I was interested in this proxy race until PDL stuck his nose in it. Jairus was using the KISS routine, 2 hole Mura can and chop off buss bars. Pretty simple. Any arm, as its a run what ya brung theme, like in the day. Now, Too much info and too many interference suggestions.....................

What's cool about all this is what Rick calls the "KISS" philosophy Jairus is holding to. By allowing cans/endbells up to the Mura Green can (including Mabuchi FT16D, Mura A, B, C with or without the can notch) with any arm and any single ceramic mag (no segmented mags, no cobalt or neo mags), he's pretty much guaranteed that motors will be relatively easy to source. ***People need to pay more attention to the chassis guidelines Jairus has posted. Instead of getting so hung up on sharpening the rules to a razor's edge, everyone needs to hold to the stated rules (which are already numerous enough for people to easily get the idea)...as well as the "intent" here. Clearly, that is to run cars that are both close to the ideal of the Thingies as run...BUT with some minor allowances to make sourcing and building easier. Even with the old motors, bodies and chassis, these cars should be very fast...and a handful to drive. A test for both the builders AND the racers! Just keeping these cars together (with NO "servicing") for two races should be a job and there will no doubt be some smoke and torn up gears as people puch the envelope.

Just thinking about this some more, and how it shouldn't be a huge problem to source motors. I "think" a Mura "A" can setup should be doable with modern D-motor magnets and a suitable arm (depending on the thickness of the magnets). With the right arm, this should make for a pretty potent motor. You could even use an older FT16D can...a Mura endbell and then the same modern D-motor magnets and arm. If I'm in error, I'm sure someone will chime-in and tell me so ( :) ). Anyway, a Mabuchi FT16D can is probably significantly lighter than a Mura can, so people shouldn't automatically disregard the possibilities here. Even within the rule set, there are many ways to skin a cat (ie: build a strong motor that meets Jairus' rules).

The "modern" D can mags would make for a "huge" air gap in a older "A/D" can ;) Not much brakes or punch and possibly a lot of heat.

Hey would "B" magnets be legal in a "C" can?

See Rule #16 Ron.

You know, all this talk about motor cans got me thinking. While Philippe is correct when he says no modern Parma end-bells on vintage motors please. Here is a fully legal option. It's a vintage Mabuchi can with a Mura "B" end-bell. fits tight side to side but rotates because the "B" is lower. This means that shim stock will need to be slipped into the top and bottom to help center the end-bell. But provides the best of both worlds: Light weight can (thanks John) and the best brush hardware possible.

Well, they look like them... from this distance. Color doesn't really matter since white was standard then, just don't want to see Parma or JK or Star logos on any entry please. So... dye those pink gears black and spend a little time searching out the correct bits you can find. Else... please ASK!

Hi Pablo...I just did (again) and I'm not sure where you're going??? If you're talking about the "any arm" thing vis-a-vis my comment about modern D motor magnets in a Mura A can, my question wasn't about whether they would "work" or be legal in themselves, only whether such a cobbled-together thing would be legal. Now I see that it should be fine and of course, the arm would have to be a big diameter arm. I think Jairus has easily covered all the bases with the rules.

I'm just showing you the answer to your question about whether a "fat" arm would be illegal.
Post # 50 says "any arm". Simple.

This is what Bob Kean used to build his jet motors that Chris Vitucci and Bob Emott used to run. He also used the Cox NASCAR can with the white Mura endbells, and eventually with the 36D brushes... not sure which is easier to find, the Cox or the oval-hole Mabuchi.
A good and inexpensive combination. But the Mura "C" cans are probably the best choice because they are relatively easy to find now that the one with the notch is permitted, and are smaller, lighter and allow the magnets to fit with no shims, making things quite simple to put together. The more difficult would be to find the EARLY C-can endbells (with the smaller bushing) unless Jairus will allow the later ones with the larger bushing, that are much easier to find I think.

I never said they were not allowed, you did Philippe.
What I said was "no buss bars", because that is the most outward and obvious indication of a later motor. The endbell with the larger bearing effects the performance not one wit! They're easier to find so... I would have to say it should be legal.
Sure, I'd LOVE to have everyone find a mint "B" can endbell and cut it down to match my "vision". But that's just crazy and I'm not going to nit pick the rules to death on this one because... I am busy building a chassis.

The rules stand as written.
