Sweet looking car, Jairus!

Spent most of today building up this brass rod chassis for the Chaparral II.
The driver figure is molded into the Dubro body and I decided to detail that instead of cutting it out. The reason is is to demonstrate the correct way to detail paint one of these interiors for the maximum effect.
But I am getting ahead of myself.
Drop arm is next!

I finally have a finished chassis for the Dubro Chaparral II. Wish I could work on these cars full time... but other duties do interrupt the progress.
Rather than using all hard bronze rod for this one, I made it a mix of both soft brass and bronze rod taking advantage of the properties of each to best use.
Drop arm weight courtesy of Pablo, motor-bracket from PCH.
Now, guess it's time for paint and detailing.

Swoopy swoopy. Interesting curves on both chassis and body. As a chassis/body package it has very nice visual impact.

Okay, got an interior plate made up for this body. Snugs right up under the cast in place tub with driver figure. At this point the interior plate and only the driver would receive paint, leaving the clear tub. But the more I think about it.... the more I want to cut the driver loose like normal.
Besides, the new decals from SpotModel.com should be shown off to best effect. Right?

Nice decal sheet.
Looks like it could be a cartridge player, bottom row, 2nd from left.

Thank you Régis! Coming from you, that is high praise indeed.
Okay, finished another one.
This car is a Chaparral II painted to replicate Roger Penske's ride to 2nd place at Meadowdale in 1964 Can-Am season.
No, it's not perfect. But I am getting better....
Flaws are that I put the number round on the left side too far forward. I matched the right side and that was not correct for the real car... but that info was discovered too late.
Oh well.
The other flaw is the old plastic which has begun to turn. This is a vintage Dubro body clearly (pun intended) 45 to 50 years old due to the yellowing.
No matter how much I polished the exterior with Meguiar's polish.. or sanded the inside. The yellowing on parts of the body are still apparent.
The new dash decals look beautiful! Good thing I picked up two sets. And Steve is correct, that there is both a Cassette and an 8-track player faces printed.
Very excited thinking about how to use that 8-track decal.
Here you can see the orange/yellow that spoils the look of the car. Broke my heart, because I couldn't see that until I added the white. Even after polishing and scrubbing the white off.... sanding and re-spraying.
It is just the nature of old plastic.
Almost wish I had the ability to back pour and cast new bodies.
But..... that's they way life is.
You change what you can and don't worry about those things that are out of your control.
Corvette is next.
Stay tuned... B)

I think she's a beauty Jairus.
Painting 50 year old butyrate plastic white on the inside (as they mostly were in the period) is not easy. Often the plastic has yellowed. I think it gives the build some character and shows it's no repop.

Has anybody tried the "put it by a brightly sunlit window for a week" trick that was rumored to make them clearer ?
But I do agree with cd-65x, it looks fantastic and I can't even see any yellow.
8 Track tape deck ? That is a first for the vintage industry You can listen to 2 songs at the same time

I counted at least 7 radio or tape and 1 cd players and then some what looks like push button station changers. that dash decal sheet covers about any dash you would want to display. Pretty cool. Really a great piece Jairus.

Been more than a month since any updates. Had to put this project aside and get the magazine off the ground.
But... finally got started on the next car. This one a 1964 Corvette Stingray painted like the customers personal car!
I figure this one will be driven more than the others so I went with a very drivable chassis rather than pure retro. Good flex, a strong motor choice and bearing cups for ball bearings.
Still lots to do, including get this off the jig and under some hot water before the flux ruins the bronze and steel parts.
Later I'll install a bite bar and some pin tubes to round out the running gear.
The coined tongue is courtesy of R-Geo! (Thanks Rick )
The body is the key and I am working on a scratch built interior that will be sweet!

Update: Finally got the chassis done. This one should be easy to drive and handle well depending on the track, surface, tires, time of day, controller.....
But it looks good, and that's all that matters.
Body mounted and movement is perfect. Russkit wheels fit perfect with 15/16" inch fronts and 1" rear.
Time to build up the interior plate.

Scratch built interior using styrene sheet and rod.
Drivers head is Russkit and arms and shoulders Cox.
Ordered a set of "Washburn Chevrolet" decals for the body, but think I can begin painting before they get here.
I didn't have a model kit of a '64 Corvette for the dash handy so whipped up this. It's not exact, but once painted flat black and detailed it should be passable.

Interior painted, time to move onto masking the body.
The interior is painted in a mix of flat, gloss and semi gloss paint to give the illusion of depth. But.... once inside the body most of that will be hidden behind the thick windows.

While the Corvette is now painted and sporting vintage Fred Cady decals. I remain short one front bumper. Searched all my model car parts to no glory.... so I'm watching a parted out model kit on ebay that still has the front bumper on the chrome tree.
Till then, I started work on the Lister Jag.
Got the center section done and interior fitted.
Motor for this is an FK type, bracket and tongue were provided by R-Geo.
Time to make the ISO pans!
