I ran both my rails that had drop arms (Canadian wheelie bars ! :wacko2: ) in the last proxy and as far as I was told they presented no problems to the cars running, Dont back out!!  Bring it I think we should dub you the "Alberta Clipper"

Ha ha Paul, except I now live in British Columbia! :) I guess wheelie bars = drop arms is a "Canadianism." I now understand that wheelie bars are the assemblies at the rear of the car that prevent the car from doing wheelies. The drop arms allow them to do wheelies, hopefully without de-slotting.  Hope I've got that right!

Hey Jim, Lookin Goood man!

Yeah ... the zip ties gotta go. sorry ... too new.

You could use twist ties, lacing cord (wax coated string) or copper wire bare or coated. Magnet (armature) wire twisted would work too. Screw down clamps or even epoxy .. that could be messy ... lol

I'm glad your joining us ... please give a heads up on what you would like to enter.

Thanks Bob, for the definitive answer. I have some brass wire (from the 60s, so very authentic) that I can use. I will enter the cars (both rails) sometime this week.

Cheers, Jim.

Ok, I did some more digging and found stuff I forgot I had ! see photos below

Also, the 2 ram motors seem unique ! At first one would think someone did the modifications but when you look close it seems they might have come from RAM this way?  One box had DC-850 6V and the other DC-857 6V, one has thinner plates then other, both have very well installed BB's ! Both appear new with no run time on them, magnets feel strong ( when rotating armature) Ive tried searching for any possible info on these modified RAM Motors, Would appreciate any wisdom out there. May get at least one in a rail before next proxy race.

Great stuff!

To me both the RAM 850 (thicker lams) and 857 (thinner lams) are basically new/unused, the endplates are seriously modified/shaped/lightened. .. plus missing a few lams to further the weight-loss...

what you have there are 2 very well hopped up motors ready to rock !!

Whoever did the shaping on the endplates did a great job.

I agree, it almost looks  like they came from the factory that way, both are identical in  shape/design with NO file or machine marks, The BB's look as if they were factory installed also ! thats why I wondered if RAM had offered this service ?

I have no clue if RAM ever did modified motors from factory, all I do know is that the shaped plates are similar to a lot of racer modified plates ..

But as you say with no file or machine marks you could be lead to believe they were factory modified :)

Just my opinion from 'the day'...

Ram MAY have made some custom motors, but I never saw them, myself.  Ball bearings - maybe. Endplates likely to have been Dremel drum sanded to finished shape.  Spacers easily made and short lamination count done to save weight. Lams are wide enough to cover the stack lengths and 'may(?)' focus magnetic field better.  Trying to save weight was a goal with these bricks and many saved so much mass, they fell apart when they hit something unintended.

I had a lathe and drill press in my dad's workshop. Some exotic work was no problem.

So far good ideas , Just hoping some of the real "oldies" ( If you an "OLDIE" thats a true compliment from Me) out there might have some thoughts. Either way these chunks look near brand new !

Wow, you actually forgot you had all this stuff? That's quite a collection!

The modified motors certainly look professional. Aside from the laminations, end plates and BB's, the springs look pretty hefty - maybe to apply more pressure to the brushes, which I've found results in higher revs.

Have you tested these motors? How do they run?

Paul, that is a wonderful collection. :shok:

We're jealous and I think you could have your own damn proxy with all those cars. No postage required...   :dash2:  :laugh2:

What next? - Can I have some ...  please

BTW, This motor started out as the threaded shaft DC-85 that we traded for ... I think... :wacko2:

Never saw or heard of any Ram factory modified versions.

Probably a machinist or very skilled hobbyist who did these - maybe even somebody thinking to turn them into a small business. I assume with a jig it wouldn't have been too hard for a skilled guy to turn out identical items... Rick, are you there?

Nice stash in any case!

Ok, I figured this is where I should ask for input here. one of the vintage cars (if you seem mu "stuff" ) that is an Open frame, Inline Pittman motor?

Looking at as much as I can find it appears to be a Pittman DC-70 (maybe?) It has a green wire , 5 pole arm (like a DC-195 ? ) but not that small angled side piece. You can see someone took time to polish and balance the arm.

It came as a wrecked brass frame car, the rear portion was seriously wrecked and Im not that much of a craftsman to repair/rebuild but going to go with a dynamic motor frame and leave the brass tubing frame for front (it appears solid enough) Going to maintain the bevel gears and put fresh new tires on rear. Then go with a Stock type body for drag racing. See photos below. The motor spins up very nicely (maybe a 6v arm?)

Yep, that looks like a DC70 - the brush setup is very typical. I mostly remember red wire on that, but possible that some of the earlier and/or 12V versions had green wire. Will have to check later...

This one is just finished up, ready to go in a rail. I maybe should have done a little more trimming, but I need to start testing stuff.

Beautiful motor, David!

Love the hardware choices, are the lam spacers Slick 7 axle bushings? Very cool.

It's almost time to rock the padlocks :dance4:
