Thanks Bob!

I remember the Mike Morrissey "how to" laying on our track's counter for a year or so!

Not doubt a mis-print but I wonder how the Steube Gang advanced a 3 pole motor a 144 degrees? :)

I believe Bill Steube wound some arms with the wires attached to the com tab on the opposite side of the armature.
In other words, instead of soldering the wires directly to the com tab adjacent to a "pole", he soldered the wires to the com tab for one of the other poles. 144 degrees would probably equate to 24 degrees advance.

Keith

I just read the article. I found it refreshing that Morrissey confessed to not really knowing what makes a chassis work, that he considered what makes a chassis handle as "black magic". What he said he does is the same as what Mike Steube does now.... build and build again until you get one that works at the particular track you are running at. No substitute for elbow grease. Oh yeah, elbow grease AND racing against the toughest competition you can find. He intimated that knowing what makes a chassis work or having a great chassis doesn't count for much if you can't drive it. One must test one's mettle in competition, over and over, to have any chance at doing well.

Jairus
I need to ask you a favor where is that commercial raceway up in Oregon that you test your cars?
You see me and Flygirl is taking a road trip to Washington State to visit some of her relatives :shok: and I thought it would be cool
to stop at different Raceways heading up North, nice way to break up the trip. ;)
Anyone that has suggestions it would be appreciated.

I could use a change in pace far as building. I'm not going any faster with what I've been doing, so maybe I can go faster by going slower, if that makes sense.

Retro bodies these days are designed for the 3.125 width. Maybe sqeezing them to 3.0 won't look too funny. I'd like to give it a try. If you stay with 1/8 axles, then you have a couple of points positive for those hate to sleeve crown gears.

If there are still plenty of original TSR motors out there, that would be more in keeping with the era. Falcon 7 and TSR D3's would likely be a handful for handling.

Seems to me that #30 wire was not being used in '66. even in rewinds at least not in small town Pismo Beach. Maybe #32 or #31. For sure there were no such magnets as in the Falcon 7's. A lot more rolling and coasting were the order of the day.

Yessir ,I agree with Mark here (to many horses) if the cars are gunna be overpowered with the FK's,simply buy a 10 foot role of 20 gauge wire and choke em down,Alpha sells a pakage for $6.35.,,,,,,,,,,I don't think over-powering these cars is gunna be fun,so,simply mandate a set number of feet of leadwire so Everybody wont be wall to wall !!!

I've been testing my Jail Door car on both the King and the Flattrack. The car at 110 grams was turning 4.9 to 5.0 sec laps consistantly with no deslots on the King. I added weight, to the drop arm only, bringing the car's weight up to 130 grams. It was turning 5.5 to 5.6 sec. lap times consistantly with no deslots on it's own. Driver error caused the deslots. I understand your concern with the power issue. I suggest you build a car and drive it, tune it and then discuss what should be done. I didn't know what an old jail door car could do until I started playing with one. And neither do you guys. :D Tell everybody what you know, not what you think. :D It's the best way to help the program along and to stop rumors from spreading around. :laugh2: Thanks for your interest in the program. :)

Hi Mike. Intrique is the fuel of SlotBlog!

I guess from the lap times that the corners are painfully slow. Seems likes its hurry up and get to the corners. Have you tried the Kingleman yet?

Once I get the car geared and tuned right I expect 4.7 to 4.8 on the King and 5.2 to 5.3 on the Flatster. Not to bad for a 43 year old design with covered wagon size wheels. :laugh2:

That might translate into 5.0's for me and Mike B on the King , but practice makes perfect. It helps to have natural talent too. :)

Okay, back to the cars.... I have a question. Since I have always been driving my TSRF and FK motors with a digital controller.... what OHM resistor will work best if run with an analog controller? Reason I ask is I have a neat MRC thumb controller here loaded with a 7.5 ohm. However, I also have a couple of 2.5 ohm resistors that can be dropped into the controller if that works better.
Ideas?

I have noticed the Jail Door cars are morphing into something that was not implied in the beginning of this thread. What's it going to be? 3 rail, 4 rail, 5 rail, half rails, etc. Will it be a proxy race? You have to remember, not everyone lives on the left coast...................

Morphing is not inevitable, only if its going to be permitted. Originally it was stated 1966 and early 1967, but half rail chassis have been given kudos. I am confused on what direction to take. IMO, the rules should state amount of rails permitted, including half rails, yes or no. I know it's difficult to unlearn what happened after early 1967.

I built a Billy Steube copy and was told it was not "in the spirit" of the time frame?.......

Jairus,

I have my old Parma Turbo from the 70's. I installed a 3 Ohm resistor so that I can use it as a backup D3 controller. I'll make it a point to try this out the next time I go to the track.

I think you will need a 4ohm at least for the flatser track with a TSR CanAm Ron but what the heck try it and let us know as I was going to do it as well for backup.
