Okay, here is a preliminary list of possible participants based on comments from the "Thingies: What were they all about" thread.
..(long list follows without my name)...If anyone wants in, I'll add your name.

Me. I want in. I'm running all vintage and I have the rust to prove it. Just waiting on O2R to pop my bodies and send me a bill so I can put them together and do some testing. Here's what they look like so far:

Posted Image

I presume they're both U-Go frames. Can anyone confirm?

Both motors are B cans. The pink one has an untagged arm and the purple one has a grp-7 arm. The winds look identical on both. I didn't measure them, but they look about 26g. You can get an idea of the size of the wire under the tag.

Posted Image

I'm counting on the bodies having enough down force to make extra weight unnecessary. The only glue track around (about 35mi away) is a smooth and fast king. Will that be indicative of the two tracks we'll be running on? I'll pick my final entrant after testing.

The only things not vintage are the lead wires on the purple motor. All my racing lately has been hardbody sedans powered by strombecker devastator motors. This should be quite a leap.

Regards,

Steve C

What about the drilling/weight reduction of rims and gears?

17.) Anything that even LOOKS like a modern wing car body or chassis will not be allowed.

Jairus's body this year starts at the front low so it looks right.... this one.....Look at the front end height and you can see it was based off a modern wing body as it's high in the front and then swoops down and back up...... screams wing car. IMO it looks Goofy.....

Wow Steve that arm looks like what we used to call.... 10t of coat hanger! :D If you run that you better send a choke with it! :bomb: :good:

BTW a fully charged lead acid battery has 2.2v per cell or 13.2v per industry standards.

I am with Al on this one. That body shape is really close to a Choti once some details are added. (panel lines and cockpit, exhaust pipe details) As it is, it looks like just another "door stop" wing car. Heck, I don't even like Ray's "Deep Dish" body (see below) because that one appears to my eye to be approaching the boring detail side of the equation. But... it still has a couple styling ques of Body #5.

I won't be using it because I like #15 and just wish it were 3" wide instead of the flexi width.

Incidentally, got one chassis done. No pics yet, still trimming and then a little clean up.
Pictures soon.

John, John, Edo,

It must be my eyes... But I can't see how the lines of that mould are so different from those of Jairus' car (disregarding details). Other than the forward hump that is.

Honestly Al, there are already some allowed bodies that I think miss the mark. So (keeping in mind that everything's fine with me and I wouldn't disallow anything :) ), I would have preferred even less choices in the body department. Then again, I don't remember any of these bodies from when I was a kid. The thingie fad may have hit after I discovered girls and wasn't paying attention :)

Nice one John.

J,

Rule 13 states: No parts or bits or technology manufactured after December 31, 1970, allowed. Only exceptions being consumables such as pick-up braids, motor brushes, and tire rubber, which mean: vintage wheels only. (If you need help finding wheels, ask someone.)

Does that mean that repro parts (wheels in particular) are not allowed? Or is that a stupid question???

Repro wheels are fine if they replicate what once was. Example: Electric Dreams Russkit repops.
You can even use 1/32 wheels if small dia. is your goal. But they should be vintage or replicate vintage. In other words... no plastic JK rims this time.

Plenty of guys out there that can glue and true for you and literally millions of vintage aluminum wheels are in junk boxes produced by Russkit, Riggen, Twinn-K, U-Go, Dynamic etc, etc, etc to pick from. If you don't have any, ask in this thread and someone should be able to help you.

Sorry Steve, didn't forget your post.
Look like either U-Go frames or Champion and you have a GREAT start! I would pick the best parts of the two and make sure it's flat and true on the jig before testing.

Oscar asked me in a PM if we were only allowed Jet Flag guides since that's the primary one we're talking about. The answer is NO, you can use any guide you want to as long as it was available in the summer of 1970! The Jet Flag is simply the best and easiest to find. Cox would be my second choice but they are getting expensive and hard to find.

Okay, got my next chassis nearly ready to assemble. The front axle is not set at the correct ride height yet. Have to mock up the chassis with a guide and wheels to do that.

Why, you want me to ban them? They are a fairly recently invention I think. But guys were using tubing and wire loops for years so try that.

Well, I am a little disappointed. Got the stance and clearances set and ready for assembly. But the weight is not quite on target. Was shooting for 80g and as it sits with pins, arm, lead wires, body and such it's 83g. The mule was 95g for those wondering. Paint and gears will add even more...

And before someone asks about my using threaded axles. I might consider it just for the hell of it. Haha! (With thread locker of course.

For the record, I did not call Tony P a punk, and I did not make that statement. Somehow it got inserted into my post.

The only thing I asked was what year earring keepers started being used, and I only ask so I don't have to re-do my chassis bits if it is not legal. Thanks for the answer :)

It was my mistake when I first answered. Sorry.
I'm still having problems since the last board update.

We called him that because he was into punk rock and wore an ear ring when it wasn't very common.

When I'm on the wrong computer using the wrong browser, crazy things happen.

BTW, I guess guys can't use 18 gauge silicone jacketed lead wire.

It must be my eyes... But I can't see how the lines of that mould are so different from those of Jairus' car (disregarding details). Other than the forward hump that is. I'm assuming that when the plastic is shaped there would be less of a step at the front, as the height of the mould is there to facilitate a clear pull. And of course you can shape the rear wheel cut outs as you wish.

Stick a cockpit on it, some exhausts and a bulge to allow for the guide and the result would not be so far removed from J's car. Would it not?

If that doorstop is so much like bodies that are already approved, then why use it? Use the approved/acceptable ones

As others have said, it doesn't have the details and finesse of the Choti bods, and doesn't fit the intent of the event.

You should really get new glasses as that body IS NOT a Parma W-66 :)

I would know as I designed and raced the W-66 body back in it's day.

Errrr ummmm because the rules state this.....

However, a few body makers have requested the right to make their own. As long as the bodies are in the spirit of the era, they will be allowed to compete

So "nothing" is actually "approved" with a rule like above. It's quite subjective to the ones who may be wanting to make bodies.

Yep, fair enough.
OK, not "approved" then, how about "acceptable" and in the spirit of the event.
