I will put on an 8t because of new 65t 30 wire arm will need more gear than the old 27/28? wire arm.I will maybe have to shave the area where the crown hits about .015" or less.

Been a couple of days since I got on my computer but I just wanted to say what fun I had driving some of the cars at the Dynamic Challenge. Felt privileged to be asked to drive other people's cars and don't think I put any dents in 'em!
Thanks and kudos to Mr. Swiss for a really well-run and really fun time.

Maybe Jairus could post a copy of the results from each leg in at the end of the 'Cars' noreply thread for quick reference? Its good that that thread remains uncluttered.
Al.
I can do that! I posted the results in the "Tracks" thread after Chicago (and will do so for each track) so I suppose it makes sense to put it in the Cars thread too.

Bob, I hear your car is in the mail and will arrive at Buena Park in time for the second race. Way to go Marvin!
Marvin will make the show with a hot new DC-706 and a he was on strict diet
Thank you to all that helped get me back in the game and to everyone that pushes Marvin around in future races

Ack...Jairus is right, brush springs pressure will affect braking as well as RPMs...as will timing advance. The list is endless and not only do all of the above affect braking...but also heat, torque, RPMs current draw. The whole mess is like a gordian knot
Continuing on from the BPR thread discussion on brakes and the cars....
Gearing a car for brakes is a difficult balancing act isn't it. Mike suggested that my car lacks a bit of top end speed and could benefit from a more powerful motor or a gear swap, whereas Dennis has said my car has no brakes whatsoever...
Now. a gear swap to improve top speed would mean a lower gear ratio and less teeth on the crown. I'm currently running 32t crown and 8t pinion as they were at hand, and 4:1 had been recommended for the last proxy. However, my understanding is that a lower gear ratio would also mean even less brakes. Am I correct?
So in that case I guess a solution lies in the motor itself. I'm thinking that a more powerful motor has better brakes. I must admit that when I turned my motor by hand I didn't feel that torquey resistance that you get with some motors, and I imagine this equates to brakes. The magnets in the can are the ones that came with the Mid-America Mabuchi motor kit and seemed a little tame. I had told J that I thought my motor might be a little underpowered, so I've been surprised by its performace so far. Just a shame about the lack of brakes.
I'm hoping to build a spare motor, just in case this one smokes. I'll see if I can get better magnets for it. hehehe

PS. If I'm confused here please let me know...Velocity Ratios and Mechanical Advantage were never my strong point at school.
PPS. Timing Advance??? Would this be down to how far round the comm is turned relative to the windings, and their positioning to the magnets?

Yes, unfortunately, gearing for more top end would mean slower acceleration and less brakes. In the case where the gearing was already optimal, it might cause the car to lug also meaning more heat.
So in that case I guess a solution lies in the motor itself. I'm thinking that a more powerful motor has better brakes. I must admit that when I turned my motor by hand I didn't feel that torquey resistance that you get with some motors, and I imagine this equates to brakes.
Not necessarily. It's easily possible that a motor that doesn't feel "click-y" when turning it by hand may have strong magnets and good brakes. It depends on the type of magnet material and the magnet shape.
The magnets in the can are the ones that came with the Mid-America Mabuchi motor kit and seemed a little tame. I had told J that I thought my motor might be a little underpowered, so I've been surprised by its performace so far. Just a shame about the lack of brakes.
The stuff I've gotten from Mid America (quite a lot!) has always been top shelf and in great shape. The problem here is sometimes one of perception, because people have gotten used to relatively high-performance modern motors. There's a very good reason why people immediately tore apart brand new motors back in the 60's, and it wasn't just because it was fun. The motors were anemic in acceleration, top speed and braking and something HAD to be done. Magnet upgrades were some of the most common/popular ones back then, but it's also true that a car with a lot of mass will tend to "coast" more than a lighter one. So there's a balance between handling and braking that's even more important with a less powerful motor.
PPS. Timing Advance??? Would this be down to how far round the comm is turned relative to the windings, and their positioning to the magnets?
Yes, more advance "may" mean more RPMs, more heat and possibly less brakes. Generally, a neutral timed motor will last longer, run cooler and have good brakes.

John, I wasn't meaning to imply that there was anything wrong with the magnets from Mid America, but just that in comparison to some modern Deathstar magnets I have, they were a little lacking. I was thinking of put the modern magnets in the can (like you said became the norm), but I couldn't seem to get them to fit for some reason. So gave up.
BTW, I'm quite happy with how the motor is working, I was just enquiring as to why it might have no brakes. I certainly don't want to jinx it by fiddling with it. hehehe.
My petg arrived today, so I'm looking forward to seeing the car again and I will set to right away to pull a new body and get it painted up ready for its arrival, then mailing onto Oz.
Barny, It was Mike S that said the car lacked top end and needed more motor or different gearing, and Dennis S that said it had no brakes.

I will send it separately to Steve King Barn. It's already cut and trimmed, he can mount it super easy!
