Thanks Alan, but I found a small 1/8" shaft flag that will work fine

Sam, if you find some stretchy STP jammies like that, please snag me a pair :dance3:

Don, your photos were more helpful than you know :good:

What are the wheel widths, track widths, GL, WB, etc. on your car, please?

Are the wheels all same width?

Pablo,

Wheels are all 3/8" wide, 3/4" diameter in the front and 13/ 16" in the rear.

Rear track, outside to outside is 2-5/16", front 2-1/4"

Guide lead about 9/16" and wheelbase just a tad under 3", about 2-15/16"

Hope that helps.

Don

1/8 oilite will reduce the WRP tongue hole.

I prepped it like this and Loctited it to the 1/8 dummy axle.

Set the keeper so the axle end is where I want the trimming to stop.

Once sparks fly off the Dremel wheel while the axle spins in my drill, you're there

IMG_9292.JPG

Perfectly flush side will go on the flag deck and the raised edge (not shown) will meet the weight.

I'll solder it home after the tongue is placed so as not to keep melting the joint

Got the Paul Gage urethanes, very sweet. They slip fit onto the JK .470 OD hubs perfectly snug.

No glue needed. Now all I have to do is narrow and grind 'em.

IMG_9303.JPG

I have questions for you "scale guys", if I may ask:

-what size OD and widths were the wheels on the original 1/1 race car?

-all four same widths and OD's, or different?

-if I divide those dimensions by 32, will it be the correct size for my car?

Assuming the forefathers of F1 1/24 retro racing got the scale facts correct, my math says:

Rears, .8 OD and .8 width X 24 = real car 19.2 OD and 19.2 width.

Fronts, .75 OD and .375 width X 24 = real car 18 OD and 9 width.

I'm thinking all four wheels on my car about .600 OD and .500 width.

What say ye, please? :)

All four tires the same size should look okay.

From my limited experience using urethanes, if they're not glued to the hubs, the tires are eventually going to move around & come off the rims, regardless how tight they may seem initially. This has been with H&R Hawk (18K rpm's) motors on 10 volts. Paul Gage recommends using a certain brand of clear nail hardener for gluing his urethanes.. Locally, I've seen this nail hardener sold at Walmart, Target, & grocery stores. IC-2000 CA will also work.

I use Uhu CA glue for gluing urethanes or rubber tires. There are others from cheap to expensive.

That width dimension of:

.500 width.

should be about right.

It says 16" Halibrand mag wheels - is that the OD of the wheels, or the wheels with tires installed?

Article says the actual car had:

Clearance 3"

WB 96.2"

Track front and rear 60"

Overall length: 150"

Height 25"

From the drawing, I'm guessing all four wheel widths to be about 12"

Here is the math, all divided by 32:

Clearance .093" (makes sense, although I'll make mine less)

WB 3.0" (yup)

Track 1.875" (doesn't make any sense) (help, Mr. Wizard)

Length 4.69" (yup)

Height .781" (yup)

Tire widths, based on my guess, .375" (seems a little narrow)

My biggest question is "Track" - how was that measured on the real cars?

And, what does a 16" wheel mean - total OD, or is that the OD of just the wheel?

Track was measured from center to center of the tires.

My guess is the 16 inch is wheel diameter based on the scale drawing and the way tires were specified in the late 60's.

As far as I know Pablo the 16" refers to the diameter of the rim/wheel.

As an example vw bug rims are 15", I grabbed some wide alloys.. the tire size was 195/50/15. The 195 was the width, 50 being the tire wall/low profile and 15 being the 15" size of the wheel.

Build on! :D

Hi Pablo,

The wheel size (16" in this case) refers to the diameter of the tire mounting surface of the wheel and the inside diameter of the tire measured across the tires mounting bead. The overall diameter of the wheel is actually about 1 1/2" larger.

A 16" wheel would be about 17 1/2" in diameter. This can be confirmed by grabbing a tape measure and measuring your family cars wheel diameter.

My Mustang has 18" wheels and the "tale of the tape" reads 19 1/2".

Thank you all very much, gentlemen :) Your input leads me to a final decision:

All four wheels same size - .550" OD X .400" widths.

Track (outside to outside) will be as originally planned - 2.5"

Does your Hudy tire truer have a diamond coated drum? Compared to sponge, urethanes are miserable to cut.

Sorry Bill....

Compared to sponge, urethanes are miserable to cut.

Probably so but not as difficult as you might think.  Cutting? is that narrowing or reducing diameter?

Urethanes are good to work with compared to silicones....clean drum and a new blade in the scalpel.

Urethanes are not difficult to trim on a Hudy, and a diamond drum isn't necessary. I do it all the time.

Well. I'm glad it's you & not me that has to cut those urethanes down. :laugh2:  You probably also could have gotten Paul Gage to make you a set of custom sized urethanes for your application. Then they would have only needed mounting & truing.
