Greg,

When you post these ads would you kindly note the date of the ad (if you have it); this way we can see the development of the cars.

Thanks,

Bill,

Almost all of these ads are snagged from Facebook, which means I have no idea of where or when they were published. Sorry...

Here's a pretty cool A/FX commercial from 1971.

Maybe someone can identify the awesome Can-Am car the Oscar Kovelski Auto World McLaren is dueling with on the track.

Actually had that one in the early 70's, was my favorite. Might still have it! Called something with "Turbine" in the name!

Just picked up a couple ads with slot cars from various sellers.

The first is an odd one: Playboy, May 1962, and a brand of shirts I've never heard of, that may not have survived beyond this issue. So all the cool Ivy League guys were racing slot cars, eh? And, goodness gracious, not your plebian Strombecker, or, heaven forbid, Eldon, but good British quality, Scalextric by gum! I don't think $3 or 4 was a high price for a shirt even then...

Truval%20shirt%20ad%20Scalex-Playboy0562

Now here's a more recent one: the seller wasn't sure, but he thinks it came from Car magazine, July 2005 - and Smart is using Scalextric to sell their new car in the UK!

Smart%20Scalex%20ad-Car0705_zpsctgrzcaq.

And back to where we started from, another slot car shoe ad, by Pedwin again - think the CEO was a slotter?

Here are a few ads that ran in the DC comic mags that hit newsstands in November 1965:

And many of the DC comics that hit the newstands fifty years ago this month contained this short feature:

Thanks much for that Cap's, Vay - I hadn't seen that! Interesting figures too, if they're accurate, and first time I've seen a distinction between hobby shops that add tracks, and commercial raceways... total of 3,500 for early '66 sounds about right - assuming other figures we've seen are correct!

It was in all the model car mags Vay.

Just by chance, happened to open to the right page on my index and it was in the Jan 65 issue of Model Car & Track, for instance...

The first time I ever saw an ad for individual slot cars was in the fall of 1963 in Boy's Life magazine. It was an ad for the first series of Monogram slot cars including the 1934 Ford Coupe, 1936 Ford Coupe, and 1956 Chevy. I was captivated! I wanted one of those cars so badly!

More likely it was the fall of '64, Vay - the Monogram cars didn't come out till '64.

Fall of '63 is when the first Revell cars were announced, and I think it was mostly components - their kits would be end of the year or early '64...

At my age if my memory of things is off by only a year I classify it as a major victory.

I'm going to have to track down some reading copies of Boy's Life magazine from 1964-65.

Lots of 'em on eBay, Vay - and don't overpay, it's circulation was probably up in the millions, so lots should be left.

They had slot car ads in pretty much every issue around that time, and there were also slot car prizes in whatever Boy Scouts were selling door to door... only a couple real slot car articles however.

Scout's honor!
