Oh heck yes on assembling those retros (or even real ones) . Getting those end pieces aligned up with axles and gear is a patient testing process !

What is that saying...."everything old is new again"......or something. Check out Rodney's vintage rail he ran in the West Coast drag proxy race. Below is a link to the thread with the build. It's in post #1:
Kinda, sorta the same idea. Maybe the frame could take the place of the spacers Bob?????
Anywho, your rail is looking great Bob.......Onward

That's a pretty neat idea, Bob.
I took 2 plates out for the right side rail and 4 out of the left.
The magnet is full width and the arm now 'floats' perfectly with the difference toward the com side.
The mag lams width is one mag lam wider than the arm lam stack width, 1/2 of a mag lam width on each side in 'float' mode.
It narrowed up the rail spacing making the RGeo drop arm unusable ... but that's OK because I made it 'unusable' first when I broke one of the tabs off. I usually don't do that stuff any more.

Yup .. and thanks!
BTW: All great pieces in Rodney's arsenal. Are any plates removed on the 857 in the magwinder?

Maybe we could talk to Rick B about a new version which essentially would join the front and rear sections at the correct length and have slotted holes for the lam screws. It could also be available with a "blank area" where the motor shaft goes. You could open up a hole for the arm and build it like Rodney's and Bob's (narrow) or only put a bearing hole, use all-thread and build a true magwinder (wide). Maybe???

With just slots for the lam screws so you could move the motor backwards & forwards for different sized spurs & motors .
Sure would making it all line up a bit easier!

Found a little time to work on the rail today. Here is how it looks as of today.
Here is the final drive setup. I still have to do the final clean up. I replaced the 5-40 axle with a stainless steel non threaded type with flats. I did this to go with Weldun 64's instead of the standard 48's. This allowed me to lower the ratio from 2:66-1 to 3:21-1. I feel this is much more realistic with those big rear meats. I made a couple of spacers from aluminum tube and filed a flat for the spur screw. I think I may add another screw to the spur. I also had to solder the pinion on after modding it to fit. You really don't have a lot of options here due to the design. I think I am treading on new ground here as I have never seen any of these motors modded in any way.
Here is the modded front end. I going with an industrial look here. Aluminum bearings added, brackets removed and front reshaped. I also made spacers here and added some small size jam nuts.

Bob ... You can run those magnets in the Unlimited class ...
Wow, wow holy cow. .. put those Kryptoplates in the zapper and you can save the world from .....
I think we all need to understand magnetism better.
This should help get us started.

Bob, I think we share the same disease of a mind that never shuts off
Well, the rail made a 20 foot test run at home under its own power today. Seems to scoot along pretty good.
Here is my daily question. Since I will be down on torque compared to the big boys I figured the easiest way to go fast is to go light. I weighed the completed rail and came up with 4.4 ounces or 125 grams without a body which I think is super light compared to an Eliminator for instance. I was wondering if anybody else went on the scales and what did you you come up with?

Joe, that might be a good plan. G Bob, that looks pretty cool too. I guess back in the day they uses a ring magnet of some sort in the Associated car???

Hey Joe,
I just weighed my 2 rails.
My Pittman powered K&B re pop is a staggering 216 grams.
The smaller KTM Fiat rail is around 170.
Your rail should have a nice advantage in the weight department.

Well I just got snookered ! I was bidding on Epay on a set of Simco spring/brushes listed that would work on padlock type motors, Was the only bidder up till noonish at $9.99 , just checked and it's GONE ! period , no notice of canceled item etc, not in my "didnt win" box and so on just flat GONE!
Im not new to epay so this is really odd! especially with no notice of any kind on it. I know there is a "EBAY" section here but discussion of motors and tune ups here is what made we want to try and snag a set to try! ( No I didnt copy the Item # on it, who does?)
Ok, rant over, back to our regular programming
Ok really weirder ! It finally showed up "LATE" as I won it, first time it has gone like that, (rant over)
