The Raceway 81 track is fast by our UK standards, Ben, and an 8 tooth pinion is what we use on Retro cars there.
I am, however, strongly recommending the use of 7 tooth pinions although there is no spec gear ratio for the series. The majority of the tracks will be suited to shorter gearing and having a car short of breath at one or two rounds seems a better option to me than stressing the motor in its mid-range on all the other tracks. There will also be a trip down a drag strip at one round, either at REM Raceway or at a St Louis track, and an 8 tooth pinion will definitely hurt your acceleration.

Pablo and Jairus have the right handle on the bracket question. Big thanks to Pablo for his offer of help there.

The first round of the series will be held at North London on Wednesday, 3rd of April during one of our regular club nights. That's your deadline, thank you gentlemen.

Edo has agreed to judge a beauty contest of the cars through photos which will supply the points for one of the 13 rounds. The option exists for him to hold an actual race on his Lugano track exists but that will depend on the commitments he has at the time.

Andy Brown-Searle posted a photo of his nearly finished entry on Facebook a few days ago and I'm copying it here for all the Facebook refuseniks. Body is a Truescale Mach 1 although Andy has other options to try as well.

Ben, I found my hole drilling "pattern" for FK motors.

DSC06106.JPG

It's the can end of a Falcon.  What I will do is, tack solder the "pattern" on your bracket.

Then drill the two holes, left and right. Ream out a little with a very small rat tail file, and you are good to go. Picture is for illustration purposes only, it's a junk bracket :)

DSC06110.JPG

I know you build good chassis, you could probably do this yourself.

Or just send it to Mississippi, I ain't scared. If I ruin it, I'll have to build you a new chassis :laugh2:

Here is my chassis, minus running gear. Has already been track tested twice, slides well. 99% sure body will be Shinoda Arrow. That will be painted in a couple of weeks.

Andy, your car looks outstanding :good:

Low, I would have missed it....thanks for the Refusenikers forward/repost.

Is it a .... Pick-it, n'Stick-with-it'... gear rule?

Yes, once the series has started, Bob.
Happy to test and report findings on any cars that arrive early and tweak according to owner's wishes. Also pre-race testing for any entrants without access to a track.

That's certainly a chassis, Ben. Good to hear that there will be at least one open wheel Thingie in the action.

2 screws.jpg Got my screw problem taken care of... now I'll do some more testing, & then drop it down to the 7 tooth pinion... then off to Blighty!

BTW I am testing on a 220 engleman, so the 7 tooth really is not a viable option

RockHill SC... A Chris Dadds '90s version, but is a great track to drive, to me much easier than a non-swoopy king, but at the same time more challenging.

A rare find!!

A genuine pair of 1994 unused PSE mint green 3/32 axle tires! never used... Could these be the ticket for my Lucky 13 entry??? time to break out the Zip Grip :D

These were my favorite tires back then for both Flexi & 15-b racing... As I remember these were a size I really had no use for, but since the raceway owner had special ordered some of this rubber for me, I went ahead & got it along with the rest of my order... Looks perfect for a Thingie!!!

Trinity has some new formula that is way better than zip grip.  It is #RC6683 "zip grip free" tire treatment.

You put it on in the evening and by morning it has softened the tires up to their greatest possible softness.

Then you can use the zip grip.

Try it.  I used it on a set of 45 year old Riggen grey rubber NOS tires and it worked wonders!!!!

Barney Poyner learned a hard lesson about SBR rubber in the Dynamic Challenge, Ben, but only the tire dimensions are specified in the rules.
I have to say that I don't think that a nine tooth pinion is going to be your friend in this either.

I'm very happy to see Jairus and Maximo's car unveiled already. Work on my own is progressing slowly.

Ben, I am finding that the ZIP GRIP FREE seems to keep my tires soft for up to two weeks at a time.  It seems to work better on Natural rubber than it does for SBR. Or should I say... SBR requires more frequent applications of the treatment to remain soft.

It even softens old rubber. I put some of it on a set of old grey Riggen's and after a few applications they felt as good as they did when they were new!

To mail your car to me, Pablo? I'll PM you my address again.

Ray: by 'angled motor brackets' I'm guessing you mean brackets for a hypoid gear mesh where the axis of the motor armature shaft is lower than that of the rear axle? (Cars must be inline only.) I think either Pablo or Mike Zimmerman worked out that it was possible to get the required .062" rear ground clearance with a small amount of motor/axle offset so yes, they can be used to make legal cars.

Please be aware though that the .062" Lucky 13 rear clearance is higher than the .050" 'Retro standard' rear clearance and most Retro motor brackets will be designed to achieve the lower level of clearance with the same .800" x .820" diameter rear tires that we will be using.

I hope I haven't made that sound too complex.

Went to the track last night and ran "Road Warrior" for about 10 hot laps with no deslots at all. Didn't note the times but it really hugs those tight corners and never tipped. Seems more stable than any of my Flexi cars.

On the other hand the rear end slides just a slight bit out running on a set of JK natural rubber running in the white lane. (White and Red were both pretty slick as guys practicing tend to avoid these lanes.)

I am thinking about popping on the JK Treated tires for another test just for fun as I think it might tip then since the treated are slightly more sticky.

On the other hand.... these cars will be running on lots of different track surfaces including clean. So... it's a crap shoot I suppose.

Then I handed the car over to one of the other racers there last night. Steve is his name, and he pounded out about 10 more. He didn't say much other than "That's really quiet" and "Niiiiiiccccceeee".  But he also mentioned that pretty much anybody could pick up the controller and drive it.

And THAT is the sign of a good proxy car!

Also, I believe I finally found the chassis I'm building as my next SCRRA Can Am!  :)

Jairus, Glad to hear that the "Road Warrior" was running well.My experience with "Treated" tires is that they are "Harder"......
To touch/feel and a durometer. I move up to treated tires when a car is too "Stuck"

Well, seems I have been WRONG about treated tires. So... suppose I'll true up another set of natural rubber wheels as back up instead of the treated items.

Live and learn...

If the test track/lane was dusty run a bunch of laps with a different car to clean up the lane before making your race day tire choice.
