... the only concern is going to be how to attract a younger crowd...

Seemingly only a few of us have that concern in mind. Good, bad or indifferent, it is what it is. I believe that having a "Flexi" class with appropriate bodies would attract some of the less fortunate but that's not the only problem. There are too many who appreciate the talented but significantly frown on kids or new racers participation.

This may not seem applicable but yesterday I had my mobile track set up at a Mustang Car Show (and other Fords) at the Ventura Marina. It was pretty big, maybe 100 cars or so. As I walked around I saw many old and frowning faces. Is it the sign of the times? The weather was nice, some high fog drifting around some but it was nice. Could've been my Chihuahuas too... Some folks are just too particular on how things should be.

Tony, I've seen you post several times about racers participating to win. I can honestly say that is not me. I DO like to reach a podium for some recognition but Sat at the SoCal Can-Am, I qualified 11th and finished 7th and was pleased. With more practice, tuning and equal luck I could do even better but it's the overall program that attracts me.

Getting local talent involved in a big race has always been a mystery. Many reasons for their lack of participation. Would love to hear more about this Dave dood. :D

What a great show!

From my perspective, some quick comments:
...
2. This kind of racing is getting bigger faster than any of us had ever hoped or dreamed. It is amazing how wide the appeal is, and the only concern is going to be how to attract a younger crowd.

I would like to offer my congratulations to all involved in this race. I spent the whole day (off and on)
refreshing my page to catch the latest happenings. Great job!!

Younger set? Where are they? Most of them don't own a soldering iron. AND wouldn't know how to use it.
If the younger set wants in, they should learn to build first, THEN how to pull a trigger. Fat chance that will happen.

Personally, I like this class just as it was designed, for the builder-hobbyist. When you change it to attract the so-called "younger set", it will go the way of all the rest.

Bob,

I think all the older guys are back in retro racing to scratchbuild again, race, have fun, and relive our pasts a little. The only draw for a "new" racer to get involved in retro racing is to win. The cars mean nothing at all to them as they never raced them, and scratchbuilding is a concept beyond most people's imagination these days.

Once a region digs up all the old guys who want to race again, we are faced with the prospect of trying to find a way to get new blood into retro racing to grow it.

While the old guys dominate the D3 racing on the Left Coast, we have new and younger faces at each race.

First, I'd like to thank Mike Swiss for giving me the opportunity to have such a great weekend, and also to race against such tuff competion.

I would also like to thank all the guys that flew and drove many miles to attend, because that's what made it so great.

I hope there will be many more events of this kind and magnitude, because they are truly great for our hobby.

With ALL my thanks and Best Wishes to all who were a part of the Sano,

Having said that, am I crazy or did cheater drive all the way to Chicago from his secret naphtha-soaked bunker to spend a weekend reporting the action but not racing himself :shok: :o ??? Knowing how much he likes to race, I can only surmise he was either too drunk or too dedicated to his journalistic craft to put down the pen and paper long enough to race one stinkin' lousy little race..

I was thinking the same thing?!... wazzup, Cheater? Did they at least let ya make a lap?

Guys, thanks for all the kind words. They mean more than you could know.

I really was planning to race at least once or twice. Hworth08 mailed me 3-1/2 cars (one was an almost-finished chassis) from the 1,000 or so in his trackside credenza, and I modified two of them (with Don's permission) to suit my weird preferences (for things like 3/32" axles). And Jay painted me a few bodies.

But I knew when Mike PM'd to ask me to do the coverage that there was a distinct possibility I wouldn't have time to race and that proved to be the case. Even said as much to Jay before we left town. Like Tony P says, someone's always got to eat it, and at Da Sano, it was me and a fine meal it was. Bothers me not at all and it gives me a warm and fuzzy to be able in my own way to include all of those who couldn't come to the Sano.

Having done OWH's "Almost Live" coverage from the USRA Scale Nats at Electric City Raceway back in 2003 (IIRC), I knew that doing the reporting would impact my racing. What I didn't count on was Mike Swiss's talents in pushing the program along. I literally ran between the tracks and Mike's PC trying to keep up with the flow of data. It seemed like the "two minutes off" applied to 'between races' as well as 'between heats'! :shok: (And that's no complaint, as I've started way too many races in the wee hours of the morning at other events.) I realized early on that for me, racing the Sano was going to be out of the question. Which really had a silver lining: if I didn't race, I could avoid looking to be as bad a racer as Pappy did! :laugh2:

I'll be hooking the digicam up in a few minutes to add the couple of hundred photos I couldn't add to this reporting before we left. I may not get it all done tonight, for reasons you will learn if you keep reading this overly-long post.

