Picture all the big Teams at the R&C series races, Cox, Russkit, and the like.. When in walks the Team Pittman guys! :D

Using their new to the market 6000/6001 Pittcan motors, vastly superior build quality and on paper pretty high specs but heavy weight and high center of gravity.

Now this is all hypothetical but there was a Team Pittman that started racing in the "Pro" races using the 6000/6001 motors.

The fact the Team actually existed and used that particular motor comes in very handy for me as out of the spare parts collection the only period Korrect motor is the Pittcan! All the others I have are too new for the trip back in the Way Back When Machine .

So unless parts or other weird happenings change things this will be a Pittman powered "Team Pittman" R&C entry.  :dance3:

And the heart of the beast:

Also have an original Russkit 16D motor bracket but that won't be of use going with the Pittcan (saving that for a future Jail Door build :good: )  So either scratch build or I wonder if the Russkit 26D bracket would work? Seeing as the two motors are the same size..

This could take a while but it is a "what if" car so could just turn up on the trailer and not enter the race :laugh2: back in '66.

Team Pittman sounds good.

And no one should be concerned about a car being perfect. Some of the entrants were pretty junky.

Philippe has posted a few photos of even the good cars and they weren't fine builds when seen up close. Mr. Hall did a good job of presenting the cars in the magazine.

Welcome aboard, Paul  :D

I have a short history (written by PdL) of Team Pittman, and some photos of a replica Team Pittman car built by Australian Mr. Col Neaton.  I could post them up here if you like.

The Russkit 26D bracket might need minor tweaking or trimming, but it "should" work just fine.

You have to remember that outside of morrissey most everyone was a kid of 16 and buildings those lumps with soldering guns.

Paul, I have a number of cars from a gentleman named John Harris who raced for Pittman. If you go to my daily history post and look for  "John Harris" you will see some Pittcan powered machines.

I think you will have more luck modding a 36D bracket for this motor.

Paul, I have some weird inline brackets that I don't know what they are for.

You want me to post a pic of them ? Maybe, just maybe, it might be what you need.

Thanks for the picture Pablo :) Definitely some unique brackets! Looking at them either of the two at the front might work .. They look like they maybe tall enough for the motor... it mikes at around 20mm high, the huge can bearing is almost 8mm :shok:

Both of those 2 bracket holes mike at .795mm

Tell me what other measurements/pics you need.

I'm out of my league here.

I'm out of my league too Pablo :laugh2: that size is bang on for the bearing hole.. not really any other pictures or sizes needed... are they for bearings or axle tubing? It's really just a bracket with a big enough hole for the bearing I think...

Paul,

Here is a short history of Team Pittman that PdL wrote on OWH about 12 years ago:

In late 1966, Pittman introduced a new motor specifically designed for slot car use. It had the general bulk of the Mabuchi FT26 but offered a much higher manufacturing quality. It used the arm of the previous 196B in a new steel formed can fitted with a die-cast zinc end bell and Pittman-style overhead brush assembly.

The magnets were stronger than most out there, and as usual the quality was vastly above that of the Japanese motors of the period. There were two versions, one with flanged and sealed ball bearings (model 6001BB, $9.95) and with plain sintered bronze oilites (model 6001, $4.95).

To help popularize these new mills which cost nearly twice as much as the mid-size Mabuchi, Pittman formed a pro-racing team, composed of two hot-shoes of the time: John Harris and Mike Smith, both from the Chicago area.

John set to build the latest pro-trend chassis as seen on the east and west coasts, and attempted to qualify at the top events, but while the 6001 were decent motors, they did not have the legs (and the brakes) of a well set up FT16, and it was not long until Pittman withdrew their support.

The John Harris PdL mentions is no doubt the very same as Joe Lupo (Lone Wolf) mentioned in his post.

Here are some photos of a replica Team Pittman car that Mr. Col Neaton built:

Col made his motor bracket completely from scratch:

Pitman3.jpg

Here it is fitted into the chassis:

Pittman13.jpg

Almost finished.  All those rails are actually tubing!

Pittman14.jpg

Col's finished replica against background photos of the original:

BTW: Those background photos are from the OWH thread.  If you are willing to search a bit, you might still be able to find that original thread.

Paul, the steel bracket is as follows:

width .950

vertical mount holes are about .485 apart

axle holes are .157 ID

from ground zero to halfway up the bushing hole is about .388

The brass bracket is:

width .912

vertical mount holes are about .485 apart

axle holes are .248 ID

from ground zero to halfway up the bushing hole is about .385

Cool! Thanks for pics & info Steve ! Nice scratch built bracket he made, looks similar to the bracket on the left front Pablo posted.

Nice Powered by Pittman decals.

Pablo.. both brackets are bang on for the bearing hole and vertical mount spacing :)

Steve, thanks for posting the info and that replica. She's a beauty

Paul, I looked through the extra parts I got with the John Harris stuff, sorry no motor brackets.

Paul, none of the John Harris cars I have ( over 80 of them ) are decorated with Team Pittman decals as shown on that replica. That does not mean it's incorrect, I just don't have any like that. Many of the cars sport the small red Pittman decal as shown on the originals.

I believe the replica builder used a few different Russkit sheets to make a design of his own style.

Here is the sheet that has all the words except Team on it. Those came on another sheet. I just realized there is only one white Pittman on this sheet so he had to use at least three different sheets to make his design.

Bingo - right down to the Weller soldering gun and the lumpy chassis!  :laugh2:  :victory:

Paul,

I've thought about doing that myself - but thinking about it is as far as it got.

Some things, like the "ski jumps" on the Red American 150, nylon axle bushings and screw mounted bodies, just work better as...  memories.  :good:

hey ya all,

With the Pittman 6001 's in all series, two changes need to take place. The coms were weak and I replaced them with either RAM Engineering or drilled out Mura coms and the end bell screws need to be counter sunk flush to secure and locate the end bell. If you want to rewind the arm, remember com timing is 90* off from a Mabuchi.

Great build Paul!

One of the most important aspects of these builds is to have fun. Remember, you've gone back in time so you are the person you are today.

If you'd have more fun using a Weller soldering gun and a Russkit Adjust-O-Jig then you should. If you'd rather use your Rick's Jig and Hakko iron then you should......have fun! :)

I've thought about using my Adjust-O-Jig but I enjoy building on my Rick's Jig so much I probably won't.

Hmmmm......I'm glad I remembered to stick my Rick's Jig in my pocket before I got in that "Wayback Time Machine" :dance3:

Onward Paul!
