Womps are a good idea for guys like Mark Wampler to run Breakout.
Womps are not a good idea for Slotcar Racers.

A couple months ago, I watched a womp race there at PCH. The King Cobra is sooo forgiving that even womps are not such a handful from what I've seen. I pulled out the PCH NASCAR tonight to run a few laps on our Paperclip and it was not fun. On the King Cobra, the NASCAR S16 / Champion Tubro Chassis is a blast. I think womps are a good match up for noobies at PCH. It wouldn't be a good idea at Foster's IMO.

They make 3 that will work with wings on a womp: a TI-22 (needs a bit of messing to mount the wings) a renault and I can't remember the name of the other one...RON?--Please give this guy the part numbers he needs.

Trinity also used to make a 1/32 wing kit with precut wings and diaplane. I see them once in a while on ePay

"If you can race a WOMP, you can race anything."

When I was sold (that's right I was talked out of buying a more expensive car) my first womp, Lou at Elmsford told me those words. And yes he hooked me for life by forgoing the extra $10 in his register that one time. I know it's hard to believe but it's true.

Unfortunately some turn their noses up at womps, but with a parma 502, a kremer body, and a decent controller you have a little demon on your hands. If someone takes the time to learn how to tame the ills of a womp as far as handling and chassis tuning they can apply that to most classes of racing.

To quote Lou again "Okay you made everything straight, now keep it that way by not crashing" Because of womps, I became a better (yeah I was worse) driver and because of the womp, I learned to use a soldering iron, a machinists square and precise measuring equipment. Besides you can never be accused of being mean to a marshal if you never come off right? Unfortunately I still do from time to time.

I also learned steel was fast but brass held up better and when in doubt solder in a gear protector as well as an upright brace before a race. New tires and a body that wasn't chewed also helped the car make turns and eeek a bit more out of the top end. I also learned in the battle of slot car vs. wall, the wall ALWAYS wins. Not true for the glass display cabinets.

I wish more places had a womp class.

To make things interesting - from the other side of the raceway with racer's controllers in their hands, start the race with a "Le Mans" style start. Basically a dash to the driver panel to hook up your controller. As a matter of fact I'd like to see that at a larger race... Would make a great video.....

USRA OMO with a Le Mans style start? R4 GT Coupe Le Mans start? I think this will catch on, until someone pops a knee or tears an ACL.

What do you mean "you can't tune"?

Dad takes his new misbehaving Womp home and the kids get ahold of it, and step on it.  Dad brings it back to the track and it drives much better!  That's tuning!

I would like to see womp chassis come from the factory with a hole near the motor endbell

to make it easy to lube that end of the motor. Like in the attached picture...

The hole has to be a little forward of the motor so that a luber needle can reach

the end of the motor shaft... It makes it so much easier to lube the motor.

You shouldn't be oiling that side of the motor --oil it once before the race and not again!

Having a hole in that location makes it easier to oil the front bushing if you only do it once or a hundred times. I've seen many organizations running womp & Sprints Plus chassis allow a lubricating hole in that location. They usually limit the size of the hole.

Especially when you consider that some of the parents that bring their kids are not mechanically inclined.
Once you've had a womp-womp with that lubricating access hole, you will be surprised how convenient it is.

Womps are a good idea for guys like Mark Wampler to run Breakout.
Womps are not a good idea for Slotcar Racers.

Womps are how many racers learned to be racers. I'll bet you $1 that most good womp drivers could drive a box 12 at a reasonable speed on a king given 5-10 minutes practice and instruction whereas many (not all) wing racer "pros" would crash a womp on a flat track il less than a minute. Drivers have to be able to DRIVE....

Let me illustrate my point with an example from aviation history.

During WW2 when the US Army Air Corps was training new pilots for combat, the advanced flight trainer they used to weed out the future ace pilots from the no talent soon to be non pilots was the North American AT-6 Texan. Why? Because the Texan was MORE DIFFICULT to fly than the combat planes they would be flying if their instructors saw they could handle the Texan. The less talented students mistakes showed easily. The touchy Texan taught the those students who could learn the skills needed to be successful combat pilots once they graduated out of the Texans to their actual fighters or bombers.

Now, back to the womp. Womps are the perfect cars for beginners to start with because they can teach the beginner how to drive and set up the car. Other cars do not do this as well BECAUSE they are more forgiving and better handling than womps.

1st problem: that would be modifying the chassis...
2nd problem: that would be removing weight on the bottom and raising the CG and lightening the car...bad ideas on a womp.
3rd problem: Having that large a hole there (particularly on the Parma chassis) makes it easier to bend WHEN you crash it.
4th problem: the womp and thumper chassis need weight in that spot to help the car handle. If weight is allowed, that's where it should go.

1st problem: That's why I said they should come that way from the factory. They could allow you to put lead in the hole as long as it is smooth underneath.
2nd & 4th problem: We usually put the weight a bit farther forward, but you could put the same hole through the weight. The amount of weight removed is not much.
3rd problem: We reinforce them with piano wire. There's a picture at the link below.

http://www.pbase.com...932553/original

I'll have to get some pictures of just the chassis with the extra hole.
Our track owner said that technically the holes are not legal, but he let us race.
It should at least be an option for parents who want to make it easier to oil them.
As you pointed out, it isn't a performance advantage, it just helps the Moms

who have a hard enough time fixing their kids' slot cars. Some Dads aren't

all that handy either, but most moms are not used to caring for mechanical things.

It'll help keep oil off of the track from people who end up putting too much oil

when they can't get it in the right place - and it makes it easier for the kids

who are ready to start learning how to care fore their cars themselves.

Today we had a grown man crawl on his hands and knees under the lead-on to go into the infield to fix a fallen off car in the dead man (on a King Cobra). Parents sometimes need help with knowing how to slot car race.

When allowed, we run a sheet of weight from the front of the motor to the front of the chassis with a cut out for the guide dimple. it helps the handling because the Womps originally came from Parma with a lighter, less powerful motor... (think Falcon 2 performance and weight)