Jay and I had a 7:15 am flight from Midway Monday morning, which meant we had to get everything packed Sunday evening and to set the alarm for 4:30 am in order to drop the rental in time. When we got to the airport at about 5:15 or so, the lines at the TSA inspection were over 100 yards long! A lady ahead of us indicated she flew out of Midway at the same time every Monday and that she'd never seen lines that long. And as we waited in line, the handle broke on the slot box that was my carry-on, so I had to cradle the darn thing in my arms for the rest of the trip. After the obligatory hand inspection, Jay had to toss his Go-Jo hand cleaner, our only loss on the trip due to the TSA.

Unfortunately, our flight from Chicago to Birmingham was not direct; we had to change planes in Nashville. Arrived in BHM right on time at 9:45 am Central, and then Jay realized he'd packed his keys, so we sweated a little waiting for his bag. If it had gotten lost, we we're going to be in a serious pickle, as Mrs. Jay was in Orlando! But Southwest (a TERRIFIC airline in every regard on this trip) popped the bags up within minutes of our appearance in baggage claim and Jay was kind enough to let me wait at the curb rather than have to carry a slot box under one arm while pulling a big wheeled bag to our parking spot.

Then we had to drive from Birmingham to Anniston, which takes a bit over an hour, unpack our suitcases to separate out the slot stuff (I had brought some tools and my things had gotten combined with his). Then I had to drive back to Norcross, about 100 miles, which was a rough trip because of traffic problems and because I was so sleepy I had to stop and nap for a few minutes a couple of times. I hit the bed for a few hours sleep the very instant I got home.

Here's the fun part: my company has agreed to be the backdrop for a series of live promotional TV feeds tomorrow, featuring the Discovery Channels' Mike Rowe from "Dirty Jobs" as the on-air talent. They have to get an early start and so I have to open the building at... 3 am Eastern!

So if I don't get the Sano report completely done and polished tonight, I hope you guys will cut me a little slack. I know Pappy won't, but that's okay; I know how he is...

The Sano...

An event I will NEVER forget. I second Greg and Dennis' comments wholeheartedly.

Mike Swiss just flat-out had one of the best events I have ever been at. The driving skills of these guys was awesome. Everything from tech (Mike did it and did it well while pre-race time everyone thought I was going to tech :laugh2: ) to the excellent way all of the races were run and the ceremonial ending was just sooo good. It was a blast meeting so many of you in person and I want to thank everyone for their compliments and kind words. Ray Price was a huge help in getting everyone comfortable with stuff as we all approached the counter and a huge thanks for threading those guides!

Mr. Samson (yes, Mister) is one of the finest gentlemen I have ever met and it was a pleasure to be in his company in the pit area and to see some of wonderful car collection.

To Tex and Butch.. .you guys rock!

Greg and Jay... I hope you guys really get the Retro thing going in the SE and I thoroughly enjoyed your company and conversation...

To the body man himself, Mr. Outisight Hershman, it was great to meet you in person and thaks for your support for this new "old" class of racing.

Dave Fiedler, Don, Jay deserved to be winners because they drove unbelievably.

Mr. Alpha Paul was very, very impressive on the flat track for not having driven it much.

And finally, to my buddy Ray Carlisi... I did leave some stuff for you to buy before we left. :laugh2:

And to Mike Swiss: I am proud to call to call him a friend. :D

Anyone know what the going rate for a "contract" is in SoCal? I already know what it costs in Chicago and Joisey and fully expect it to be more expensive in La-La land.

In P's case, it's gonna be worth whatever it costs... like divorce! :laugh2:

Thanks to all who attended this race.

As one that has only raced these "new old" cars for a short time, third race with D3 cars and sixth-seventh race with F1 cars, I was just thankful I didn't get in the way of too many people.

Saturday I was so apprehensive that I just took myself out of the game. Sunday I was way more relaxed and my finishes showed it.

