Boy, what a cool collection of cars entered for this series. I'm stoked just to have an entry and really don't give a rat's patootie if my car flames out in a puff of smoke in the first leg.

I think Jairus has done a great job with the rules... walking the line between being too heavy-handed and encouraging participation and the entries shown so far prove that.

Mike Zimmerman's idler gear setup is trick as heck and getting that idler gear to be solid and free-spinning while hung off the side of the chassis must have required some engineering.

Jairus' Detroit Slider at 120 grams... even with a big ol' 26D scares me :) ... AND has a gorgeous body.

Brian McPherson's sidewinder 26D is a personal favorite just because I dig sidewinders and I'm good friends with the motor dood and the chassis dood. :)

Ralph Klose's entry is proof that the kind of ingenuity slotters regularly showed in the '60s is still alive today with his canted/sidewinder Slot.it-powered entry (!).

Phil Smith's entry almost made me choke on my coffee (went down the wrong pipe) because of its simultaneous coolness AND all those Dynamic goodies!

This is very much like the spirit that made slot cars so much fun when I was a kid. Congrats to all the entrants and to "Mr J" for putting this thing together!

Don't forget Al's little stealthy "Blacklite"! That one is totally off the hook. :mega_shok:

This won't change things too much but there is some question regarding the correct identification of the motor in this car.

Posted Image

The side is stamped "Pittman USA".
The arm has five poles.
I thought it was actually a DC-196 Pittman. Don thinks it might be an RP-66.

Any ideas?

No back axle bracket on it, like a 196, so it kinda looks like a RP-66 to me, too, The RP-77 was much bigger, and with a neo-magnet instead of the ceramic; there just might be some good speed to it, too.

A lot of great-looking rides out there for these upcoming races. ;)

Hi guys,

I got out my collection of Pittmans and compared to the picture.

I did a side by side of a Pittman DC66-6 and a Revell-Pittman RP66, both fresh out of their boxes.

This is not a Pittman DC66-6, but looks to be a positive hit on the Revell-Pittman RP66 judging by the paper insulator under the comm and wires. The Pittman has the wires leading to the comm epoxied to the paper and the Revell does not.

Another thing to check, the RP66 that I have has four fine swedge or score marks on the output shaft to help retain a press on pinion. The Pittman is smooth. Blowing up the picture, I think I see the marks.

Oh, and yes, both are stamped Pittman USA.

I'd say Don and Bugman are both correct. It's an RP66. :)

As has been said before, some great-looking cars there. I'm so pleased to be in this series, especially when I thought I had no chance of getting a car built in time. I'm still worried about the motor though, and will be putting another together just in case.

You are doing a fabulous job, J, with all the photos of the entrants. That is going to be a really nice thread when they are all assembled and off.

Very cool cars, everyone did great :D . Thanks, Jairus, for such great pictures of them all :thank_you2:

If the Vintage Police are awarding a prize for old school period "Korrect" I bet they'd pick Repelatron Dyna-Slider. :good:

I hope it runs and I hope it arrives on time. Just painted today and I have to finish the decoration and give the chassis a final cleaning. I hope to test it tonight. Sits like a 4X4 and has no pans. Lets see what happens.

Joe, that is beautiful! :victory:

Thank you, Rick, but I think the majority of builders this season went vintage. It does my heart good to see so many painfully Korrect builds.

Yes they did Jairus and their cars look really nice. But when I first saw your car I flashed back to the Dave Lenz box of original thingies from the 1960's San Francisco Bay Area ;) .

Thanks J and Oscar. Just got back from Slots A Lot. Do not use a drop hinge with a strong motor and sticky tires :shok:. Handled so so and pulled a wheelie every time you punched it . However the vintage Mura had extreme power ( just a psych out to the other competitors) I'm going to eliminate the hinge. The problem is I sold Barney my last unused brass drop arm. I will have to pirate one someplace else. Another issue is I soldered everything together and its a pain to disassemble. Late nite bash tonight and back to the track tomorrow.

Jairus, You are correct sir :D. I did try to move the arm back at the track but it did not eliminate all of the drop. There was still a little slop. I have used the drop hinge before with good results but this motor has too much power and just wants to lift the nose every time you goose it. I have to go with the standard aluminum tongue now . I think the more rigid approach is the way to go on this one.

joe i gotta laff,,,when i 1st started testing my 2 Dynamic cars for this race,i had hinged front on both cars, even with stock motor they would wheelie so badly down the straight and thru the turns,i took em off and got 2 regular straight tongues "END OF WHEELIE & HANDLING PROBLEMS",,i threw some weight on the front of the tongue (14gr.) and it handles very good now,
still a hot looking ride Joe

Back in 68 or 69, with the tongue pushed back all the way,IIRC,it was virtually solid.
That was with the aluminum tongue, and probably on a "closed" end.

Jairus,
Just curious, does the Phil Smith entry (with a hinge) have any movement?

Rob, I laughed hard at that one!!! Yeah, I have gott'n a few emails and PM's from Pablo regarding that subject. But... you have to consider that it was HIS build in the first place that got me thinking about the theme for this race. So... since I based it on his car, he was already done and has been waiting for over a year to see it begin.

Jairus,

Yeah, slightly. About 3/32" movement at the guide pin. This might be designed in as the back end of the tongue looks to be slightly chamfered but slid up tight.
The gear ratio appears high to me but a quick test on the Z-force track suggested that on a larger track this baby will scream! No sign of wheelies to my eyes but I couldn't hammer the trigger either as I didn't want to break anything.

Thanks for the positive input. All of the cars look fantastic. Thanks again for all the effort Jairus and others. Put an aluminum tongue on, brought it back to the track and promptly hit the wall bending the front axle and breaking the rear rim :shok:. Man, I suck at driving :laugh2:. Anyway, added some weight and it goes OK. I can tell you that without pans and junk I probably don't stand a chance handling wise compared to the others. I added radius rods to strengthen the front axle and finished decorating it. Went out today.
