Terry's a dremel/ hand file MASTER!!! His chassis are artwork for sure--and they WORK well too!! Beautiful in-laid hinges etc--an amazing craftsman!!!

Well Mike, we will see... here is the final itineration for now... additional bracing on nose opens the possibility of tuning fork option in the future ...  

BTW Isn't the z-rail your original idea, with Ray doing the hardware development??? I remember you with respect from wingcar days when your were the team leader & premier driver for Stu.

One of three pretty much alike, #75 Mama Roux.

 

These are 4.0" / .94" for a little more snap than my own 4.15" w/b broughams. All wire is .047" except the .063" rear bale, Duffy bracket & Swiss tongue.

51gr. with front axle.

 

 

Once they're on the track and testing, I might add a hair spring to the bite bar. The longer Gilded Splinters chassis aren't running them and seem none the worse, but one reason I made three is to do side-by-side comparison testing on at least two (& one's getting handed to a friend who may make good use of it). We'll see how it all turns out.

By coincidence, amazingly similar to a Gary Pearce, Dan Green, Jay Horn wire chassis from the late 80's.

On the Z-rail, yes as it's implemented today by 99 % of the Z-rail builders.

 

The inspiration for the first Retro one I built, was the success of the pictured Hot Rod chassis

(still in need of a bracket replacement) I built for a customer to run this big tired, Falcon II powered class,

on my flat track.

 

You were worried about 3-.055" being too flexible. This thing has 3-.047".

 

On the success of that, I built a Retro F1 chassis for the same customer, again with the flat track in mind.

Along with running great there, it turned out to be great on the King, especially after getting some stops

installed. That same 2010 torsion pan design is pretty much what Rick Davis and Bud Bartos use on the current Z-rail,

that they been winning a lot of races with, and subsequently selling a lot of, to Retro racers all over the World.

 

Ray Price was the first to join the Z-Rail band wagon, has built a bunch, with his crowning achievement,

a 3rd place finish with one in Can-Am, behind Howie Ursaner and Ron Hershman, at Sano V.

 

Thanks for making the wingcar reference.

 

Coincidentally, I've recently changed my signature, at the urging of my wife, to promote my

past wingcar accomplishments.

Slight rework on a 2009 chassis I updated earlier this year. The guide length was over .75 IRRA max & slightly tweaked, so now it is a legal .65 & straight.

Think this will be easily replaceable, particularly if I prep a new spare axle as Pablo recommends.

I would go over those joints with more flux and let the solder flow a bit more. It will get rid of the clumpiness. Otherwise nice job!

You do realize that these joints have had all the excess solder accumulated during building ground off...

That is one way of doing it. Another is to use more flux, less solder. Allow the solder to flow, it will prevent the need to grind off excess solder, because there won't be any.

I wonder if some ambitious chassis builder will ever bother to build, an of course illegal, test mule, with 1 pc. flat spring steel rails,

just to see if it these multi-piano wire chassis, mimic a true spring steel railed car.

Yah, but - still not the same, the disparate metals (steel/solder) wouldn't mimic the sawn plate. Too bad. Lots more fun to do this sort of thing and believe we've got a good substitute!

I just wonder if it might, or might be superior.

 

But I don't wonder enough to try it myself.
