Nice! :)  Regarding  the amount of lift, I'd think too much would be preferable to not enough. Any surplus could be taken out with guide spacers.

I made a new offset tool and this one is .020 deeper, which seems to be about right? Its works fine with the flat guide, now to make one to fit the formed unit.

I think this Midwest copy is good to go. Will wait to hear what Jairus reports...........

Stupid question:  How is the front axle carrier mounted to the midwest tongue?

:shok:  Oh nutsacks .... didn't think of that Mike ! Unless the original Midwest tongue was meant for soldering on a dropped /cranked 1/16 front axle??? :unknw:

Dynamic made some brass front axle carriers they sold with 1/4" dia. nylon bushings. It was Dynamic part #585.

Ah I've seen those on epay before , "brass front end with bushings" Do they solder on Bill? Looking at the Midwest tongue there are no holes near the front to bolt an axle carrier to?

Stupid question:  How is the front axle carrier mounted to the midwest tongue?

The midwest tongue was for scratchbuilders who wanted to use the Dynamic motor carrier for a precise motor to rear axle mounting. The rest of the chassis is scratch built from brass rod and steel wire.
Another kit includes this tongue along with all the brass tube and wire rod to make a "Detroit Slider" chassis.

Ah that explains it , thanks for posting , the Midwest tongue really finishes off the Dynamic motor mounts beautifully :D

Okay.... Rick sent me three guide tongues to examine and review.
Here is what I got and for purposes of this review they will be identified as "A", "B", and "C".
IMG_1339-vi.jpg

Yeah... I picked one I liked right off. but.....

The first one:
IMG_1341-vi.jpg

The depth of the guide off-set is huge at 5/32" compared to a stock Dynamic cast tongue.  This might be good if you are using a vintage Dynamic or Cox guide that needs such an offset.  Plus... it also gets the weight down low even if you have recessed braid on your track and want to run small 3/4" fronts.
The hole placement is strange (see the image above) with one lonely only at the back and equally spaced ovals above.

IMG_1342-vi.jpg

The second tongue offset is same as A, but the mounting holes are cleared out to only three slots allowing a much broader adjustment.  I like this one alot better than A.  Nose shape is different with neither being close to the brass Dynamic piece.

IMG_1340-vi.jpg

C I liked best mostly because the depth of the drop is nearly equal to the stock guide and the nose shape can be modified to almost perfectly match a stock Dynamic brass tongue.  Plus... the mounting holes exactly match a stock cast tongue.

If we could only get the same spacing found on the stock Dynamic tongue and drop and nose shape.....
But! With all three one has the flexibility to choose multiple options. So while I like C best, someone else might like B or A.

IMG_1327-vi.jpg

Okay, for everyone not as informed.  Here is a stock vintage Dynamic brass tongue mounted in "Manta Rays" (Ray Price) 2011 Dynamic Challenge entry.

MantaRay2-vi.jpg

MantaRay3-vi.jpg

Note that the nose has been strengthened. This is necessary due to the fact that Dynamic used medium soft brass in the manufacture of the tongues.  That is bad as this poor car needed repaired more than once due to the tongue bending.
If memory serves.... Rick is using hard brass making any of the tongues he produces head and shoulders above a stock packaged soft brass tongue in my opinion.

Respectfully submitted,

Does anyone have an uncut original brass Dynamic piece to measure for length?

Thanks, 3.3 is close enough. Ok Pablo, might as well give me slot/hole spacing too. :)

The samples Rick sent me are beautifully made out of a heavier gauge brass. The original pieces were very fragile and bent if you looked at them wrong. Rick's are strong and really nice pieces. :good:

Of course my vote goes to following the vintage part as much as is practical, BUT improving their strength seems like a nice touch in a reproduction  :)

Here's thought. How about a series of shims that fit the Dynamic guide tongue and front axle mount so we could adjust for different diameter front tires. I think the original Dynamic axle mount was for 3/4" fronts???

Gary,

The die is out for revision to get guide hole closer to the main part. The cost is still not solid but I will have some firm price soon. I had to get the feedback from the gurus. Jairus has set me straight on the Midwest clone and the others on slot dimensions etc. As soon as the die is back, we can wrap this all up.....................
