Just wanted to try something different than what is expected. Opinions welcome   :)

I am thinking main body in black.

It was when I went looking for an alternative to red, I stumbled on this 2023 Alfa F1 livery.

So with the stripes what color is the body?

My bad some day I will learn to read.

I'd go for the style in post #99. More traditional, not so wild as the others. You have put in an enormous amount of effort to keep the car true to prototype. Now I need to figure out what I can build that would come even close.

Black with a red, white, & green stripe, like the first sketch in post #100, would look sharp.

The colors used in any direction will offset the black a bit.

Thanks to all for your input, I had to work on a friends car project today but when I got home I had one more thought in mind.

This one would read green white red from either side.

I thought I would do all 4 views to better show potential. The body color could be dark silver or gun metal or even a grey tone?

I like the stripe design of the very last one.

Thanks guys for all the input. Larry I like that one too, as does my wife who had some input on the design.

Then I went back to the basic stripe down the middle and gave the "doing" some thought.

This design would be one piece of masking tape that continues front to back, I feel like that makes the job simpler, and still has the swoopy look.

Any way thanks again for your help, check it out.

Thanks Dave, I actually went back to the simple stripe you said you liked then just added the shape around the cockpit to add a little something extra.

I just added the color to the nose so it comes down the grill to a point.

These are the possible colors to use. I have been using Tamiya products lately and I have these in stock.

Not sure I have ever used racing white, has anybody out there used it, is it just a bit like antique white which might tone it down a bit?

This Merit project is in no rush status, meaning it is front and center, but I grab a hour here and there when I can.

Then it dawned on me that  I spend some of my time working 1/1 cars and there is a parallel here. You see I have spent a lot of time fitting the Merit motor under the hood, and it is a 1/24 scale Italian motor.

So then I find my self helping a friend, working on a 1/1 Ferrari motor, doing our best to fit under a 914 hood. Life imitates art situation.

If you are interested in seeing some of what I get up to, my friend has a you tube channel and these are projects we collaborate on.

Love the hat Martin ... it looks proper Brit! (as you shove an Italian engine into a German car)

That Tamiya racing white is what I would call cream.....good coverage though unlike the Tamiya Vivid white which in my experience has been terrible due to weak depth of colour and coverage....I sprayed on more which of course was too much and the result was..... too thick on the edges and too thin in the middle areas.

Interesting video. Nice welds, by the way. With all the work going into this, I think I would be tempted to make a clear Lexan engine cover, or at least a clear bubble to show as much as was practicable. I'm interested in seeing how you guys approach the fitment of the rear compartment lid, seeing as it hinges right where the raised plenum is.

I guess my approach would have been easier, but far more expensive. Just buy a 908 engine. They are out there, two passed through BAT since I started browsing that site some five or more years ago. And Porsche did build one, so when I first got my 914/6GT, I seriously thought about it.

Hey. And nice to put a face to the name. Keep us informed on how this project progresses.

Hey Larry, I have relied on a hat more and more as my lack of cover increases over the years.

Its like a regular league of nations on most projects, not sure we are doing much for world peace though.

Thank you John for sharing your experience  with the Tamiya white. If I choose the pure white I will make sure I spray it over white primer.

Dave, thanks for the compliments. We have talked about a clear bubble cover, that's the way I did the Corvair Genie to allow air to the fan.

A fun project for sure, and another great use for vacuum-forming.

While I am enjoying these early angle winder builds from the masters I am enjoying adding more and more detail to the Alfa.

I have to make sure I have all details in before I can start on the paint work.

I tried red plug wires and thought they looked too loud and a bit like that red vine liquorish candy. So I am redoing them in black to tone it down.

The rocker box caps are made from stamped aluminum sheet. Not sure if you can see the hex at the bottom of the spark plugs? Made from the same sheet stock.

Screenshot (1987).png

This is the only pic of the filler cap open I can find, so I will have to project how this was done. Then figure the best way to model it so it opens and shows off the gas cap proper. At least I can see it hinges from the front (big end) not the tail of the teardrop shape.

If anybody has better (more detailed) pics of the cap, please post them. Thanks.

Screenshot (1994).png

BTW the water pipe is now S/S welding rod, and that  the second plug in, has to be removable to get the engine detail off.

By masters, I assume you mean Rick and Steve ... I'm just a newbie with a compulsion to build stuff.

Martin, your attention to detail never fails to astound me ... lovely work!

Thanks Jen that's a great shot of the cap closed, really looking for cap open. But good to have more pics.

I guess I have to do the intake vent too, just in front of the windshield. Best seen here (a 1/12 scale model) with those hook shapes to open the covers.

Not completely sure what I am looking at here, but great close up pic of the gas cap on the real car.

Yes that does help Dave, thanks.

It clearly shows the flap is hinged and mounted to the tank. The release mounted to the body.  I had thought the flap opened up to reveal another gas cap, but now I would say the flap has a rubber cork that seals off the chimmy shaped tube.

The release is nothing more than a spring loaded garden gate sliding latch? If the flap was sprung to open when the latch was pulled backwards it would release and stand vertical while refueling was taking place. Then pressed back down to lock closed. That explains why the flap was safety wired to seal the gas for todays vintage racing rules.

High tech F1 for the time, It was almost 100 year ago.
