Doesn't say anything about being allowed to narrow tires mid-race or change to narrowed tires. Only about being allowed to change a damaged or stripped tire with approval. Of course when moving from one main to the next the tires could then be changed out for narrowed tires if so desired.

There is not, nor has there ever been, any rule that prevents narrowing tires during a lane change. I have done it myself.

Never did I say you could change to a narrowed tire.

I specifically said I had narrowed a tire that was on my car.

I talked openingly about it post race.

If it was an issue, don't you think Noose would have said something?

Sorry, Mike. I must have misread your post. I was responding to John Luongo's post about narrowing the tires between heats. Of course, starting the race like that is always allowed.

I did mean between heats, during the race.

 

You can narrow the rear tires as many times as you want during the race.

I snip them on the inside with a pair of curved body scissors.

I have no idea why you would think you can't.

The racer is not changing the ground clearance or the rear track.

The rules we have always followed here at the Retro East races is that the only thing you can do to the rear tires once the race starts and on the lane change is to clean them with the supplied lighter fluid.

Can you retighten your set screws or do you have let your tires fall off? LOL.

 

My second place Sano 11 rear tire with it's 10 second between heat, legal traction tune.

 

 

I bet the subject of narrowing the tires, between heats, was never discussed at one of your Retro East races.

I am just stating what is allowed by the rules and by what has been done for the last 19 years. Racers will do things to make their cars better and those things may or may not be allowed. That is just racing.

Am I the only racer who would narrow his tires during a heat break using an X-Acto knife while spinning them up on a power supply? Yes, I know it sounds dangerous, but it really isn't and works quite well.

Yes, while spinning the tires on a power supply, and using an X-Acto is neater, using scissors is quicker and safer. I snip it and then I rotate the rear end approximately 180 degrees and snip it again to try to maintain reasonable balance.
From the results below, you can see I 'won' the second half of the race. Granted, Willy had a big lead and was probably on cruise, but more important, I did it on green and again on blue, and moved from fourth to second.
 
The technique was something I came up from my wing car days, helping guys out in qualifying, when they were hopelessly bogged and popping in the glue or stuttering around the donut. I came up with scissors for speed after realizing cars with chunked tires usually ran adequately in the race.

Noose made it abundantly clear that the only thing you could do to your rear tires during a race was to clean the tires and they had to use the naphtha and rag that was on the tech table they couldn't use their own. You were not allowed to mod the tires narrow them take chunks out of them Short of just tightening the set screw you are not allowed to do anything if you did he would Chuck you out of the race after he yelled at you LOL rules are not that's the way Joe ran his races. That is why it is unheard of to us in retro E to be able to narrow your tires during a race

Translated... no one ever thought to do it and/or it wasn't necessary for monthly races.

 

He was obviously fine with it.

 

He took and posted the picture of my car where it was clear as day.

You could modify the tires, glue them pee on them if you wished before tech. Once the car was teched, you were done!!!
