Why did slot car racing fade so quickly in 1967-68?

in their Ties and Jackets the exude an air of Professionalism
and Sportsmanship. it's a formality that excludes Rudeness
and Bad Behavior While saying this is good Clean Fun

Personally, I don't remember any correlation between how one was dressed and how one behaved, and I worked at a slot track in 1967 and 1968, then raced again in 74-75.
Rickard, assuming you're not kidding, were you actually around in the 60s?

Hmmm...the tennis boom started around 1973...about the time slot racing started to disappear into the ozone.
Bob, the only person I ever knew to mix tennis & slot racing was John Cauthin on OWH. No longer on the slot boards, he must have settled on tennis.
I intend to live forever! So far, so good.

A very large number of enthusiast were young boys. DO any of you remember when you turned 16 and got a drivers license?? You were comsumed with buying a car and fixing it up etc etc etc, and then along came the girls too. Go check out most garages today that has a son turn 16 and you'll probably find a real expensive BMX bike with all the doodads laying there idle. LOL Same thing in the 60's, get a car and slot cars and box go direct to the attic.
.......and if they made it past 16 and were still interested in slotcars, when they turned 18 they got sent off to Vietnam.

If I may Make a Guess as to what killed Slot Car Racing in the 1960's was the Escalation in Vietnam by President Lyndon Johnson and Robert McNamara all the young kids going in to combat as Children Playing with Toys and coming back, as messed up Men who have seen the World, Death and $5 "Women of Nonnegotiable Affections". and when they came home they had no time for Models or to pass the hobby on to the next generation.
OR it could be those Dang Hippies and their Long Hair. Their minds too drug addled to make it around a single turn much less a full race. then that long hair was a hazard in the dremel and in gears
I Rather like the like the second thought all bad things can be traced back to hippies
Mr. Price .... if you look back at my first post you'll notice it was the true and correct Answer, I may have been Quite young in the spring of 75, but after the fall Saigon, and to this DAY You could/can always tell the young men that lost their love for fun in that Horrible war. they were the ones with the look of seriousness in their eyes, it was no longer fun but a serious competition, They were just there because their VA Councillor told them it would help , not just to have fun. and by the 80's Slot Car Tracks around the country became bastions of pot smoking Hippies Just like this Guy:
Randall the First cover Guy for SARN Latter Died of a Heroin over dose, Randall Was a Good Guy, and I worked with him in Collage, but Quit frankly, with the influx of Hippies durring the late 60's-70's by the time I was in Jr. High, The best place to score a bag or find a "Friend" to get you a bottle.
SO YEA I STAND by my ASSERTION that Vietnam, Hippies, and the loss of ties and Jackets that caused Slot Car Racing to fade
And Mr. Price there are Over 58,044 Men who are envious of your "High Number"

As far as the suit and tie thing, check out the photos of Joel and the "boys" at the big races, they were wearing the fashions of their time, long hair, paisley, striped pants etc. That was the "in" thing. Most are still racing today and pretty upstanding citizens and I don't think they are passing judgement on the fashion statement of todays youth?
Everything in the 60's was moving at light speed, many things came and went, slot car mania along with it. But the 70's the 5500 tracks had dropped drastically and the most of them either went full line hobby or folded up. No one reason for it, just how it was. Like CB radios of the 70's, that was HUGE and then fell off greaty.
Live and let live and be thankful there are still some people around to have a facility to go play in. In a country of a couple hundred million people and we have like 250 slot car places, tells a lot of how it is.......................

I do not need the likes of YOU to tell me what My friends and all those that died, did for this country....
I do not see many folks siding with your views........According to your profile, you were born November 13, 1967....WTF do you know about the 60's and 70's ...........I think you are Wrong about Hippies, Vietnam and not wearing ties to race slotcars as the downfall of the hobby...........My opinion...........entitled to it
