At first I spray glued the entire track surface Mike. All that naphtha would really stink and with the track is in my living-room/dining-room that didn't work out well.

 

What did was the glue dot method on just the driving line. Since I'm the only one around here that builds and runs vintage cars, I only have to glue one lane.........

I finally got my act together and got color on. Lots of little boo-boos but I hope to get them all covered up with the detailing:

Hi, Pablo... yup enamel on butyrate.

 

The body was lightly scuffed with a ScotchBrite pad, washed with Dawn and warm water. Then masked with PTFE (Teflon) film tape that absolutely won't allow paint bleed through when properly burnished down.

 

Now, if I could just find a paint brush that doesn't shake for the detailing...

 You could try adding lead or brass weights to the handle.

Don't laugh, Bill's idea is actually a good one. I write steadier with a pen that's weighted on top, why not a paintbrush? Next time I paint an interior, I'll try it.

What is the Teflon tape you used?

The tape is 3M #5480 PTFE Skived Film 1" wide X 3.7 mil thick. I lay a piece on the back of a tech block and cut it into many narrow strips. It bends around corners pretty well and really lays into depressions and over panel lines.
 
It's also crazy expensive. I bought my roll at least 10 years ago and I'm still using it. I reserve it for the important things like windows and stripes.

No wonder you use it for special jobs/occasions. You weren't kidding it being worth a king's ransom.

Worth it though, if it conforms to the contours right and doesn't let any bleed through.

If you burnish down the edges of the tape you will get razor sharp results with zero bleed through... and I need all the help I can get when it comes to this painting stuff!

Have you ever tried any of the liquid masking materials?

No, I haven't, Bill. I thought it would involve using my shaky paint brushes to apply them??? Although using them in the hard-to-mask headlight areas might be the ticket. Do you have one you like?

I like the Bob Dively liquid masking film. If you have a steady hand, you could cut designs into it, or trim around windows, using a sharp X-Acto knife or scalpel.

Thanks, Bill... the "steady hand" part is a worry! But I'd like to give it a try using a brush in really hard to reach areas.

 

Back to this build. I'm making progress. The various components are almost ready to come together:

Next up is my best attempt at one of the most iconic helmet designs in history:

 

 

What I didn't realize is the Cox driver's head I'm using is misshapen.   I've used dozens of them and never noticed it until now.

 

The helmet is almost flat above the visor. The helmet should raise up above the visor and provide somewhere to put the front stripes onto.

 

The Cox head is all finished except for the stripes so I'm going with it...
