I get the concept, and think it's a cool idea, but like others, kind of miss the point of it. 
 
I think in this case, it's best to lead by example. Build something and start a thread for it, and see if others join the party.

I believe Steve is going to share with us his scratchbuilding the kind of Pro cars he loves (1966 to 1973 or so) and use currently manufactured components instead of hard to find and expensive vintage parts.
 
At least I very much hope he will still share his builds with us.

Well, I believe he wants to try and inspire others to do these kinds of builds as well. It seems pretty clear to me his purpose is to get others involved in appreciating, and then participating in, building a certain type chassis and car, all the way to a finished runner, without letting some difficult to obtain stuff get in the way.  

Retro has a bunch of people fine-tuning their scratchbuilding skills, so it seems like there's a whole pool of people who *could* join in the fun. I'm not sure why others are not sure   what his purpose is here, but hey, I'm just an onlooker!  

Like Rick, I sure hope he builds something along these lines and shares it. Actually, I'm always interested in seeing whatever either one of the builds, onnacownta it's always "academy awards" material.

The fact that the first seven words after his post were

indicates that I wasn't the only one who didn't understand what he was getting at.

All this stupid rules crap aside, Mike Swiss used to run a Manta Ray class back in La Grange. It was the most fun I had  in slot racing for years. The cars were easy to get, there are re-pop bodies available. And there were full fields of racers.

 

Let's think of doing that again.

I'm watching this thread with great interest. I was a fan of the Jail Door cars that were conceived for the Retro series and build several GP cars as well as a pair of sports cars, even ran a race or two with the group.

The cars were fun to build and a real challenge to drive, especially the GP cars as mentioned by Mr. Noose! This thread might be just the thing to get my interest up again in building some cars.

I have locked this topic because it has gone off-course, and is no longer serving its intended purpose.
 
Thanks to John H. and Rick T. for making attempts to get it back on track.  We discussed the possibility of this sort of adverse reaction to this sort of new idea, and predictable as sunrise, here it is.
 
Building new obsolete slot racers for no other reason than the joy of design and construction is a tough sell in our small world dominated by rabid racers, and then twisting the idea around so it becomes a mere esoteric analog pretty clearly seems like nonsense to some.
 
It is gratifying however that most of the respondents either understood or made an honest attempt to understand, but unfortunately there were those who thought it better to carp. 
 
In a few days I will begin topics for vintage-style builds, and hopefully they will be better received.  Initially, I will leave the topics open for comment, but reserve the right to lock them as necessary to protect their integrity.
