That 6 is just too disturbingly tumescent.

If it stays that way for 4 hours the driver gets a yellow flag/debris call and has to visit the infield hospital for treatment--- :laugh2:

Gap and Roush..... the biggest cheaters of all time in early Pro Stock...... quit because they couldn't win.

When NHRA instituted the "fuel" rule in Pro Stock...Glidden went from the top to the bottom real fast. He didn't win much after the fuel rule was put in place

Somehow, a bunch or rolling billboards do not appeal to me as some of the "greatest racing car liveries of all times", regardless on how spectacular they can be.
But, that's me.

Ron, Roush it was fuel maybe but with Glidden it was Nitrous. Same Alderman. Tiny gas bottle concealed within the oil pan in the case of the Dodge. :shok:

I guess they are greatest in my mind since I saw most of them race when I was a kid in Indianapolis.

Uh, too simplistic, especially when they had to GRIND the paint off the car so as to meet the maximum allowed weight! :laugh2:

I was more thinking of something as simple as the Scarab sports cars and F1 cars when Reventlow had them... :)

The true definition of livery is a badge, emblem or pattern on a uniform. The common modern use of livery is stripes and different color patterns on a vehicle to create an individual identity and attract the eye to the sponsors logos. Note here the BRM that often ran an orange stripe on the nose to differenciate it off from the Lotus.

graham-hill-brm.jpg

Isn't this great ? From back in the day when Italian cars were Red, French cars Blue , German cars Silver, so on . Is anyone else on here that don't like the ALMS Corvette team SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE YELLOW?! If those cars where white with blue stripes, with a big American Flag on the hood I would be a fan. Am I alone? A plain wrapper race car with a sponsors vinyl stickers plastered all over is not a livery.

Al's got just the right idea. This gets back to what I think of as an aesthetic (not taking anything away from Flem's celebration of a time we remember fondly).

Some of the earliest "rolling billboards" --the JPS Lotus may be the best example--managed to make a visual statement that qualifies as Art beyond just an open space for sponsors' names. (Marlboro's McLaren didn't make the grade, sorry!) I claim that a "livery" should be more than a recognizable brand association. Tough to do, maybe, but I think it's worthwhile. Another great example is the application of blue & orange in the "Gulf" cars--all sporting small logo stickers but mostly relying on a beautifully simple scheme that became memorable and iconic, so that today we can say "GULF Porsche" and everybody knows just what we mean. THAT'S a livery.

Bob Glidden was FULLY against nitrous. His sons on the other hand, not so much. The sons wanted to win, Bob wanted to win the hard way, the right way. They KNEW Wayne County was cheating, and so did everyone else. The NHRA told Wayne County they were done, they wanted to save face, people "broke in and destroyed" their stuff. I was told that "stuff" sat on engine stands untouched for years afterwards. I am not condoning want the Gliddens did, but point was proven. Billy Glidden has been tearing it up with the MT Tires entry on the ADRL circuit(by the way, GREAT show). Havent heard anything about Rusty since?

The March 81G was indeed an ugly duckling...regardless of what was plastered over it to hide its ungainliness.
However it went well... the first GTP to fully take advantage of ground effect without porpoising like the Lola T600 or the Rondeau M482.
It won the IMSA championship in the hands of drug peddler Randy Lanier.

I would like to ask an honest question to those in the know. Without factoring backing(Toyota, Nissan, etc) how did the independents make it? I ask the same thing now about the ALMS and DP racing. While yes they have sponsors to back them up, you would think those companies would rather put those 10million dollars on a Nascar team that gets national TV exposure every weekend than be on a ALMS/DP car that gets on Speed Channel a couple times a month. I love ALMS/DP racing, I just dont know how those guys survive(let alone the big dollar teams).

Tracy Krohn owns oil rigs in the gulf of Mexico. I think Stallings is CEO of Gainsco. Ganassi's daddy is a banker I think.

Krohn has said on several occassions that money has become tight at times for his cars. Now obviously he has ALOT of cars in different types of motorsports. I believe Mike Shank has had MANY money troubles in the last 5 years, due to no sponsorship dollars. BUT he is able to still be competitive thanks to help from Roush.
