I have a scratchbuilt chassis by a Rick Boltizar that I found in Buzz A Rama about 2 years ago. I didnt think anything of it at the time because I am not into scratch built or retro. I have also never heard of that name before or since. So I put it off to the side ...............Then I found box of old race entry forms from 1971 and .......Low and behold there is Rick's name on a bunch as the chassis builder and racer too.

These are some of the names that were on the entry forms racing a Boltizar chassis:

I recall Rick Boltizar & his chassis running at C&C. Coventry, CT in the early 70s. Brandon Kaaren, from Brooklyn, raced there & built several chassis too.

Rick Boltizar placed 5th at the first USRA nats in 1971.

 

Walt LaBree was on the podium in 3rd place at the 1973 nats after Champion Joel Montague and runner-up PDL.  LaBree made the main again at the 1976 Bi-Centennnial nats, coming in 6th place.

i dont think at the time of the race it/they had any official name other than big parma race...i must have made an impression on rick and brandon kaaren

as they both gave me several chassis via mail....i could not use them as none were as fast as i built, but i was sort of anal retentive about my building and wasted much time on say 90 angles exactly lol

 

i used to marvel watching buddy bartos build at the track seeming using 89 or 91 degree angles in his builds

John, do you have any photos of the Kaaren chassis you can share here? I saw one 50 yrs. ago at C&C, but don't recall all the details. Brandon was about 15 then & he build differently than Tony P.

the only pictures i have are pictures jan sent me recently...nothing of cars/chassis..the chassis both rick and Brandon built for me were "different" they were trying new ideas...chassis i built for myself were copies of proven good chassis mostly

Thanks John. I'll go with the details I recall. Last I knew, Brandon had a music shop in Brooklyn.

The "Nationals", of course, have been held every year since the first one in 1971.  For the first three years they were advertised to include "MAR" in the promotions.  MAR ceased publication in 1973, but the national race continued on to this day.  The 1975 nationals race flyer simply designates the "1975 Slot Car National Championship"   While the next few years saw slightly different play of words, the promotional material retained the naming template of the "Nationals".  The "USRA" did not appear in any promotional material for the race until the first reference in the1982 promotional material and has remained ever since.  I am well aware of the additional and recent NASRA national race as well.

 

So yes, those early years of the nationals did indeed include the promotional labeling as the "MAR" nationals.  The nationals have been held annually since 1971.  I have the results of every Group 7 pro main for all of the earliest years, including many photos, race flyers, race reports, lap charts and more.

 

The one year I continue to fill out, is the 1977 race at Monaco in California.  I have the top three names (in order) only.  I have two other names that were in the main, but finishing position unverified.  If ANYONE, has concrete results for that race that can be documented, I would be MOST interested.

Back in the 70s Me Dan Bloodworth and John Wisneski  were team mates .Bloody won the 71 MAR nationals I came in 5 place in the 72 Mar Nationals. John built my car and I believe he built bloodys car. He as a kid was one of the best motor and car builders back in the day.

building the cars is one thing, driving consistently another, at one of these races i saw mike stuebe come from the airport and run practice laps avoiding ALL the crashing cars, lap after lap

it still sticks in my mind...

jim bandes and i picked up PDL from the airport, jim said whats he look like? i said just look for the guy with long sleeve striped shirt with briefcase...sure enough lol
