I just remove the front section of the chassis and maybe the motor brushes, then put the magnet between the plates of the zapper and buzz away!!

Looks great, if you have not done so yet may I suggest a coat of clear over the decals. Half of them would probably be gone when you got the car back

Very cool super clean car, Don.
Should go pretty good, looks very lightweight. Maybe space the guide flag so it doesn't run on the fronts ... or just barely touch.

Joe, please note that great care is taken in handling of the cars. Some really fragile model body cars and trucks were entered last year.
Clear over decals looks great and never hurts ... unless it causes the paint to wrinkle ... I just 'totaled' a finished body paint job yesterday doing that ...

Yep, I was definitely planning a clear coat Joe, but hesitated because 1) I've never actually done that! and 2) what Bob said... on the other hand, the body isn't painted, but hope it doesn't wrinkle the decals!

Paul, I wish I had more of those. That is the only set I have ever seen, they were part of a Kemtron "kit" and I got them on Ebay somewhere many years ago...so I was determined to try them. I think the brushes are Ram 196-size. I probably should have used ball bearings, but I didn't. The motor seems very sensitive to timing and is getting gradually broken in, maybe back in the roadster tomorrow if I can fit a suitable gear.

The bottom plate almost looks like the one from either the Mustang or Bronco X503 based motors without the branding/casting marks...
Sure looks one quality motor David, great job

What a cool looking Kemtron, David!
I've been using Marklin wire.
This wire is used by the model railroading crowd for wiring tracks. Many colors are available
I believe this is the same stuff used in the 60's, comes in 33 foot boxes and 24.3 AWG, readily available on eBay and from RR suppliers.

Yikes, that really is a lovely Kemtron! VERY nice work David!

Yeah, that's what I've seen also. I imagine that's because each com segment is only 1/5 (72 degrees) of the total. Are the brushes the same or close to the same size as the originals? Wider brushes mean more overlap.

David's using wide RAM square brushes whereas the originals are narrow cylindrical ones..

Too much overlap can lead to stalled starts and overheating. May need to take a corner off the trailing edge to reduce the problem without reducing the timing - something we have found on the newer FK proslot motors.

Don, I've had good success using Minwax fast drying Polyurethane clear gloss over decals. Spray on a lite tack coat wait 15 minutes +or- and then spray a wet gloss coat. Of course with anything untested try it on a sample piece first.

The motor runs ice-cube cold and has no starting issues, so I doubt that overlap is an issue, it is a pretty large comm. I think John hit it on the head in that the comm dwell is less due to being a 5-pole. I just want to make sure that it is somewhat directional and running in that direction. Also, I always thought that maybe the weakness of the KTM design was the pencil-lead brushes and fragile springs. The brushes would seem to wear fast, carry little current and are a bitch to find when they shoot across the room, However, the motor may be the biggest sleeper ever, particularly on lower voltages.

Was wondering about trying to customize the brush gear on the Kemtron motors due to the very reasons you mention David But time and parts available mean the H-Power armed Kemtrons will go into competition with the standard bits for the moment , with a view for future mods later on . Can't wait to see what that motor does down the strip

Anyone needing (wanting) some Kemtrons !!
...and only a few miles away! Why don't I ever find this stuff? Maybe if I started hitting garage sales. That looks like a vintage box, too. BTW, here is the endbell "documentation" that I had.

Wow, that is a first for me. I did not know Kemtron made aluminum endplates. Outstanding motor ...
