makes a difference. Just from the photo, it looks like your gear is kind of worn.

I tried heating the crown, didn't work on this one. I heat crowns on retro race cars all the time, it does help a little. But my experience on vintage cars is, if the mesh is bad, there is a problem somewhere. The photo makes it look worn but it's brand new.
I just woke up, I'll be fixing this today

I am confident it is in capable hands. Thanks for the feedback on gear heating guys. It did seem like a sketchy fix to me.

IMO, gear heating is for a retro racer trying to get a slight edge in lap times. It won't fix a problem.
Located the problem - not a gear issue. EB oilite is sloppy. This is why I do drivetrain tests after a motor re-installation. Fixing things at home is fun. Fixing them at the track isn't LOL
55 year old EB plastic around oilite probably failing. Next step: motor surgery
