I notice the Cox sticker is on the rear fender.
Yeah, the Cox decal seems to be random from many examples we've seen.
Maybe that was optional, to be fitted by the new owner??
Did the RTRs come with a decal sheet?

Steve the rtr's came with stickers applied by a company in Japan. This info from Philippe who visited that plant, The pics in this thread seem to show all the rtr's have the Cox logo on the front except one picture. Now we have something else to watch for variations!

Matt, in all cases we found the (COX) sticker is always on the front fender just above water line. All EXCEPT Steve's car. That seems to be the exception to the rule. Sanda was trying something different that day.

Ok, now here's the question, is this decal placement correct ?
Who ever owned this was really into decals. I put this in my collection.

Thanks Jeff.
At this rate we will find all 400,000.

This one had me confused. The numbers are paper, the driver looks factory painted.
Here is the twist, it is being sold as if it were a kit model with the kit box. Meaning no steering, Lotus wheels and even the Lotus 30 roll bar that came with the kit.
So all I can conclude is somewhere along the way it got a RTR body?

I'm curious to read what the experts will say...especially given (what seems to me to be) a rather high asking price...

I'm certainly no expert, and I agree that it is a high price for a less than pristine car, with modified rear wheel arches.
Not even sure if it's worth 50% of the asking price, not to mention no photo/s of the chassis.
Could be anything under there...

If I remember that auction, I think the box is worth 15-20 and the car maybe $60-$70. $75 for the whole lot is fair.

The auction is still active(see link) but what I was pointing out was not the price but the fact that it had a RTR body in a kit box, wheels and roll bar.

Point taken about the RTR vs. kit box.
Sorry, that was me who started that thread drift: my bad.
Since it's possible I will be acquiring one of these someday, this is a very informative and pertinent discussion...

Found another RTR Lotus. This brings the total to 18 on the door and 15 on the fender.
I was compelled to buy it as it was a BIN. for $25.
The last one I bought had its rear wheel arches trimmed, this one looks better. So I will restore this one instead.
I have the chassis ready and have add on parts too.

Ha! Ha! I wondered who got that one. It was still listed when I saw it and when I clicked on it it said "no longer available". I didn't want it, but I wanted to see how many accessory parts were on it. I'm glad you got it!!
Between me and you we should sort out what we got and what we want to keep, then put together kits from the remaining junk!!!

I find the hardest part to find is the chrome 8 into 2 pipes. Then a usable windshield would be next.
I wonder if you or Brad makes those parts?

This one just popped up. A very clean RTR Cox Lotus, little or no use. As a side note the side numbers are on the fender. Not that I am keeping count any more.

May-I give my humble opinion of a Cox and Lotus fan?
The Team Lotus type 40 cars (2 on 3 ever made) had the number on the rear fender. #5 of A.J. Foyt was not green (forget it, then) although the number was also on the rear fender.
So as many RTR Cox Lotus 40 have their number there, this is what I would choose.
It is not possible to stick the paper number at the exact place where it should be because :
- of the cuts made on the rear fenders (Because Cox started on Bob Challman's Type 30 that had them, before modifying the kit to pretendly allow to make either a "false" type 30 (with the rear spoiler of the 40) or a "false" type 40 (with the rostrum of Bob Challman's Type 30 and apertures on 4 fenders),
- of the shape of the fenders, as some have said. Already difficult for a decal, impossible for paper.
Modeler have solutions, but here we want to respect RTR as they were (with their charm).
As for the number themselves, because #30 was not proposed by Cox, prefer # 1 or #8 (Jim Clark's numbers on a 40). No 40 of the Team Lotus ever had a #5; as said #5 was for A.J. Foyt's car but was of a very different font and color. The picture on the box is a photograph of #1 at the LA Times Grand Prix, with many stickers. #8 had a simpler livery, more close to Cox RTR 40.
In many pictures shown here from eBay sales, I see too many screens and front light covers that were re-glued (with too much glue). The models made by Cox (I had one) had very little glue, fortunately.
Although I prefer to modify the models to make them more accurate (as you may have noticed along the years, something about 12 or 13 years), I would not be against having a beautiful RTR type 40, "in addition" to my still growing Cox llection. The one I had, had no box... And I modified the model.
Have fun, friends!
(About being a Lotus fan, I still have to modify my avatar picture. I no longer have that blue M100, sold 2 or 3 years ago and replaced by a ... Lotus, yes).

Thanks Jean-Michel for your info.
As you may know this all started when I was restoring a RTR Cox Lotus 40 which its paper stickers had fallen off.
So the question started with where did Cox place them from the factory? Once assumed that the numbers only came on the door, we set out to find more evidence.
As we learned the RTR car were sold with numbers on the rear fender and the door. Based on the examples we collectively found.
The tally so far is 18 on the door and 16 on the fender.

But who's counting...?
Posted 24 February 2021 - 05:32 PM
Since I had the fender car NOS in the box, I am doing an un-official count!
We all know there were many variations of all mass produced slot cars. The companies were turning them out as quick as they could and assemblers probably slipped thru lots of minor variations.

This is the way the cars came from Hong Kong. 12 to a box, already sealed in plastic bags with the driver, an axle-nut pair of wrenches and some instructions as well as an order form for a Cox tee shirt.
Over time, the side sticker location changed from side of the car to rear wing.
Cox placed the baggies inside a box printed in Southern California:
Now can we close this silly and beaten to death thread once and for all please?

I only posted the link to the auction (post 142) as it is such a clean example of this RTR model. They do not come up like this very often.
If you do not have one in your collection I feel like this one would be a good choice.
It may well go for $200 plus.
Posted 26 February 2021 - 01:44 PM
I do think that is about as nice and rtr Lotus as I have seen. I would be surprised if it doesn't sell for over $200.
