I'm not that familiar with this particular slot car but I would like to know. Was it only available with the un-prototypical numeral font and was it ever offered with the red door numbers that's shown on the box? If I can find a chassis and motor to go with the body kit and interior I'd like to build a repro to go with the box I'm creating.
Thanks

Do you remember about when you got it Mike?
It seems to have been announced in late 66 or early 67, but there were production problems and it probably came out in mid-67, maybe a bit earlier, based on what I can glean from the magazine ads & articles.
Even in our remote corner of Chicago, we were mostly running scratchbuilds by then.... and even tho I was not in the vanguard, I remember thinking when Cox came out with the 2E and Ford stocker that they were a bit behind the times...
Don
I was about 12 or 13, so 67 or 68.
I can still remember going to test it on Charlie's back track, and the guy next to me was running a red polypropylene, Corvette, toy car body, on a Cox 36D sidewinder chassis.
It was about 1/16th scale, taking up 3 lanes. lol

was there ever a repro made of this chassis in quantity?

It looks like the frenzy for the high end collectible slot cars has settled down. Sure, there's still a lot of junk to be had, that's all the hoarder's are going to list. They have their priceless trophy's under their bed that will eventually sell at garage sales for pennies on the dollar. Too bad the guys selling now have missed the boat, at least for a killing.
My suggestion, hold on to that mint, in the box Cox Gurney stock car or Chaparral 2E. If you list it on ebay and only get $1200 or less, when you hoped for 5 Grand, it'll kill you!
By the way to all that contributed here, nice builds on the Gurney's.

was there ever a repro made of this chassis in quantity?
Mostly individuals who have made their own copy. About 5 years ago, a guy in Canada did a series of these, chassis and body, and they were going for good prices (started at about $200, then went higher...). He supplied the repro body for my own version, since I already had a Cox chassis.
Don't remember his ebay ID offhand, but he's still selling various slot stuff from time to time, and I imagine he still has the jigs... (rmm... something I think).

"The sealed kit on Ebay barely went $1600. Probably disapointing for the seller and certainly way down from the hayday of vintage collecting."
Matt, I think that the price paid is actually well above actual value! The box and tray were trash, there is mildew under the box, the decals are suspect... the only real value there was that of the parts, and the guy got probably 500 bucks more than it is worth.
The value of such an item is in its condition, and a pristine boxed kit of the Cox Galaxie is worth 3-time what that poor example sold for.
No pristine kit has shown on eBay or other auctions for many YEARS now, and if one DID show up in exceptional condition, expect that the old $3500.00 value would be blown away.

I think this seller (unknown to me) must have bought a collection from somebody or decided it was time to sell out. When he listed the Dirt Trackers a couple weeks ago, he listed about 5-6 cars at once. Same with the built up Gurneys, he listed several at the same time. So I would think he is selling all he has. Just my thoughts.
I do know P has a better understanding of current prices, but he does believe in buy low sell high! Don't we all?

There were just too many listed in too short a sequence. After waiting a few days, this one is doing a bit better than the last two, it's also a bit more original too though.
I bought a body from a guy in Austria (for waaayyy too much money) and am wondering if I should restore it or leave it alone. It's nice except for the massively overglued bumpers and unoriginal (but cleanly installed) windows. What do you guys think? And anyone know where can I get a good copy (or original) of those hokey original decals?

This kit: http://www.ebay.com/...vQAAOSwaA5WiG9t is one of two dozens I put together from NOS parts in the 1990s when I still owned Electric Dreams.
I don't know if it is worth the asked price, but I guarantee that all the parts are real and correct, except the decals which were reproduced in the UK at the time.
Interestingly the outer box is a genuine, un-printed Classic item, as I got a few hundreds at the time from the Classic people in Culver City! They were previously used to store parts for kits and RTR assembly in the late 1960s, and there were about 8 cartons of 50 boxes, one partially open... those were the 1990s!
This one, http://www.ebay.com/...2oAAOSwL7VWhuKu is a bit dusty but real, except for all 4 tires and the rear wheels. I think that it would restore nicely...
