The mod class allows for a sidewinder pod.

The anglewinder pod is by design to fit a long can. The short can, that is specified, can be made to work in the anglewinder pod.
I don't know if one pod layout has an advantage over the other.

If anyone wants to run a car out of spec, that would be okay. But to be fair to those racing for points, you will only gain last place points.

For this initial foray, the mod class will allow the sidewinder pod. Future series may allow additional mods, if enough racers wants them.
We race to win, but since only one racer wins, every racer should at least have some fun. And "I will beat you next time ", lol!

September race is on a wood home track.
October race on a 145' plastic track, with long straights.


And may run again on the flat track at BPR in November.

Everything is set for Sunday. BPR will be open at 11am and the flat track will be cleaned.

I ran some laps on the track after the retro race and was turning laps of 7.8s with a stock class car on white lane.

 I'm assuming that the stock class cars are going to be running out of speed about 1/2 way down the straight with the stock 9:27 gears. Looking forward to tomorrow.

A very good day at the office today. A small group of us got together and had a fun event.

Thanks to the staff at BPR. Eddie for prepping the flat track, Debbie and Jim for race directing.
In the stock class Craig, Mill, Eddie diced it out. A high quality race between them. Craig sqeeked it out over Mill. Mill had his motor go south in the second to last heat, but was able to hang on to second. Eddie was right there in third. Two laps covered the podium.

Yep, a fun series running these cars on a variety of tracks. Thanks Mike. Hopefully it will grow over time. I want to see some racers trying out tracks they're not familiar with. For me that's part of the fun of this series. There was a world of difference between the Stock and Modified, largely due to the gear ratio changes. Foam tires will turn them into different animals entirely. I'm not so sure that's a road/track I'd want to go down. Maybe in the Mod class.

Foam tires will show the limitations of the plastic chassis and will require additional setup possible including suspension like I use. I'll bring my car down to SoCal though I need to replace my chassis due to some self-inflicted race damage.

I use the faster Flat6 RS in anglewinder. It's not a whole lot faster but seems to have an advantage out of the corners.

Mod race results:

 

The track rubber up during the stock race and we had to chase the prevalent track conditions in mod.

Craig was able to manage it the best and was turning some quick laps. Mill and Eddie had a battle for second, Eddie had more straight line speed and Mill was better in the turns.

Getting the car running smooth was the key here, I kept making adjustments to the pod screws and finally got it smooth by the end of the race, but Craig, Mill and Eddie were long gone and that was the podium.

 

The cars ran well with the spec tire, once the chassis are adjusted right. Craig, Mill, and Eddie were successful at that task (and drove very well!) and they podium in both races.

Chris, Derrick, and I had a debrief at Portillo’s, LOL. We bench race and discussed many subjects. We concluded that we had a fun day and look forward to the next race.

The urethane tires are not that compliant, and it seems I compounded the problem by cutting the tires very small, which I think lower the roll axis too much in relationship to the cg axis. The effect of this is the car was sensitive to track conditions. Adjusting the chassis stiffness via the pod screws, I was able to fine the right stiffness for the car to behave smoothly and put down the power without chattering, but it took me the entire race to figure it out and adjust the chassis right.

 

 

But the podium guys were running very well! and it would have been a challenge even if I had the car right at the start of the mod race.

I ran my motor pod very loose, especially on the mod. 

 

In practice they were tight and the loser I made it the better the car got. 

 

The way my car was setup actually gave it some rear steer.

In our Farrout club, we run very similar urethane tires (Ortmann) in a few classes. We find that gluing and truing them, and finishing them by sanding them with very fine paper (2000 grit) seems to work best. A general rule of thumb is: The looser the body and motor mount, the more grip; the tighter the body and motor mount, the more the car will slide. I'm not sure what was going on with my car in race, since it was much more hooked up in practice. It seemed to have the worst of both worlds: sliding and chattering. I'm sure there's a reason... I just haven't taken the time to look at it yet.

LOL, I was having the same problem, but I couldn't make a go of it like you did, Eddie. you kept it on the track and battled it out with Mill for second, while I was watching you, Mill and Craig driving by me 

 

Mill had the most weight on the car, he used the tungsten Slot.it weights on the motor pod.

As Craig mention, he ran the pod very loose.

I was able to get the car running smooth by adjusting the stiffness between the pod and chassis.

 

Many methods being used here.

I'm going to try adding some weight to the pod and with varying looseness on the pod.

With sponge tires you'll have even more chatter on a high grip track, which is why we use suspension. I set my cars using either springs or magnets to be very soft and use a lot of weight. That gets rid of any chatter.binsldo use the stiffest pod and add sq brass tube for additional stiffness.

With weight and soft springs the car actually squats when you put it on the track. LOL

Races are on the second Sundays, and the host tracks will be open at 11am

and mod class 30 mins after conclusion of stock racing
