Rick,
I see 6 ounce (170 gm) cars with "A" can motors in that race report, and all of them are endbell drive...
It will be really interesting to see what happens; 5/8" wide tires puts a LOT of rubber on the track (roughly equivalent to a pair of 1-1/4" wide tires).

Here is my recreation (now at LASCM) of Dougs winning car in the above race report. I used lots of Doug's design ideas but narrowed my chassis to just 2 piano wire rails instead of 4 brass rails per side:
Here's my finished 6-wheel chassis:
The chassis movement includes non-floppy pans that form the plumber system. The front of the pans drop down with the drop arm and the rear of the pans rise upward:
Working front to back, here's the plumber pivot on the drop arm:
The two front cross brace-body mounts. Their lower rods are cut out to allow the drop arm to, well, drop :
The rear body mount goes over the frame rails to act as a plumber-pan down stop:
Wheels and tires are next..........

Thanks guys. I was going to do wheels and tires next but I just couldn't resist setting up the rear end. It's a ball bearing salesman's dream come true:
It's an all vintage Weldun affair with a 48 pitch crown and 64 pitch spurs and idler gears. The 64P mesh smooth as silk:
Now onward to wheel and tiredom:

Riggen's it is! Lots of them in the race report and Steve and I had some lovely repop rears made up. Also using EJ's repop Auto Hobbies Halibrand wheel inserts, vintage but still pretty fresh Riggen orange rubber and vintage Riggen fronts:
I edited this post to include the Model Racing Journal November 15, 1968 Riggen ad for these wheels. They are also pictured in the December 1968 Car Model Magazine new products section:

Hey, I found another use for my Rick's Jig. It holds the wheels while the contact cement sets up and the mounted tires and wheels while they dry overnight. Also, I machined off the inner lip. I don't believe they serve a real purpose and it makes sliding them into the tires easier:
My old vintage tire machine sliced off the extra Crap-O-La:
I used the amp meter reading on the Koford power supply to get all the tires the same diameter. I also used the same locked position on the Hudy and the same RPM for all four tires:
The tires are about .040" oversize. I'm waiting for the tires to settle a bit before final trimming. The wheel inserts were painted with Tamyia TS-42 Light Gun Metal spray paint. The knock offs were touched with a bit of chrome silver:
Me like :
Motor time..........

Just when you think the Riggen repop wheels can't get any sexier those painted inserts really contrast with the polished rim !
Nice set of tools too Rick, spy the old Dynamic test bench .
Who's brand of weatherstrip adhesive is that?
Posted 23 June 2013 - 03:44 PM
Hi Paul,
I admit it, I have a wheel insert fetish
That adhesive is by 3M.

Next up Paul, I'm going to try and make one of these up from parts. The photo is courtesy of PdL's excellent thread on the history of Mura motors here on Slotblog:
Here's an ad for the motor from Model Racing Journal November 15, 1968:
Mike Morrissey used one of these motors according to the above race report so I thought it would be fun to try to make one up and see how they run. Here's my pile of parts less the armature:
The Certus top and bottom magnet shims are something I'm going to add to my motor...I just can't help myself
The armature is next........