Thanks to Swiss, who's raceway I have the great pleasure of racing at, and to Dave Feidler for all his help.

Looking forward to more of these type of races.

Okay, you bums, I have to get up in three hours so you're just gonna have to wait until tomorrow for the rest of the Sano pics. I did import them, all 400 of 'em, into the Mac and have them organized. The resizing (where needed) and posting is going to have to wait until I get off work tomorrow.

Try not to drool on your keyboard, as it tends to short them out... :laugh2:

I just wanted to say what a great time I had at The Sano. Mike Swiss did a super job of keeping the program moving and keeping everyone in line. Ray Price was always there behind the counter if Mike couldn't be and really was a big help to us out-of-towners. The facilities were first rate; very good pit space, a very challenging flat track (loved it!!) and a King with a bit of an attitude kept it "interesting".

Best of all was the other racers, a super bunch of guys that really made the event one of the best I've ever attended. If you missed this one you really missed a great race. But judging from the fun and comaraderie everyone experienced, I suspect that The Sano will be around for quite some time to come.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR IN CHICAGO!!!

Thanks so much to Mike Swiss for doin' da Sano! I had the time of my life. Great racing - for sure, but so much more. I was so thrilled to just walk around and meet the guys and check out all the great cars. Just like the old days - all these great designs and ideas. Makes me realize what a cookie cutter thing we have going without this retro racing. Even the work bench is exciting again. Paul and Dennis - you know what I mean.

What a great bunch of jokers. Some of the guys had me laughing so hard, I could hardly keep racing. And real gentleman racing - no kamikazi pilots here.

And the great retro paint jobs by all. Noose, you're just plain nuts. Fantastic stuff, the best weekend ever.

Thanks to all who attended - new friends and old friends. You guys made it "the Happening" that it is.

I may agree that the "younger set" might not be able to identify with Can-Am cars, but if new blood isn't constantly attracted to replenish the old, you can kiss the D3 concept goodbye within 5 or 6 years. I have yet to see anyone able pull on a controller for their grave. :hang3: :wizard:

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to exclude new and perhaps younger racers to D3. I just don't want to change the concept to accomodate them.

Let the potential racers adjust, not the Series. Going "fast" is not the concept that we are talking about in D3. Note the posts here. Have you seen any posts about how "fast" the car's were? The main subject has been the chassis builder, the paint jobs, the bodies, the driving, and the fun that was had by all. This will bring in new talent!!!

OK, the wife and I made it home safe and sound a couple hours ago.

I'll keep it short for now but just want to say I had a blast! When Mike first announced Da Sano, I felt this was an opportunity to be a part of something big in slot racing, bigger than anything I had previously participated in. As mentioned previously, I was one of those who attended just to be a part of "the happening". I went to pretend to be a slot racer and to race alongside some truly GREAT slot racers; I succeeded.

When I first read that Mike was going to inject cash $ into the event, I became apprehensive, afraid that the event would become more about the $ for some. My apprehension was ill-founded. It was loads of fun for myself and I personally never heard anyone cry about whatever problems they may have encountered. I met a bunch of really nice guys and hope to race with them again someday; thanks to all for just letting me live out a Walter Mitty dream in your presence.

As mentioned, Mike ran a tight ship when it came to race-directing. As a result, the races went off pretty quickly and smoothly... thanks, Mike. Whether by design or as a fortunate, unforeseen side-effect, keeping the track marshals and spectators quiet while trackside made the RACES the focus of everyone's attention (as it should be); thanks again, Mike.

In preparation for DA Sano, I used up all my brownie points (and all spare $ and THEN some!) and won't be making any out-of-town slot racing trips for a while. I went to the Left Coast in April and now to the heartland of America in October. If I can manage to not spend too much $ this coming year and build up my brownie points again, I'd like to visit the East Coast guys next fall.

Forgot to thank the guy who signed me up on this site - Greg Wells. What a job he did all weekend. I've never seen anyone bust their a__ to get the results out so quickly. I'm not a computer guy, as a matter of fact my friends MG, Bob, and Ray might tell you I'm stuck in the '60s. Simply shocking.

If you're ever at a race with Dennis Samson, you've gotta ask to see his stuff. Made my day.

The icing on the cake: getting a shout-out from the pros I used to read about and idolize as a kid. How cool is that! Thanx, guys.
