.......The nose pieces look great........but the Checkpoint Cup 2014?......there is enough time to build & test 25+ chassis in that amount of time.......You guys that have a "Real Life" just don't have time for the really important things in life,,,,,like building slot car chassis!....LOL.............Take care Craig,,see you in a month or 2............................DC

Yes Sir, I've limited myself to only racing the major events in 1/24th scale so yes, the next race for me will be the Checkpoint Cup. Now on the other side of the coin.....I will be racing a few 1/32 proxy races with plastic cars along with the Big Shot HO Shootout and additionally, some club HO races. In the interim, building two new Can-Am chassis, three RetroPro and a couple new F1's.

Craig, Beautiful work! What did you use to cut the nose pieces out?

Craig, Beautiful work! What did you use to cut the nose pieces out?
A dremel and a file along with a pair of pliers to make it flat.

How did you ensure that the front axle holes are drilled such that the axle will be parallel with the block/jig/track?

Craig,
I have made my own front sections before. That is a lot of work and looks like you did a great job on it. I now cut up kit chassis plates to make the fronts.
I hope your chassis works like the ones that I have built. They are simple to build and work very well.
Keep up the good work.

Richard,
A simple piece of aluminum "L" channel works great to insure the front axle holes are in the correct position. It makes a fixture to position the nosepiece perfectly square. Put the holes in AFTER bending the front axle struts. Use a pair of calipers to scribe horizontal and vertical layout lines of wherever you want the holes to be using the aluminum as a stop. Use an automatic centerpunch to carefully locate the center and use a small hand hole punch to make the 3/32nds hole. A cheapo hole punch works better than drilling and is much easier.
I put axle holes in motor brackets in much the same manner..........after bending.

I kinda see what you're saying, Bryan. In truth, as long as the front axle is going to be soldered into the uprights, the holes can be a little "off" and then wallowed out as needed as long as proper jig wheels are used to arrive at the final position. I'm not at the point of attempting this just yet(maybe another year or two), but it never hurts to work this out in the head ahead of time.

Craig,
any chance seeing your hole puncher in a pic? I'm not sure what it looks like

I always thought "wallowed" was something that hogs did in the mud.

Then I got off my *** and went down to the shop and built a couple of CanAm cars myself.
The first one is a JK X25R, which is pretty close to my original, but with reinforcement around the front wing and the pans itself.

That's some heavy-duty MA(mechanical advantage). Can you swap out the piece that actually punches the hole, so you can punch different diameters?

Just got a new F1 in the mail this week. Thank you to Dennis!!!
Jeff, you can't go wrong with that one.
Dennis sent me a 3rd Samson Classic F1 chassis this week as well. He made a couple custom tweaks in this last one, I can't wait for the Sano!

Craig,
EXACTLY the same. The dies with the Roper Whitney set are from 3/32 to 9/32. I also have a Harbor Freight version that works OK also. About $20.

Ohh-Kayy then, descending from "Simple yet obviously effective" to....
This is Duffy #81, "ChernOval" 4.5" Stocker. Built for Shakey George Blaha & based on his sketches & our conversation over some ideas he wants to try out, executed by Duf and yes I did choose my words carefully there.
Mostly .047" wire and .04" brass 'cept .05" in the bracket, just 61 grams as it sits incl. axle so there'll be some opportunity to paint it with lead during testing.
I think the upperclassmen were wrong. Most may look the same, some - don't.
We'll have this out at OCR this weekend. There may be a followup to this story, keep fingers crossed.
