This past year of 2025,  I've been teaching myself how to create my own vacuforming car molds as well as still learning to build a chassis.

 

My latest project is a prototype.

 

I saw a used 1/24 Diecast Metal Porsche 930 Turbo with the 'tea tray' tail model car and thought this would be a good project for me to learn something.

 

The model (I did not remember to take pictures of it before I started "modifying" the body) was the standard 930 Turbo and as I was analyzing the aesthetics, I realized that I wanted to widen the fender flares, similar to the Porsche 911 RSR race car.

 

I like a widebody car!

 

So, I'd like to share with you some pictures please.

 

I won't go into how I cut all the parts, like the p henolic G10 sheet and the aluminum pieces.

 

You've seen that in my first build some time ago.

 

I originally used 6063 aluminum which is the general type sourced at your local hardware store/Home Depot, etc.

 

I got excited to build this project because I was able to acquire 6061 rounded square tubing for the rear motor bracket and 2024 aluminum angles.

 

The 2024 grade of aluminum is used primarily in the aerospace industry and I wanted to see if there was a difference from the 6061.

 

From my observation - yes! Definitely!

 

This stuff is a challenge to cut and shape; this stuff is hard!!   

 

Fortunately I was able to get it to work for this project.

It took me four attempts of modifying the fender flares and creating molds, then pulling quite a few bodies before I was able to produce something that was what I had in mind.

I'm pleased the way it turned out and it does run and handle well.

Do you have one of the BRM Porsche's that's just been released? I'm curious to see how it compares in size. What wheels are those? Can we see the underside of the chassis also?

The chassis looks great. With the painted body, it makes a nice-looking slot car. What material did you use for the body plastic? What FK motor did you use for the horsepower?

That awesome Ernie and I love that your designs color outside the lines. So what is the track and wheelbase of your 930 body?

A belated "Greetings and welcome to Slotblog!

 

I'm enjoying your chassis build project - thank you for sharing it.

 

Do you have one of the BRM Porsche's that's just been released? I'm curious to see how it compares in size. 

 

I do not own the BRM Porsche 911 RSR and they are gorgeous and nicely detailed cars.

 

My Porsche body measures 7" long and the width at the doors measure 2-5/8" wide.

 

The widest part of the body are the rear fender flares which measure 3-1/4" wide.

 

 

What wheels are those?

 

The rear wheels are Carbon Fiber hubs with wheel inserts I had someone laser cut for me.

 

I had a wheel that I liked the design and I asked the person to replicate it and laser cut on the clear acrylic sheet I had.

For the front axles and retaining nuts, I used a 1/8' aluminum pop rivet and turned down the thickness and diameter of the rivet head.

 

I made axle collars from a couple of old aluminum wheel hubs by turning those down.

 

Finally, I had some rubber grommets sitting around which I decided to use for the front tires and they fit the laser cut acrylic wheel perfectly. 

 

To me, even though they have the groove in the middle of the grommet, when the body is mounted they look like tires, which saved me the time and effort to fabricate front tires.

Can we see the underside of the chassis also?

The two holes originate from the original front wheel bracket mounts that were screwed onto the phenolic plate.

 

I decided to replace the screw on uprights with front wheel uprights fabricated from 6061 aluminum angle.

 

The reason is that the fender flares are very wide and I needed to extend the wheel outward quite a bit to look correct.

 

The screw on uprights were too short.

Hi Bill,

 

What material did you use for the body plastic? What FK motor did you use for the horsepower?

 

I used 0.020" thick PETG plastic sheet.  I initially tried to form the body with Polycarbonate (PC) but PC is a real challenge to form in that thickness, at least for me! ! !  

 

I really admire those people that can form PC successfully!

 

The motor is an FK130, 35K rpm (LOTS of Torque!), has ball bearings with Neo mags and the ideal voltage which it operates is 11 volts.

 

It is used as a 3S Nerf Gun high performance replacement motor.

 

I found it in my collection of motors.

Hi Larry,

 

what is the track and wheelbase of your 930 body?

 

The track width is 3-1/4" with the wheelbase being 3-3/4".

 

I find it fascinating that in 1/24 scale diecast cars, the wheelbase between manufacturers have such a "wide" variance; from less than 4", up to 5". 

 

This is based on the 1/24 scale diecast cars I've owned.

Isn't it nice to be so close to the majority of the aerospace industry! I really miss New Process Gear, Ummm,New Venture Gear, ummmmm,one more try,Magma. My friends who worked there could have almost anything fabricated for me. Wish I could find the braid router bits. They even treated the guide to a liquid nitrogen Process (Gear HaHa) before pressing it in. Not to mention that they titanium nitrated them. Good friends to have!

I boiled my guides in water. That's how RC guys strengthened some of their nylon suspension pieces.

My buddy Rodney, made a comment about the Porsche 930 Turbo having deep dish wheels and how they look better.

 

I realized that I like that look also, so I moved the inserts further in on the rear wheels and to me, that change makes it look a little bit better.
