The Gulf get annual hurricanes just like CA gets annual forest fires. The big difference is man can't control where the hurricanes go. New England had hurricane Henri last week, our first in 30 yrs.

For a professional mariner, every day is a hurricane. For me, this is business as usual. All bragging aside I am watching the situation like a hawk.

Hey Pablo:

Amite City appears to be right in the path of Ida as it moves north bringing tons of rain and some pretty heavy wind, I'd keep on heading north on I-55, but hey that's just my experienced $.02 (I grew up in Florida) !  If not I hope you've got a pretty solid place to hunker down there.  Keep us informed as possible.

You are right, Jay, it is going to be nasty here tonight. 50 mph winds and 100% chance of heavy rain.

The advantage over Pass Christian is, here I'm not 200 feet from a bayou and my car won't get flooded. And I'm in a good old solid brick house. Lots of booze and food   :clapping:

Paul says "I'm in a good old solid brick house. Lots of booze and food".

Maybe you ought to make a permanent move......booze.....food....add some hot and cold running women and you would have it made.  I guess that's not politically correct.   Well, I'm not politically correct anyway.

Evacuation can be as much hard work as staying put. We are home now safe and sound, no flooding, no damage, power stayed on. "Hindsight is 20/20, that's why they don't make glasses to fit your butt" (Craig Landry - Zap) (RIP)

Motor assembly - piece of cake. Pre-radiused brushes, custom springs, perfect arm spacing, it all came together nice

IMG_0241.JPG

Testing - 100% success. Break in, she runs cool and smooth, draws 1 amp at 3 volts. At 5 volts the amps dropped to .9 amps. That tells me the motor is really happy. After a short rest and re-oil, I fed 'er some volts. This is a screamer 26D

I too intepret a drop in amperage with a increase in voltage as a good sign. But only a few of my motors do this. But when it does it always makes me happy. My 6001BB does this all the way from 0-8V (farthest I pushed it on the dyno) and it is a happy motor.

It actually ran cooler at 5V than 2V. This will be a good powerplant for this car. It's not too wild but it's sure got the beans. Straight steel 8T pinion installed, 1/4 oz. iron "Team Associated" weight JB Welded to the drop arm. After I trim the outrigger ends, time for an SOS/baking soda chassis scrub followed by a tumble

Thanks gentlemen  :hi:

Motor snugged up tight then power supply re-tested to ensure nothing got tweaked. Still draws about 1 amp at 5 volts, so test complete and successful  :yes3:

Koford short big head pins bent, axles trimmed with zero excess meat, flag and wires installed (one Chi-Town .032 brass spacer under), rear Cox donuts final trimmed a little fat to allow for testing wear

IMG_0252.JPG

20 gauge TQ wires done. Very tricky to "train" them not to fall into the big spaces between the outriggers and potentially drag the track

Slow but sure progress, Body is trimmed and pinned (except for the cockpit cutout - I'll probably let Noose do that).  Edges and wheel wells sanded with 400 then 2,000 grit.

One glitch is, I planned the front tube for 3.0" wheel width. It looked proper at the time  :pardon: but I misjudged the curves of the body. New front wheel width is now 2 3/4", requiring a .125" tube reduction on each side. Easy fix, I taped the motor off and re-installed the roller on the jig to hold it down for surgery

Slicing .125" off each tube end is easy. Making the ends perfectly concentric again without removing the tube would be difficult without a gizmo Capt. Rick showed me years ago - a "reverse counterbore".

Hook a poor man's lathe to the other end(s), spin the tool, and bingo

IMG_0256.JPG

Little bit of polish on a Q-tip, and I'm back in business  :dance3:

Yup, I love a tool that corrects mistakes  :D

Roller completed, front width 2 3/4", rears 3.0". She passes the drivetrain test sweet. With the "click" of the power supply the axle rotates instantly. At low power you can see and hear the slight imperfection of the 55 year old Cox crown. I wouldn't want it any other way. It's not wobbly and at about 5 volts the howl of the motor drowns it out anyway. I give it a "thumbs up"  :good:

When this thing hits the track for a test, if you don't feel like a 1966 Pro slot car racer, check your heartbeat  :)

Inserts are .498 OD and the fronts were a perfect fit without shaving. Glued with clear windshield sealant/adhesive. (rears are coming but they need turning down to .450)

IMG_0261.JPG

Ran out of custom sanding gizmos so I made a new batch. 400 grit wet/dry contact cemented to paint stir sticks with the ends squared. I don't like fingernail emery boards for fine work because of the rounded edges and they are not flat.

Mine aren't pretty but they work better - just my preference. As the sandpaper at the ends wears out, I just keep trimming them down until there is nothing left to hold  :)
