If you are convinced of the "need" for social media, read the book The Accidental Billionaires and/or watch a video entitled "Terms and Conditions". Social media is big business and it does not exist to provide a service for you. You may also watch the 60 Minutes segments related to Data Brokers if you find the topic interesting. As Rick says, it is almost a requirement for business these days, but it is not a positive thing in many cases.

FB should have an icon you can press to filter out any political posts.

No, it certainly isn't. If I were an advertiser, I would appreciate the system as a selected and direct line to the pocketbooks of potential customers. As a consumer, I mistrust this form of marketing having seen the lengths to which many corporations go to distort it. Marketing is a necessity as well as a social plague. There's no reason to think the latest version thereof would be any different.
And I REALLY hated the invitation to 'follow' Mark Zuckerberg.
