Track looks great.

Looks like you guys found some terrific stuff for the wall's.

How stiff is it?

IOW, if you lean on it, does it fold over easy?

Probably not an issue on a 4 lane track, but I was just wondering how suitable it would be for 8 lane tracks where marshals really have to lean across at times to reach cars.

Mike, the walls are 4mm soft rubber, which folds, if you lean too much over them, but its very good for the cars as it absorbs the impact.

It looks just like a track I would want to race at. Nice job on the build! I was impressed with your Retro F1 cars when I first saw them years ago & still am. :)

Really great looking track. Love  the Laguna Seca thing. I knew Mike would like those clear soft walls. That is the way to do it !!

When I look at these tracks and some new routed ones being built in Italy/Spain, I almost feel that we're prisoners of our own history in the US and our tracks and cars have formed a symbiotic relationship that will be difficult if not impossible to break.

Thanks so much for posting and chronicling your progress. If I had a track and program like this in my area, I'm thinkin' that my time spent at commercial venues would be very limited. Just absolutely the way model car racing oughta be.

Do you use numbered lane stickers on the cars to assist the marshals, like the color coded ones in the US.

Cheers

No reason why a commercial raceway could be built along these lines, perhaps with a modular layout that could be reconfigured depending on the season.

Time is closing in on us as we host our Grand Opening Race on saturday, may 7th.

27 drivers (7 from Germany) will participate in the two classes: 1:24 Retro F1 "Danish Style" and a mixed class of DSV (Danish GT) and Classic (pre 1975 Sports cars and Prototypes).

We tried the track first time on April 21th and it was a great experience after 7 month without a track and nearly one year of building. The actual planning and designing began in Sept. 2013 !!

a few more pics of the track and room:

I had brought a wide selection of car to try out :-)  - the Red Ferrari is an old Champion/Mura Group 20 car - perfect for a retro track :-)

Surprisingly the track was suitable for a wide variety of cars - even my 1:32 Vintage Mercedes pre-war F1 car :-) the other 1:32 cars are Slot-it and Fly cars with foam tyres replacing the normal rubber - and the performed ferfect on the track and was great fun to drive - like all the other cars :-)

I have been busy again in our local Fab-Lab open workshop using their laser- and foil cutters to produce prizes for the race as well as the last decoration for the track surroundings:

A little (late) update on our opening race in KMRC.

some facts:
28 drivers - 8 from Germany
26 starters in 1:24 Retro F1
22 starters in the combined DSV Danish Classic GT)/ Classic class 10 in DSV and 12 in Classic.

033.JPG

Vi had a great day with great racing and a lot of talk. After some practice all driver found the track great to drive, so we were a happy bunch from the club :-)

In Retro F1 my head was "overboiled" and I had to stop, but I came back later in the day to win the DSV class with my little NSU :-)

here are some results and some pics - more pics can be found here:

Niels.

This is a fantastic layout. I am thinking of using CAD to develop a design that will be CNC routed. After looking at your track, I would like to model my design after yours. A few questions. How wide are your track sections? I see that lane spacing is 15 cm (nearly 6 inches). Is this constant? Are you gutters a consistent width? If so, how wide? After racing the course a few times are there any features that you would do differently. For example, are any of the turns too tight; straights too long or short, etc?

Thanks and happy racing.

Rich, lane spacing is 11cm and the gutters are between 15 and 17cm wide.

We had an opening race with 28 drivers from Denamrk and Germany and have been racing a few weeks now.

We have only had positive feedback so far and our core club members are just crazy about the layout :-)

DSC_0033.JPG

I have tried all types of 1:32 and 1:24 slotcars in my inventory (incl. a Champion grp20 with Mura B motor) mostly scale type cars and no S16D/JK25 type cars and ALL was great fun to drive :-)

The track is faster than I hoped, but is both fun and demanding to drive. Also the 4 lanes are very different to drive, making things a bit more challenging :-)

The Laguna Seca inspired mid-section with a 30-40cms drop in height is great to drive (and watch).

The lenght of the straights seems fine as does the radius of the curves.

Mayby I am not the one to ask, but I see the happy smiling faces of my club buddies when they drive the track :-)

good luck with your project
